HEY COCA FAMILY,

So … they gave me a spot and have allowed me to write you all a message. Mostly I want to just say how honoured and privileged I feel to have been able to serve as your chairperson this year! I’ve been able to work with an amazing family of leaders from across the country! To try to name them all would be pointless, but weather you participated in the community as a member, or associate, completed a survey, volunteered to be on a committee, or just attended a zoom gathering, a huge thank you from myself and everyone associated with COCA. Welcome to the first (and hopefully the only) Student Life Summit to run virtually! As people who thrive with “in-person” contact, through the events we run, the clubs we manage or just working within a busy SU we know how tough it has been on everyone to make all the changes over the past few months and move so much of what we do to a digital format.I’d like to take a moment and welcome Josh Clark as our new Executive Director. Nobody involved with COCA over the past couple of decades could mistake Josh’s commitment to the Student Life community, even if you only heard his laugh in the background you could not miss him. He has been a huge part of this organization in so many ways, and has the respect of everyone he comes in contact with. I’d personally like to thank him for not only stepping into this role but also for how he has faced the challenges this past year has thrown at us all. His ongoing support to the board, the association and the community, with a long term vision of how to navigate this association into the future is appreciated by us all. Josh is a man armed with will and determination, and grace too. We all also need to acknowledge Whitney Piper, and the tremendous effort she has put forward in the past 2 months to step up and put this conference together. It’s been a pleasure watching your professional commitment to this summit, reforming committees, and moving the whole event digital in a less than ideal timeline, budget, and format. Your enthusiasm is contagious and simply put, this event would not have happened without you. Please take a moment out of your day to say thanks to Whitney, for whom, it seems, courage couldn’t have come at a worse time. The board had large goals this year, to do an Executive Director Search, launch a new website, and redesign the annual conference ... and we C R A I G B E R R Y / / also had to deal with coronavirus as well. We all need to thank the board this year, and in no particular order, Andy, Crystal, Ryan, C O C A C H A I R , U N I V E R S I T Y Gabrielle, Cody, Kelsey, John b., Justine, and John … you each embody the simple principal that there is no dress rehearsal, this is O F A L B E R T A our life. (and thank you all for allowing me a Gord Downie hat trick of references). One of the great things about COCA is that it really is a “family”, if you are facing any challenge in your role at your school, you can bet that someone within COCA has already faced it and is ready to share their solution with you. Finally, congratulations to everyone for taking the time to reconnect and learn together. By being here you have joined a community of hundreds of event, clubs and marketing professionals committed to learn, connect and grow together.

Your friend,

Craig-

S T U D E N T L I F E S U M M I T / / 0 5 CONFERENCE CHAIR M E S S A G E

WELCOME,

North, South, East and West this is your first ever Student Life Summit Virtual Conference, powered by COCA. On behalf of the Canadian Organization of Campus Activities and myself, Whitney Piper would like to send a tremendous thank you to all who made this conference possible. I would also like to say welcome to anyone who is joining us for their first COCA conference, it’s a pleasure to have you. This year was a brand-new experience for us all. Having to adapt to the new “norm” has definitely had its learning curves. None of which could be done without the support of our associate members and volunteers putting in their own time to contribute to this conference. This year like the rest, we will feature artists and speakers from the best that the industry has to offer. All of us were forced to alter many aspects in our lives when the pandemic hit. Now more than ever we need to focus on making positive and meaningful experiences for the new wave of on-line learning and programming for all students.Like always, you’re encouraged to ask questions, make connections and participating W H I T N E Y P I P E R / / in everything COCA (from the comfort of your home). This year is unlike any other year. We will C O C A C O N F E R E N C E C H A I R , have people join us that have never experienced a COCA conference before. This is a great F L E M I N G C O L L E G E S A C opportunity to network on a whole other level. Please, take advantage of all the on-line education sessions, showcases and networking nights. I hope you all enjoy!

Cheers, until we can all be together again!
