From this last date it is likely that Rose joined her sister, Margaret, in Bolton. The 1911 Census shows her and her sister lodging at 112 Bradshaw Brow, Turton, near Bolton. Rose (40) and Margaret (47) are recorded as being shopkeepers, selling fancy goods. ROSE HINDLEY (1871-1951) 1871ROSE/4 My search for Rose Hindley was triggered by the 1901 Census. In the Spring of 2009 my wife and I travelled to West Yorkshire to search for the School where she had been teaching. The Census gave the Civil Parish as Whitley Upper. We found Upper Whitley Junior and Infant School, a Victorian building with the words Board School included in the original title and decided that this was where Rose taught. Our visit was at a weekend so I decided to write to the present head for details of records. He replied that, after much searching of the school, he had found an old book which listed staff around 1901. There was no Rose Hindley. He did, however, report that a colleague thought that Falhouse was near Whitley Lower. Google Earth could not find the place – I had typed in Fallhouse as in the Census. I decided to write to the Vicar of Whitley Lower Church to ask for information. He passed my letter to a Churchwarden, John Riley. John informed me that Whitley Lower is now known as Whitley. Whitley shares St Mary and St Michael’s Church with Briestfield. Whitley Upper is now known as Grange Moor. The Church School was built in the 1840s and closed because of falling numbers in 1986. The School is now a community centre. John contacted an old lady who had taught at the School and she told him that a few years ago a parishioner came to her with an old school log book. The old teacher contacted Kirklees Archive Service and they were very happy to take it into their keeping. Huddersfield Library (Archive Section) confirmed that Whitley Lower Church School Log Book 1863–1904 was in their possession. (Ref. No. WYK 1468). We arranged a visit to the centre of Huddersfield and I copied the above information (up to 1904) in regulation pencil. Rose was still there in 1904 so I needed to find the next Log Book. It wasn’t until I got home and checked on the internet that I realised that the only other Log Book (Whitley Lower Church of England, First and Middle Schools 1904–1986) was obtainable from the same Library. In fact this Log Book (temporary ref. no. KA39/1) was held off site. A week later on 5th June 2009 we returned to Huddersfield and completed the task, covering the years 1904-1908. Later pages in the Log Book were bound with ribbon on account of the 30 Year Rule of confidentiality. Both log Books were in very good condition. We drove on to Whitley Lower Community Centre and did a circular walk. We walked down Howroyd Lane and struggled up a rough track through a wood (which looks like a good road on the Google map of the area) to Falhouse Lane. Rose might have walked across fields from her lodgings to the Church as there was evidence of a public footpath from Falhouse Lane in the direction of the Church. Falhouse Lane wound uphill to Whitley Road (the main road). We reached Whitley Village, walked past the Church and back to the car. Lunch was gratefully eaten at a country pub, a mile or so north of Grange Moor, where there were extensive views over the moorland. ROSE HINDLEY (1871-1951) 1871ROSE/5 The hamlet (small village) of Falhouse is where Rose was lodging (circled bottom left). The Church is circled in the top right of the picture and the School is a few yards further down the lane close to the corner. Two pictures in Howroyd Lane, Whitley Lower. The Church School is just visible on the right. ROSE HINDLEY (1871-1951) 1871ROSE/6 Whitley Lower, Church of England School 1863-1986. West Yorkshire. It became a Community Centre after 1986.
