John Hughes, a successful businessman hailing from Georgia, was introduced to the public as the new owner and president of the Binghamton Mets in a press conference held in the team’s clubhouse. After years of dogged rumors of the city losing professional baseball, Hughes used his introduction to Binghamton to unequivocally solidify his goals for the organization. “The B-Mets are here to stay,” said Hughes.“Not only for today and not only for the 2016 season, but we’re here for the future. There is a long -term commitment in place.” Michael Urda, the team’s former president and leader of the previous ownership group, helped hand control to Hughes following two decades of heading the organization. “You remind me of myself in 1994,” Urda said to the B-Mets’ new TEAM HISTORY owner. “Your heart’s in the right place, and you want to own this team for the right reasons...I’m pleased to share the keys with some- New owner, John Hughes body that shares our same values.” Rich David, Mayor of the City of Binghamton, accurately summed up the collective thoughts of his constitu- ents whose beloved baseball team was staying put. “Today is a day of celebration.
