Qualifying teams advance to the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, on June 6-9. The top 24 student-athletes per event per region (East and West) will compete for a spot at the NCAA Championships. Only the top 12 student-athletes per event per region advance to Des Moines, Iowa. In the relay events, only the top 24 relays per region advance to the preliminaries with 12 eventually advancing to the !nals. The NCAA East Region Championships is being hosted by the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Fla. Oregon swept the 2012 Pac-12 Men’s and Women’s Track & Field Champion- ships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. The men won their sixth-consecutive title, while the women won their fourth- straight. Oregon’s six-straight men’s titles is the !rst time since USC won 15-consecutive Paci!c Coast Conference titles from 1936-55. The women’s four-straight crowns is the !rst time since UCLA won eight-straight from 1997-2004. Oregon men scored 140 points to win the meet, followed by ARIZONA STATE (116.50), ARIZONA (94), UCLA (86) and STANFORD and WASHINGTON tied for !fth with 78 points. USC was seventh with 74 points, WASHINGTON STATE placed eighth with 56.50 points, COLORADO was ninth with 48 points, CALIFORNIA was 10th with 44 points and OREGON STATE grabbed four points for 11th place. ASU’s Jordan Clarke, the 2012 NCAA indoor shot put champion, repeated as the Pac-12 Champion in the event, with a 65-2 (19.86m). UA’s Bozidar Antunovic had a 63-0.75 (19.22m) on his !rst throw, which would hold up for second place, while Stanford’s Geoffrey Tabor placed third after posting a 55-5.5 (16.90m). In the pole vault, UW freshman JJ Juilfs won the event, clearing a height of 17-10.25 (5.44m), but went on to set a personal-best of 18-2.5 (5.55m). Sophomores ASU’s Derick Hinich cleared 17-6.25 (5.34m) and UCLA’s Michael Woepse achieved a 17-2.25 (5.24m) for second and third. Woepse’s brother, Greg, was the Conference’s pole vault champion in 2011. In the long jump, the top-four places were achieved on each of the athletes’ third try. The !eld included two of the top-10 jumpers this sea- son. WSU’s Stephan Scott-Ellis was the winner with a mark of 25-9.25 (7.85), which would have ranked in the top 10 in the nation, after posting a season best of 25-1.75 (7.66m), a mark good enough to be ranked in the top 25. Cal’s Hammed Suleman was second with a 25-5.25 (7.76m), the highest Golden Bear placer to this point in the meet. The Wildcats’ Nick Ross was third with a jump of 25-4.25 (7.73m). The steeplechase was close throughout, but Cal’s Collin Jarvis pulled out in front to claim the Conference title with a lifetime-best time of 8:48.05, followed by Colorado’s Aric VanHalen, who crossed the !nish line in a time of 8:50.09. Stanford’s Benjamin Johnson was third with a time of 8:52.90. A pair of junior Wildcats took the top-two spots in the high jump. Nick Ross was the champion in the event, 2012 NCAA West Regional Page 3 clearing a height of 7-2.5 (2.20m). Teammate Edgar Rivera-Morales shared the podium for second place with WSU’s AJ Maricich, both clearing 7-1.25 (2.17m). ASU’s Bryan McBride and WSU’s Jovan Vukicevic also cleared 7-1.25 (2.17m), but tied for fourth. Ranked ninth in the country heading into the weekend in the event, Oregon’s Sam Crouser won the javelin by 19 feet over second-place. He posted 250-10 (76.47m) in his third attempt to eventually claim the individual crown. UW’s Joe Zimmerman was second with a throw of 231-10 (70.67), and in third was UCLA’s Derek Eager with a throw of 223-9 (68.21m). Crouser, who’s father won two Pac-10 titles in the discus in 1982 and 1983 for Oregon, also has an uncle who was the 1984 and 1985 Pac-10 javelin champion as a Duck, as well. In the men’s 10,000-meter race, Arizona’s Stephen Sambu won the event for the second-straight year, !nishing in a time of 29:20.19, over 14 seconds faster than the second-place !nisher UO’s Luke Puskedra (29:34.42). Colorado’s Christian Thompson crossed the !nish line in a time of 29:46.76 to earn third place. ASU wins its !rst men’s 4x100-meter since 2005 with the quad breaking the 40-second mark. The team of Daniel Auberry, Chris Burrows, Rashad Ross and Ryan Milus ran a 39.47 to win the title. The Ducks !nished second, crossing the !nish line in a time of 40.09, while UCLA was third with a time of 40.41. In a close 1,500-meter races, Arizona’s Lawi Lalang, the 2012 Pac-12 and NCAA Cross Country Champion, led for most of the race and regained the lead in the !nal turn and won with a time of 3:47.33.
