The need to win is everywhere in lifeBy SuncoastThe late Walter Tevis was a fantastic storyteller, especially when the story involves someone who has an inbuilt need to win. This time the tale is about 'Fast Eddie' Felsen, a young pool hustler, who had an ambition to beat the best pool players in the country. After making his seed money in small Pool Halls around the US, Eddie arrives in Chicago to find - the best there is. Travis describes Eddie's first pool battle with Fats almost on a stroke by stroke basis, building up the tension, the exhaustion and the emotional strengths of the two players. This is also a coming of age story for Eddie as he meets shy Sarah, slowly falls in love but doesn't have the emotional strength to understand what is happening. Travis also shows that Eddie can't make it to the top without support from others and how Eddie doesn't realise that he needs that support to achieve his dreams. You don't need to be a pool player to understand what is happening as Travis is a master in describing complex things in simple and understandable language. While his prose is straightforward he is able to put you into the middle of an action-filled and evocative arena. His games become battle scenes as bloody and compelling as scenes on a real battlefield.I first encountered Tevis's work in The Queen's Gambit where the battle scenes were on the chess board (and you didn't need to know how to play chess to appreciate the action). Tevis followed up THE HUSTLER with where we meet Eddie later in life still wanting to follow the ambitions of his youth. I look forward to reading that book soon.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. How should males respond to life challenges?By Johan Sulaiman"The Hustler" is related to the movie by Paul Newman, and later the movie "The Color of Money" with both Newman and Tom Cruise. The book is a surprisingly good classic though, since it opens up the hidden struggle of every man: how should we respond to life challenges? Hidden within every man is the secret desire to win and dominate. If there are docile men out there, it is not because they are born that way, but it is because they have subconsciously developed a losing mentality, complete with the accompanying excuses and rationalization. This book beautifully dissect the psychology behind it, but even more than that, strongly suggests a way out of this negative spiral.A very masculine book; I believe every man should read this, and unloose their shackle of a humdrum life and start living life the way it has always been intended to be: victorious, purposeful, and in full.As a side note, most females will not be able to resonate with the concepts in this book, however, it will give you a fascinating insight into the male's psyche, and might make them better understand what is going on in the minds of their counter-gender.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A must readBy KattySaw the movie many times, and the book is a bit more in detailing. Walter tevis a true to life story teller. A lot of education about as all the characters in this story reveal. A must read. To Fast Eddie Felsen, a young pool hustler, there was only one thing that mattered: to make the big time and the big money in the world of pool by beating the best in the country. Hustling suckers in small towns for good stake money was practice for his goal, and when he felt ready he went to Bennington's pool hall in Chicago to find Minnesota Fats. Eddie and Fats pit nerve against skill in a fantastic match over an unbroken 36 hours. Eddie's final painful loss teaches him that nerve alone isn't enough - guts, stamina, and character make the difference between winners and losers. It takes an interlude with Sarah, an alcoholic and a born loser, to bring the lesson home, and the shrewd advice and backing of Bert, a professional gambler, to put it into practice. Bert knows talent without character is nothing and stakes Eddie to a climactic all-or-nothing rematch. When it is over, Eddie knows a great deal more about big-time pool, about money, and about himself. In beating Fats he became the best in the country.
