37 th Lunar and Planetary Science Conference THE CONFERENCE IN REVIEW Attendance at the 37th Lunar and Planetary Science Conference (LPSC) set yet another record for this conference, with 1546 participants from 24 countries attending the meeting held at the South Shore Harbour Resort and Conference Center in League City, Texas, on March 13–17, 2006 (see inset for attendance statistics). Rearrangement of the confi guration of the meeting rooms, along with additional overfl ow seating, allowed conference organizers and staff to accommodate the marked increase in attendance, thereby being able to maintain the current meeting venue and hence the low registration fee, which enables the high number of student attendees. LPSC continues to be recognized among the international science community as the most important planetary conference in the world, and this year’s meeting substantiated the merit of that reputation. More than 1400 abstracts were submitted in consideration for presentation at the conference, and hundreds of planetary scientists and students attended both oral and poster sessions focusing on such diverse topics as the Moon, Mars, Mercury, and Venus; outer planets and satellites; meteorites; comets, asteroids, and other small bodies; Limpacts; interplanetary dust particles and presolar grains; origins of planetary systems; planetary formation and early evolution; and astrobiology. Sunday night’s registration and reception were again held at the Center for Advanced Space Studies, which houses the Lunar and Planetary Institute. Featured on Sunday night was an open house for the display of education and public outreach activities and programs. Former International Space Station Commander Terry Virts helped to install the outpost’s 360-degree observation module, which not only helped him to take more photos than any astronaut before him, but also gives those who see the images a deeper understanding of our planet’s climate, economics, and place in the universe. Themes: space, exploration, science, climate, photography Biography NASA astronaut Terry Virts has served as pilot of the space shuttle Endeavour, a crew member on the Russian Soyuz spacecraft, and most recently as commander of the International Space Station during 200 consecutive days in space—one of the longest continuous space missions of any NASA astronaut. Terry appeared in the 2016 IMAX film A Beautiful Planet, a breathtaking portrait of Earth from space that features stunning footage of our magnificent blue planet and humanity's impact on it. Much of it was shot be Terry while aboard (and outside) the International Space Station. His photography, which provides incredible aerial views of Earth and the vast space that surrounds it is featured in the National Geographic book View From Above, which was released in October 2017. 3.1 Discipline Science Results
CASSINI FINAL MISSION REPORT 2019 1 SATURN Before Cassini, scientists viewed Saturn’s unique features only from Earth and from a few spacecraft flybys. During more than a decade orbiting the gas giant, Cassini studied the composition and temperature of Saturn’s upper atmosphere as the seasons changed there. Cassini also provided up-close observations of Saturn’s exotic storms and jet streams, and heard Saturn’s lightning, which cannot be detected from Earth. The Grand Finale orbits provided valuable data for understanding Saturn’s interior structure and magnetic dynamo, in addition to providing insight into material falling into the atmosphere from parts of the rings. Cassini’s Saturn science objectives were overseen by the Saturn Working Group (SWG). This group consisted of the scientists on the mission interested in studying the planet itself and phenomena which influenced it. The Saturn Atmospheric Modeling Working Group (SAMWG) was formed to specifically characterize Saturn’s uppermost atmosphere (thermosphere) and its variation with time, define the shape of Saturn’s 100 mbar and 1 bar pressure levels, and determine when the Saturn safely eclipsed Cassini from the Sun. Trilling, Bojan Vrˇsnak LSST will provide huge advances in our knowledge of millions of astronomical objects “close to home’”– the small bodies in our Solar System. Previous studies of these small bodies have led to dramatic changes in our understanding of the process of planet formation and evolution, and the relationship between our Solar System and other systems. Beyond providing asteroid targets for space missions or igniting popular interest in observing a new comet or learning about a new distant icy dwarf planet, these small bodies also serve as large populations of “test particles,” recording the dynamical history of the giant planets, revealing the nature of the Solar System impactor population over time, and illustrating the size distributions of planetesimals, which were the building blocks of planets. In this chapter, a brief introduction to the different populations of small bodies in the Solar System (§ 5.1) is followed by a summary of the number of objects of each population that LSST is expected to find (§ 5.2). Some of the Solar System science that LSST will address is presented through the rest of the chapter, starting with the insights into planetary formation and evolution gained through the small body population orbital distributions (§ 5.3). The effects of collisional evolution in the Main Belt and Kuiper Belt are discussed in the next two sections, along with the implications for the determination of the size distribution in the Main Belt (§ 5.4) and possibilities for identifying wide binaries and understanding the environment in the early outer Solar System in § 5.5. -

DIY Solar System Walk When exploring the solar system, we have to start with 2 main ideas--- the planets and the incredible space between them. What is a planet? We have 8 planets in our solar system—Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. To be a planet, an object has to meet all 3 of the points below: 1. Be round 2. Orbit the sun 3. Be the biggest object in your orbit. The Earth is a planet. The moon is not a planet because it orbits the Earth not the sun. Pluto is not a planet because it fails #3. On its trip around the sun, it crosses paths with the planet Neptune. The two won’t hit, but Neptune is much bigger than Pluto. Distances in the Solar System Everything in the solar system is very far apart. The Earth is 93 million miles from the Sun. If you traveled 65 miles per hour, it would take 59, 615 days to get there. Instead of using miles, astronomers measure distances in Astronomical Units (AU). 1 AU = 93 million miles, the distance between the Earth and the Sun. It’s really hard to imagine how far apart things are in space. To help understand these distances, we can make a scale model. In our solar system model, you are going to measure distances using your own steps. Directions: Start at your picture of the sun. For each planet, count your steps following the chart.
