The National Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC, by its acronym in Spanish), is the main technical institution of national statistics and coordinator of the National Statistical System (SEN, by its acronym in Spanish). This function was assigned INEC by the Law of the National Statistics System (No 7839 dated November 4, 1998), which was enacted considering, among other things, the importance of relying on timely and current statistical data as the basis for creating economic and social policies.

El Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Censos, es el ente técnico rector de las estadísticas nacionales y coordinador del Sistema de Estadística Nacional (SEN). Esta función le fue asignada en la Ley del Sistema de Estadística Nacional (Nº 7839 de fecha 04 de noviembre de 1998), la cual se promulgó considerando, entre otras cosas, la importancia de contar con datos estadísticos oportunos y actualizados sobre los cuales basarse para establecer políticas económicas y sociales.
