Quick Facts:

• Cigarette butts are toxic to our ocean animals and to us. • Cigarette filters are made of cellulose- acetate, which is not biodegradable. • According to San Diego State University Public Health Professor Tom Novotny, “Even one butt in a liter of water can kill the fish in a period of 96 hours.” • Ocean animals like crabs and salmon can then filter toxins into their systems and transmit the toxins to humans when the animals are eaten. • Over time these toxins can affect human health. It is time to stop the “Butt Cycle.” There needs to be a shift in individual and collective thinking to classify cigarette butts as toxic waste and they should be disposed of in a way that does not hurt our environment.

After School Program Students engage in making a Christmas Ornament for an afternoon craft. The library staff created a card-making station where visitors of the event made Christmas cards that featured Frosty the Snowman and Santa Claus. We would like to thank the Isleta Police Department for once again putting on a great family event! On Thursday, December 19th the After School Program students were treated to a Christmas Party. The library was closed to the general public during this time. Festivities included games such as Toilet Paper Snowman, White Elephant Gift Exchange and a Jingle Box Race. Students were served Dion’s sub sandwiches, chips and cookies. Students also watched the movie Elf on the big screen. We also gave parents a chance to get any last minute shopping and/or gift wrapping done. Future incentive field trips are being planned for the upcoming year. We would like to wish all the students a wonderful break and to continue doing well in school. The library also conducted a Winter Training Camp in collaboration with Gracie Barra Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Sessions were held on December 23rd and December 30th from 12 pm to 2pm. Participants learned proper Jiu- Jitsu format, rules and techniques to apply in competition. WE ARE HERE TO SERVE Isleta Health Center Team When Counseling Helps Talking to others is always helpful and talking with a professional therapist can really help. If emotional or mental health issues did not have such a stigma, people would see a therapist as regularly as they see any other health professional. Is there a special time or circumstance that makes it the “right” time to talk with a counselor?

* Perhaps a loved one was diagnosed with a serious health problem or a loved one passed away. Maybe an important relationship ended.

* Perhaps there is tension at work, home, with family, or with friends.

* You have been “blue” or “down” for a while but do not really know why. You do not have to have a specific reason to justify talking toa professional…if you’ve been sad for a significant period of time - every day, for two weeks or more — it’s time to get help.

* You are avoiding other people – just want to be left alone – while some alone time can be good; avoiding other people can also be a sign of depression.

* You have little or no energy, have difficulty concentrating or remembering, and little motivation for everyday tasks – these could be signs that you have depression – depression is one of the most common mental health issues in this country.

* You worry too much about what might happen or you feel guilty about what has already happened in your life. These emotions can be overwhelming and cause anxiety. Anxiety can really disrupt your regular routine and can even result in panic attacks.

* You feel as though family, friends, and your job all have something negative to say to you and it may feel as though the whole world is against you.

* You are self-medicating to improve or change your mood - maybe one drink or a shot leads to drinking the entire bottle…or you cannot seem to get through the day without a little something. If you’re relying on something to numb yourself or change how you feel – food, alcohol, drugs, gambling, or otherwise — it’s definitely time to talk to someone.

Call 869-5475 and schedule an appointment to meet with a therapist to see if counseling could help you. There are times you cannot wait for an appointment to get the help you need, if you or someone you know is having a mental health crisis, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800- 273-8255, you can also contact the Crises Text Line by texting HOME to 741-741 for 24-hour support, it is free.
