MAPPING is a contemporary art exhibition that presents a survey of creative art practices of the MAP Blue Mountains members. New works in a wide range of mediums including painting, sculpture, video, performance, sound and installation will be shown in a curated exhibition. The public program during the exhibition will include durational performances, artist talks and a public forum. Time: Braemar Gallery is open Thursday to Sunday, 10am – 4pm. Margaret Flockton was the first botanical illustrator to work at the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney. The Margaret Flockton Award honours the enormous contribution Margaret made to early Australian botanical illustration and taxonomic research and encourages outstanding contemporary illustrators to build on this fine tradition. Complex science is translated into precise and detailed imagery as artists from around the world compete for this annual Award. Time: 9.30am – 4.30pm daily. Learn to control a soft brush on rice paper, and use it to form bold yet delicate strokes that 13 Aug – 24 Sept create harmonious and elegant Chinese characters. At the end of the course, you will have 2019 meaningful works of your own to take home and the technique and appreciation to make calligraphy an everyday skill. Time: 1pm – 2.30pm. Coinciding with the 80th anniversary of the commencement of WWII, Vivienne Dadour has curated this exhibition which explores aspects of the personal, historical and political landscape of the Blue Mountains during, and post, WW2. The annual Daffodil Festival celebrates this beautiful yellow flower, which is one of the first bulbs to appear as winter eases into spring. Enjoy a picnic, take some photos or simply enjoy the mass plantings. View the many varieties of cut flowers in the Visitor Centre with cut flowers available for purchase along with Cancer Council Daffodil Day merchandise. Time: 9.30am – 4.30pm daily. Reality in flames explores the different ways in which Australian modernist artists responded creatively to the war, producing work which sought to comprehend cataclysmic events. It also provides a visual history of the period, revealing the war as a transformative force that altered Australia and the world. Nature inspires a response. My responses are expressed in these watercolour and mixed media paintings, which aim to capture the extraordinary diversity of colour and texture in natural formations. Landscapes depicting the majestic escarpments of the Blue Mountains are joined by seascapes from the beautiful South Coast of New South Wales. Time: Opening Event Sat 7 Sept, 2pm-4pm. The much-loved NSW Police Band return with a delightful concert of classics – a fabulous selection of Broadway show tunes, movie themes, orchestral and all-time favourite classics. Starring renowned vocalist Belinda Parsons and under the musical direction of esteemed conductor John Saunders. Time: 11am. Entry: $20 (includes Devonshire style morning tea).
