  • Repeal of Baseball's Longstanding Antitrust Exemption: Did Congress Strike out Again?
Repeal of Baseball's Longstanding Antitrust Exemption: Did Congress Strike out Again? INTRODUCrION "Baseball is everybody's business."' We have just witnessed the conclusion of perhaps the greatest baseball season in the history of the game. Not one, but two men broke the "unbreakable" record of sixty-one home-runs set by New York Yankee great Roger Maris in 1961;2 four men hit over fifty home-runs, a number that had only been surpassed fifteen times in the past fifty-six years,3 while thirty-three players hit over thirty home runs;4 Barry Bonds became the only player to record 400 home-runs and 400 stolen bases in a career;5 and Alex Rodriguez, a twenty-three-year-old shortstop, joined Bonds and Jose Canseco as one of only three men to have recorded forty home-runs and forty stolen bases in a 6 single season. This was not only an offensive explosion either. A twenty- year-old struck out twenty batters in a game, the record for a nine inning 7 game; a perfect game was pitched;' and Roger Clemens of the Toronto Blue Jays won his unprecedented fifth Cy Young award.9 Also, the Yankees won 1. Flood v. Kuhn, 309 F. Supp. 793, 797 (S.D.N.Y. 1970). 2. Mark McGwire hit 70 home runs and Sammy Sosa hit 66. Frederick C. Klein, There Was More to the Baseball Season Than McGwire, WALL ST. Administration of Barack Obama, 2011 Remarks Honoring the 2010 World Series Champion San Francisco Giants July 25, 2011 The President. Well, hello, everybody. Have a seat, have a seat. This is a party. Welcome to the White House, and congratulations to the Giants on winning your first World Series title in 56 years. Give that a big round. I want to start by recognizing some very proud Giants fans in the house. We've got Mayor Ed Lee; Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom. We have quite a few Members of Congress—I am going to announce one; the Democratic Leader in the House, Nancy Pelosi is here. We've got Senator Dianne Feinstein who is here. And our newest Secretary of Defense and a big Giants fan, Leon Panetta is in the house. I also want to congratulate Bill Neukom and Larry Baer for building such an extraordinary franchise. I want to welcome obviously our very special guest, the "Say Hey Kid," Mr. Willie Mays is in the house. Now, 2 years ago, I invited Willie to ride with me on Air Force One on the way to the All-Star Game in St. Louis. It was an extraordinary trip. Very rarely when I'm on Air Force One am I the second most important guy on there. [Laughter] Everybody was just passing me by—"Can I get you something, Mr. Mays?" [Laughter] What's going on? Willie was also a 23-year-old outfielder the last time the Giants won the World Series, back when the team was in New York.

  • SF Giants Press Clips Wednesday, March 7, 2018
SF Giants Press Clips Wednesday, March 7, 2018 San Francisco Chronicle Tim Lincecum joins Rangers with new contract, heavy heart John Shea SURPRISE, Ariz. — For the first time in his big-league career, Tim Lincecum will wear a number other than 55. He’ll wear 44. “In honor of my brother,” Lincecum said Tuesday after working out at the Texas Rangers’ training facility. “That was his number. Either 12 or 44. Twelve was taken. So it’s 44.” Sean Lincecum, a major part of Tim Lincecum’s upbringing and an inspiration for Tim’s stellar pitching career with the Giants, died last month at 37. He was four years older than Tim, who threw on a side field Tuesday with a heavy heart, the memory of Sean fresh in his mind as he began the next chapter of his career with his third team. Tim flew to Arizona after attending Sean’s funeral Saturday. “That’s a tough thing to put into words right now,” said Lincecum, who declined to specify his brother’s cause of death. “I’ve been thinking about it a lot with the services happening a couple of days ago. For me, I always looked up to my brother. He was an idol for me. He just had a lot of bad runs with choices he made in life. That’s where we’re at right now.” Lincecum’s close relationship with his father, Chris, is well-chronicled. Chris has been his mentor, coach and friend and taught him nonconforming mechanics that helped him flourish in the big leagues.

  • Top Sluggers and Their Home Run Breakdowns
Best of Baseball Prospectus: 1996-2011 Part 1: Offense 6 APRIL 22, 2004 : http://bbp.cx/a/2795 HANK AARON'S HOME COOKING Top Sluggers and Their Home Run Breakdowns Jay Jaffe One of the qualities that makes baseball unique is its embrace of non-standard playing surfaces. Football fields and basketball courts are always the same length, but no two outfields are created equal. As Jay Jaffe explains via a look at Barry Bonds and the all-time home run leaderboard, a player’s home park can have a significant effect on how often he goes yard. It's been a couple of weeks since the 30th anniversary of Hank Aaron's historic 715th home run and the accompanying tributes, but Barry Bonds' exploits tend to keep the top of the all-time chart in the news. With homers in seven straight games and counting at this writing, Bonds has blown past Willie Mays at number three like the Say Hey Kid was standing still, which— congratulatory road trip aside—he has been, come to think of it. Baseball Prospectus' Dayn Perry penned an affectionate tribute to Aaron last week. In reviewing Hammerin' Hank's history, he notes that Aaron's superficially declining stats in 1968 (the Year of the Pitcher, not coincidentally) led him to consider retirement, but that historian Lee Allen reminded him of the milestones which lay ahead. Two years later, Aaron became the first black player to cross the 3,000 hit threshold, two months ahead of Mays. By then he was chasing 600 homers and climbing into some rarefied air among the top power hitters of all time.
