© Louth County Archives Service Roden Collection, 1611 – 1986 Repository Code: IE LHA Collection Ref Code: PP00069/ Title: Roden Collection Dates: 1611 – 1986 Level of Description: Fonds Extent: 10 archival boxes, 2 outsize boxes, and 1 outsize map folder Name of Creator(s): Earls of Roden and their agents Admin/Biographical Hist: The town and lands of Dundalk, around 2,500 acres, were granted to Marcus Trevor, Viscount Dungannon, by Charles II in 1667. The third viscount, Mark Trevor, apparently was heavily indebted, and in 1692 the Dundalk estate was sold to James Hamilton of Tollymore, County Down. The son of this James Hamilton, also James, was created Viscount Limerick in 1719, and earl of Clanbrassil in 1756, before his death in 1758, upon which the estates passed to his son, and second earl of Clanbrassil, James, who died without issue in 1798. The estates then passed to the first earl of Clanbrassil’s daughter, Lady Anne Hamilton. The Jocelyns, earls of Roden, were originally based in County Tipperary. Robert Jocelyn was created first earl of Roden, of High Roding, County Tipperary, in 1771. In 1752 he married Lady Anne Hamilton, and on the death of the second earl of Clanbrassil, the earls of Roden succeeded to the Dundalk estate through this marriage. Although the first earl of Roden lived mainly in Tipperary and Dundalk, his grandson the third earl, Robert Jocelyn (1788 – 1870) was based at Tollymore. The Roden line continued through the sons of the third earl until the fifth earl, a younger son, died without issue in 1897.

  • Robert Jocelyn 2Nd Earl of Roden, 3Rd Baron Newport, 6Th Baronet of Hyde Hall (1756 – 1820)
Robert Jocelyn 2nd Earl of Roden, 3rd Baron Newport, 6th Baronet of Hyde Hall (1756 – 1820) Rebellion in Ireland and Hyde Hall internally altered This article is the sixth in my series of ‘follow-ups’ to my earlier article of November 2018 entitled ‘Hyde Hall/Great Hyde Hall’, in which I have been writing about the residents and owners of Hyde Hall, especially the Jocelyn family. Robert Jocelyn was the eldest son of Robert Jocelyn, the 1st Earl of Roden (who was the subject of an earlier article dated January 2019) and his wife Anne (Hamilton). Robert was born on 19 October 1756 (some records give the date as 26 October) and was baptised on 10 December that year at Dundalk in Ireland. In 1776, Robert entered Irish politics and became the MP for Mayoborough, a position he held until 1778. After this, Robert became the MP for Dundalk from 1783 until 1797, both seats being in the Irish House of Commons. Robert also became in 1796 the Auditor General of the Irish Exchequer, a position he held until his death in 1820. Additionally, Robert took a seat in the House of Lords at Westminster from 1800 until his death in 1820, as an Irish Representative Peer and was an Irish Privy Councillor. On 5 February 1788, Robert married Frances Theodosia Bligh, who was the daughter of a senior Irish churchman at St. Andrew’s church near Dundalk. They had six children together, four sons and two daughters. Frances died on 22 May 1802 at Hyde Hall and is buried at Great St.

Cork. The only female Freemason, she first appears in a published list of Irish Freemasons in 1744, having been admitted following an episode at her father’s house, Doneraile Court, Co. Cork, where she accidentally overheard, or deliberately eavesdropped on a lodge meeting. Of the alternatives of swearing her in, or doing her in, the lodge members chose the more merciful. Miscellaneous 122 INTRODUCTION Women’s history is a relatively recent development in the Irish context and has been treated as something of a ‘separatist’ area. As Dr David Fitzpatrick asserted in a recent review ‘It is scarcely surprising that the pioneers of Irish women’s history have concentrated on women acting together in contexts where men appear as either adversaries or outsiders. The experience of the nun, the prostitute, the servant, the suffragist or the IWWU member, was moulded by attachments to social groups or organisations particular to women.

Background: the landed estate system During the 18th and 19th centuries, the landed estate system was a central feature of life as the majority of the population in Ireland lived on large estates belonging to families who were often Anglo-Irish or English. The estates resulted from the grants of lands confiscated by the British Crown in the 17th century and sizes ranged from several hundred acres to thousands of acres spread over a county or province. On the landed estate there existed a system of letting and sub- letting from the landlord to the large farmer to the cottier and small tenant.
