Zoological Studies 46(4): 454-472. Arete borradailei Coutière, 1903 and Athanas verrucosus Banner and Banner, 1960 are transferred to Rugathanas gen. nov., based on several unique features on the chelipeds, 3rd pereiopods, antennules, and mouthparts. The estab- lishment of Rugathanas enables the redefinition of Athanas Leach, 1814 and Arete Stimpson, 1860, and a for- mal revalidation of Arete, formerly a synonym of Athanas. Two important features, the number of pereiopodal epipods and the number of carpal segments of the 2nd pereiopod, are variable within Rugathanas gen. nov., but may be used to distinguish Athanas from Arete. Progress in our understanding of phylogenetic relationships within the Crustacea is linked to continuing discoveries of new taxa, to advances in theory and to improvements in methodology. Six themes are discussed that serve to illustrate some of the major on-going controversies and unresolved problems in the field as well as to illustrate changes that have taken place since the time of Linnaeus. These themes are: 1. the treatment of parasitic Crustacea, 2. the affinities of the Remipedia, 3. the validity of the Entomostraca, 4. exopodites and epipodites, 5. using larval characters in estimating phylogenetic rela- tionships, and 6. fossils and the crustacean stem-lineage. It is concluded that the development of the stem lineage concept for the Crustacea has been dominated by consideration of taxa known only from larval or immature stages. -

DE GRAVE* Abstract A report is presented on a small collection of caridean shrimp (Crustacea: Decapoda) from coastal waters of the United Arab Emirates in the Persian Gulf. Eight species are new records for the area, raising the total number of carideans known from the Persian Gulf to 46. A review is presented of all previous records, which highlights the relative paucity of records. ALTHOUGH the Galatheidea are conspicuous members of the Anomura and occur commonly both on the shore and in deeper water, no account has yet been given of the different methods of feeding which are found within the group. While working at the Marine Biological Laboratory at Plymouth some time ago I became interested, as previous workers have been, in the curiously modified third maxillipeds of Porcellana longicornis, and decided to examine the mode of feeding in this and related forms. My best thanks are due to Dr. E. J. Allen, F.R.S., of the Marine -Biological Association, and to Professor J. H. Dalyell (1853) describes Porcellana longicornis as the " fanning or ventilating crab," and mentions the alternating see-sawing action of the third maxillipeds fringed with long hairs ; he associates the movements however with respiration. Gosse (1854) points out the use of the maxilli peds in feeding, comparing them with the legs of a barnacle. -

ÉPICARIDES ET RHIZOCÉPHALES DE ROSCOFF. par Roland Bourdon. Station Biologique de Roscoff. Bien que les Epicarides et les Rhizocéphales de Roscoff aient fait l'objet de diverses recherches, notamment de la part de Ch. Pérez (1), aucun inventaire des espèces n’en avait encore été dressé. Les formes signalées par les différents auteurs étaient d’ailleurs assez peu nom breuses puisqu’elles ne dépa-ssaient pas la vingtaine. Les prospections qu’il nous a été donné d’effectuer, tant à la côte qu’en dragage, depuis septembre 1960, nous ont montré que la région de Roscoff est, en fait, beaucoup plus riche en parasites, leur nombre s’élevant, en effet, à 52 espèces parasitant 48 hôtes différents. De même que nous l’avons fait dans une note précédente (Bour don, 1960), nous accompagnerons la présente liste d’une statistique d’infestation pour chaque espèce et, éventuellement, de quelques remarques d’ordre morphologique ou éthologique, réservant à plus tard la publication d’un travail systématique et biologique d’ensemble sur la faune des Epicarides des côtes de France. RHIZOCÉPHALES. Famille des Peltogas+ridae. SEPTOSACCUS RODRIGUEZI (Fraisse, 1876). Hôte : Diogenes pugilator (Roux, 1829). Matériel examiné : 2.851 individus. Fréquence : 219 cas, soit un taux d’infestation de 7,7 p. 100. Stations : Saint-Efflam ; également Locquirec, d’après Pérez (1928). Remarques. — Des taux d’infestation nettement plus élevés ont été donnés pour cette espèce à Saint-Efflam. C’est ainsi que Pérez (1928, 1929) trouvait un degré de parasitisme d’environ 40 p. 100 et que Veillet (1951) indiquait que le quart des Diogenes portait le Septosaccus. -
