Digital Media Knicks Story Alex Sconziano Digital Media Knicks Story Notes for before starting: ● The Knicks have a young roster ● Knicks have shown a pattern of not keeping the same players season after season ● Players in more for the contract, not for the team’s success? ● Majority of players were not on the team in November of last year (Only Frank and Trier) ● What players are going to be in for the long haul, for when the team takes off ● Morris team veteran even at age 30 ● Players, wanting to play for themselves instead of for the team because they don’t know how much longer they’ll be there ● Look for sources and similar journalists making the same point about what’s wrong with the Knicks ● Then pick the 5 big reasons why they are bad and what they can do to improve -Morris- Potential Leader -Why Fizdale's job is in jeopardy -Idea Starting Lineup... is there one? Why the season is off to such a rough start Why nobody wants to play for the Knicks One Knicks source expects Fizdale to be fired soon The 5 general reasons why the Knicks are bad 1. Lack of talent at the guard position 2. Nobody wants to play in New York (KD and Kyrie example and Julius Randle being their free agency pickup with all their cap space.) 3. Coaching-Fizdale gone (did nothing but hurt the team) 4. Lacking a smooth offense with PASSING, not forcing shots, and thinking on the floor to limit turnovers 5. They need to play hard all game and not give up in the fourth (Also make the point that the fans are not happy) New players, teammates not in it for the long run? / Still have the young players, develop them instead. The Knicks haven’t had a winning record since 2012, when they were led by Carmelo Anthony to a First Round playoff series win over the Boston Celtics before ultimately losing in the Conference Semifinals to the Indiana Pacers. This season the Knicks hold a losing record of 7-21. Knicks fans are once again disappointed as they must suffer through another nightmare season with no hope of their team having a winning record much less returning to the playoffs after a 7 year drought. What is even more frustrating is that the Knicks ownership and front office seem to have no plan in place to return a once premier NBA team to any measure of relevance. Here’s a look at several reasons for the Knick’s continued failures. Their Lack Of Talent At The Point Guard Position In basketball, an effective point guard is considered a “floor general” and acts as an extension of the head coach while on the court. They must also be good shooters, ball handlers, and passers who create scoring opportunities for their teammates. Unfortunately the Knicks do not have any players who consistently demonstrate these skills. The Knicks’ two main Point Guards are Frank Ntilikina and Dennis Smith Jr. Ntilikina is more of an intangibles player, he might not fill up the stat sheet but he can move the ball on offense and has a very good feel of the game. Dennis Smith Jr is highly athletic who displays brief flashes of offensive brilliance. The problem is that neither of them play with any level of consistency. Ntilikina is averaging only 6.5 points, 2 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game while Smith Jr, is contributing 5.9 points, 1.6 boards, and 2.9 assists. These stats are among the lowest in the NBA for point guards. The first step to the Knicks getting better is finding a reliable and consistent point guard to compete against the league’s best floor generals. Good players do not want to play for the Knicks This offseason Knicks fans were especially excited by the possibility of securing one of the several big name free agents who were on the market and who were being courted by many interested teams. The Knicks had more available salary cap space than any other team and had the funds to sign two high level free agents. The Knicks targeted Kevin Durant - arguably the NBA’s best all around player - and Kyrie Irving - arguably the NBA’s best point guard. Two of the league's biggest superstars are exactly what the Knicks needed to get back on track. But the Knicks suffered a devastating loss when both Irving and Durant unexpectedly signed with crosstown rival Brooklyn Nets. In just one day the futures of the NBA’s two New York teams were on completely different paths. The Knicks inability to sign any big name free agents was clear evidence that no one wanted to play for the team in the league’s biggest market. No high level player wanted to play for such a dysfunctional team. The only options left to improve the team would be to build through the draft and to develop young but inexperienced players. Failing to Play hard all game Time and time again the Knicks have shown an inability to play 4 complete quarters of competitive basketball. They have played great for two quarters only to come out of halftime flat and end up getting blown out. On the rare occasions where they have been able to string together 3 good quarters of basketball they somehow find new ways to blow even sizable leads in the 4th quarter. Even the good games the Knicks have played have been taken away from them because of their lack of strong performance at the end of the game. The Knicks are averaging a 4th quarter scoring margin of minus 2.8 points, which is last in the league! The lack of effort all game is costing the team wins. They are averaging only 24 points in the fourth quarter which is second to last in the league. It's not that the players are getting tired it's simply the lack of consistent effort and concentration from the beginning to the end of a game. If the players started playing inspired basketball for an entire game they could obviously win more. Coach Fizdale Fired In recent years the Knicks have shown an inability to hire an effective head coach and have hired and fired several head coaches in their never ending search for a consistent leader. The latest head coach to be fired was David Fizdale who at the time of his hiring was touted as a smart coach who players loved to play for and who could assist in attracting the league’s best free agents. After the Knicks failed to sign Irving or Durant Coach Fizdale was left with an under talented and poorly constructed roster of players. At the beginning of the 2019 season the Knicks players appeared to be listening to Coach Fizdale and were competitive in several games even though they were losing games. Unfortunately as the season continued and the losses piled up the players eventually stopped playing for their Coach. Fizdale also failed to develop the Knicks top draft picks for the past two years - Frank Ntilikina and Kevin Knox - as the talent development of both players appears to have stalled. Under Fizdale the Knicks also repeatedly failed to close out games despite having large leads in the third and fourth quarters. Ultimately the Knicks were forced to fire Fizdale after only 22 games with just 4 wins and 18 losses. Lacking a smooth offense Under Fizdale the Knicks utilized an isolation offense despite the team not having a premier one-on-one player like a James Harden type who could single handedly breakdown a defense. This offense caused the Knicks to not pass the ball effectively and force bad shots. The Knicks have the lowest shot percentage in the NBA, making just 42.4% of their shots. Also, the absence of a pure point guard/ball handler caused an unacceptable number of turnovers. The Knicks average 14.6 turnovers per game. Fizdale also preferred to put all of his big men on the floor at one time and not balance the offense with the team’s better shooters. All of this caused the Knicks to be unable to consistently score and remain in games. After Fizdale was fired his assistant coach Mike Miller took over the head coaching job. Since Miller’s promotion the team appears to be playing more inspired basketball as shown by several wins during a recent west coast road trip. If Miller has any hope of improving the team he needs to establish an offensive identity for the Knicks and stick with it. Most importantly, he needs to put his players in positions where they can be successful. Particularly his young and developing players.

  • New Coach + Quick Learners = Fast Start First-Year Coach Luke Flockerzi Introduces a New Offensive System As Men’S Basketball Gets Off to a Quick Start
sPoRts mEn’s BaskEtBall New Coach + Quick Learners = Fast Start First-year coach luke Flockerzi introduces a new offensive system as men’s basketball gets off to a quick start. By Dennis O'Donnell Where’s the center? And the power forwards, for that matter? As the Roches- ter men’s basketball team takes to the court this winter, Yellowjacket fans used to see- ing players in traditional positions will need to acquaint themselves with a new way of thinking about how to organize five athletes and a basketball. Gone is the standard system geared to- ward a point guard, off guard, small for- ward, power forward, and center. Instead, the Yellowjackets feature four perimeter positions and a low-post threat, known as the “hub.” Let first-year coach Luke Flockerzi draw it up: Most times on offense, Rochester will set four players high on the perimeter and one—the hub—low, closer to the basket. The players will analyze what the defense shows, then run the best offense to counter- act it. It’s not one-on-one basketball. It’s a mixture of seeing, thinking, and reacting— an approach that Flockerzi believes gives his players the freedom to make decisions and play basketball. “Anyone can bring the ball up the court,” Flockerzi says. “The point guard doesn’t have to initiate the offense because posi- tions are interchangeable.” Flockerzi debuted the system this win- ter as he took over the head coaching du- ties for the Yellowjackets. The former head coach at Skidmore College, Flockerzi suc- ceeds Mike Neer '88W (MS), who stepped down last spring after leading the Yellow- jackets for 34 seasons and establishing the program as one of the winningest in NCAA Division III.

  • How to Play Basketball Offense - Description of Team Positions
How to Play Basketball Offense - Description of Team Positions Over the years, as shooting, passing, and dribbling have become more sophisticated, offensive alignments have changed. They probably will continue changing in the future. Rule changes often dictate this. For example, take the three-point shot. This is changing the philosophy of a lot of coaches. Previous to the three-point shot, big men were dominating the game. Teams constantly looked for ONLY a close-in shot. As a result, most defenses packed back in tight. The three-point shot is changing all this. This new rule has opened up the game. Defenses must come out. It is quite common to see coaches using 3 and 4 guard offenses. Some of them even have their offensive teams and defensive teams, substituting freely to suit the particular need. Fundamentals, however, remain much as they were 40 years ago. Things that worked then, still work today. The terminology used to describe offensive alignments are different than they were 40 years ago. Some team offenses have evolved so that every player must be able to play at any and all positions. The flex offense is an example. Yet, this type offense is over 30 years old. Us old timers called it "the shuffle." In either offense, the center often finds himself out at a guard position. This type offense is well suited for today's rules; however, adjustments are made to fit the abilities of available players. High school coaches always have to adapt. Living the Dream Tyronn Jamar Lue struggled early. By Tom Nugent Raised by a single mom in small- town Missouri, he landed on the campus of UNL in the fall of 1995. He was barely 18, and he was totally uncertain about his future. But he also had a huge asset going for him. He’d already taught himself (with the help of a few outstanding coaches) how to shoot a basketball with unerring accuracy. After settling into his dorm room on the UNL campus, the wide-eyed youth from Mexico, Missouri, unpacked his bags and headed for the gym. What followed during the next 20 years was a classic American success story ... the story of an intensely single-minded young man who took advantage of a university scholarship and eventually became one of this country’s most accomplished professional athletes. 32 WINTER 2016 Living the Dream Lue with Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Dave Blatt, during last year’s championship series. (#407). AVANCE DE LOS NOVATOS MÁS PRODUCTIVOS DE LA NBA 2018/19 [MONOTEMA] (Actualizado 04/04/19).
