NAIA National Tournament Participant - 2009 - 9th Place VANGUARD UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA 2011 SEASON OUTLOOK Missing the playoffs in 2010 after the program's first NAIA Tournament appearance in 2009, VU's Director of Soccer Randy Dodge and the Lions will be looking at a very different team from a year ago. Losing the heart of the team with 8 graduating seniors, including major impacts like All-GSAC and NAIA players Ivana Mendez, Karri Currier, and Danielle Dintino, the Lions will be looking for players to step up in the leadership areas offensively and defensively. Dodge welcomes back a solid core of seniors in Kat McDonald, Gabriela Valles, Kimberly James, and Rachel Jones, but will also look for juniors like Amanda Couch, Lauren Evans and Rachael Rucireta to pick up the slack. The recruiting class includes NCAA DI and II transfers Lindsey Holman-Kelly (Pepperdine), Lauren Skachenko (CPP), Jordan Cleary (CSUSB), and junior college players Sarah Warner (OCC), Sara Gomez (OCC), and Margot Valenzuela (SBCC) topping the list. In addition, freshmen Janell Koide (AHS) and Lauren Terry (SHS) should contribute as well, leading to a bright outlook for the Lions. Despite returning senior leadership, the VU coaching staff will have a completely different team than a year ago in all aspects and has planned a strong preseason schedule to prepare the new team to compete among the best NAIA teams in the nation, the Golden State Athletic Conference.
