Se da un lato ci viene promesso l’arrivo di una cornucopia di beni e servizi portati dall’intelligenza artificiale, dall’altro ci viene detto che quasi metà dei posti di la- voro attuali sarà prossimamente soppressa perché robot più flessibili, più rapidi, più efficienti di noi sostituiranno non solo gli impiegati e gli operai ma anche una parte sostanziale di avvocati, medici, commercialisti.1 I vari contributi di questo numero cercano di affrontare la questione da diversi punti di vista. L’intelligenza artificiale trasformerà le nostre vite? FabrizioTonello fa il punto sul dibattito su robot, produttività e “stagnazione secolare”, quella che secondo alcuni economisti americani ormai ci attende. Segue la ripubblicazione, a cura di Steven Colatrella, di estratti dell’opuscolo di Paul Romano (pseudonimo di Phil Singer) The American Worker, apparso in inglese nel 1947 e, subito dopo, in francese nella rivista di Cornelius Castoriadis e Claude Lefort Socialisme ou Barbarie. Ci è sembrato necessario riproporlo perché descrive un mondo – quello della fabbrica fordista – per il quale spesso circolano all’interno della sinistra immeritate nostal- gie. Le macchine del 1947 erano pericolose, nocive, sporche, abbrutenti: è opportu- no ricordare anche questo quando si discute delle condizioni di lavoro oggi. Uomini e macchine Ácoma n. 15, Autunno-Inverno 2018, ISSN: 2421-423X 5 UOMINI E MACCHINE Il problema non sono i robot, ma il capitalismo Fabrizio Tonello* Man is the lowest-cost, 150-pound, nonlinear, all-purpose computer system which can be mass-produced by unskilled labor.1 (NASA report, 1965) Il dibattito su uomini e macchine è tutt’altro che nuovo: tralasciando il fin troppo citato Frankenstein, una creazione europea, prendiamo il celebre dipinto di William Gast del 1872, intitolato American Progress. Nel quadro osserviamo l’avanzata del progresso, che da destra (l’est atlantico) marcia verso sinistra (l’ovest); una prospe- rosa fanciulla avanza nell’aria ma non ha bisogno di ali: è forse il filo del telegrafo che tiene in mano a spingerla dolcemente verso il Pacifico. Alle sue spalle seguono i treni a vapore, mentre più lontano vediamo un affaccendato porto, riconoscibile per New York dai contorni dell’isola di Manhattan e dal ponte di Brooklyn, allora in costruzione. Dove la tecnologia avanza, la wilderness arretra, fugge: mandrie di bisonti in fuga, indiani che non hanno ancora scoperto la ruota e orsi inferociti cercano rifu- gio in un’oscurità che, ben presto, sarà dissipata dalle luci della Civiltà. Chi può avere dubbi sulla benedizione rappresentata dalle moderne macchine, portatrici di comodità fino a pochi decenni prima impensabili? In effetti, se Cesare avesse visitato gli Stati Uniti al di là degli Appalachi nel 1840 non avrebbe avuto alcuna difficoltà nel comprendere la vita quotidiana de- gli americani dell’epoca, che per la stragrande maggioranza vivevano in fattorie, zappavano con attrezzi rudimentali e si spostavano a cavallo come i romani di duemila anni prima. Se invece fosse ritornato sul posto nel 1940 avrebbe scoperto un mondo per lui incomprensibile, al di là di ogni immaginazione, con case ma- gicamente illuminate dall’elettricità, “carrozze” a quattro ruote che si muovevano da sole, perfino ordigni volanti che portavano le persone da una città all’altra. È stato questo secolo, tra la metà dell’Ottocento e la metà del Novecento, a vedere il trionfo della macchina, a creare la promessa di un futuro senza limiti in cui la biblica minaccia “Lavorerai la terra col sudore della fronte” sarebbe svanita come nebbia al mattino. William Gast dipingeva nel 1872: appena sette anni dopo, nel 1879, sarebbe apparsa la luce elettrica e sarebbe stato inventato il motore a combustione interna, quello che ha creato la civiltà automobilistica (e le guerre per il petrolio) del XX secolo. Il numero di città americane in grado di fornire acqua corrente ai propri cit- tadini si moltiplicò per dieci tra il 1870 e il 1900. Negli anni Ottanta del XIX secolo nacquero in rapida successione il telefono, il fonografo, il cinema (che si sarebbe affermato solo più tardi). Uomini e macchine 6 Ácoma n. 15, Autunno-Inverno 2018, ISSN: 2421-423X UOMINI E MACCHINE È la massa critica creata da queste invenzioni, insieme ai progressi della chimi- ca, che ha permesso lo spettacolare miglioramento del tenore di vita tra il 1870 e il 1970, l’illusione che le macchine avrebbero dato a tutti gli americani, se non la ricchezza, quanto meno una vita “migliore di quella di un re africano” nonostante la Grande depressione e due incredibilmente distruttive guerre mondiali (come un certo Adam Smith aveva profetizzato già nel 1776, l’anno dell’Indipendenza). La tesi di un progresso quasi senza limiti era condivisa da tutti, a cominciare da Lenin, secondo il quale la produzione su larga scala, i macchinari, le ferrovie, la rete telefonica avrebbero offerto l’opportunità di ridurre di tre quarti il tempo di lavoro. Negli anni Trenta, economisti assai diversi tra loro come John Maynard Keynes e Joseph Schumpeter manifestavano la loro fiducia non solo nella ripresa dell’economia dopo la crisi del 1929 ma si spingevano assai più in là: “È cosa co- mune sentir dire dalla gente che è ormai conclusa l’epoca dell’enorme progresso economico che ha caratterizzato il XIX secolo”,

Coleman ____________________________________ They Died with Their Boots On Somewhere back in the 1950’s there was a movie made about the United States Cavalry called “They Died with Their Boots On”. As an avid follower of Saturday morning serials and anything starring John Wayne or Randolph Scott I recall going to see that movie. Some of the older generation may remember it. It is unlikely however that anybody below the age of 50 will. I don’t remember the specific plot. However, I do recall in the end a whole bunch of cavalry guys got wiped out by the Indians. The reason it happened is they did a whole bunch of stupid things. In the movie all of those guys were heroes. Yes, they died with their boots on. But being dead is a very limited reward for recognition. Recently, I got myself aligned with a system on the Internet that advises me of every line of duty death that occurs. And, it sure appears to be that fire fighters are still dying with their boots on too. Not unlike the Cavalry soldiers of the last century they are sallying forth into battle sometimes poorly lead and sometimes drastically under estimating the situation. Now that I think about it the main theme of the movie that I referred to in the previous chapters was General George S. Custer. The fight was the Little Big Horn and Custer’s Last Stand. Can we really afford more last stands at the scene of fires? I have read all the literature I can get my hands on, on fire fighters safety.

A busybody by nature with obsessive tendencies. She is 28. Roy A spirited teenage girl. A seer and believer. She is turning 18. Dusty A simple man with a philosophical mind. He is disheveled, sloppy, and gentle. He is early 30s. Mack Grimm A fourteen-year-old boy with a steely-eyed glare. He appears ragged, dirty, dangerous. The Man A man in his fifties. He wears a rumpled, old-fashioned suit that is slightly too large for him and looks like it has been buried in the ground. Setting The present. A kitchen, connected to a porch, connected to an expanse of yard. In the kitchen, a table and four chairs. On the porch, a six-foot-long hope chest. It’s shaped like a coffin. The porch is surrounded by orange ditch lilies: plastic flowers in real dirt. The inside and outside blend together. Author’s Note There is little sarcasm in this play. The play works best when the characters are played with sincerity, and likewise, when irony is underplayed rather than overplayed. Scene One. Morning. Nan waters the ditch lilies with a pitcher of water. On the porch, the radio mumbles Willie Nelson’s “Sad Songs and Waltzes.” Roy, her younger sister, sits on the stoop, watching. ROY I feel so kin to ditch lilies.

She’s take me away and out into her new car – that smells new and – a convertible and – with the roof down and we’d drive far away to this house – this castle she lives in and I’d live there too and I’d have my own huge fucking room…So I’m thinking this and the woman, she gets up and starts walking over to me. I’m thinking: “HOLY SHIT! HOLY SHIT! It really IS my mother!” I got so nervous. She comes right up to me. Standing right there. ALAN ALDA (NARRATION) Wally started a journal to do what he says we all should - look at alternative medicine with a cool, scientific eye. But given human nature, that's easier said than done. ALAN ALDA I know people who started out thinking, for instance, that acupuncture was foolishness. I mean, how could there be these meridians in the body and Qi coursing through your body? How could needles have any effect on it? Then they got desperate because they're in pain. Then they went to an acupuncturist and felt relief from their symptoms. And they went from being highly skeptical to now recommending it to their friends. What happens there? What's going on there? WALLY SAMPSON That's a very deep experience for people. It's almost like having a transcendent or a religious discovery experience. When two events occur in close proximity, one beforehand is always interpreted as having something to do with the second one. Now the trick is to tell the difference between what really was the cause and what was the natural history of what was going to happen anyway.
