  • An Assessment on the Influence of Salinity in the Growth of Black Clam
AACL BIOFLUX Aquaculture, Aquarium, Conservation & Legislation International Journal of the Bioflux Society An assessment on the influence of salinity in the growth of black clam (Villorita cyprinoides) in cage in Cochin Estuary with a special emphasis on the impact of Thanneermukkom salinity barrier Aloorkalarickal U. Arun Department of Marine Biology, Microbiology and Biochemistry, School of Marine Sciences, Cochin University of Science and Technology, Cochin – 16, Kerala, India. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract. Regular tidal flow, estuarine circulation and other allied hydrographical parameters in the Cochin Estuary has changed due to regular closure and opening of Thanneermukkom bund and entry of saline water in to the estuary. Temperature, salinity and bottom sediment texture are found to be the important factors significant for the growth and survival of bivalves. The environmental condition on different parts of the estuary especially at station II (south of bund), station IV (north of bund) and station V (near to bar mouth) showed a clear and distinct variation in all the hydrographical parameters due to the existence of Thanneermukkom bund and bar mouth. At stations II the frequency of temperature fluctuation was high and the dominant environment was freshwater when compared with station IV. Sediment texture at station II was sandy silt and at station IV was silty sand. At station V the dominant condition was saline and sediment texture was clayey in nature. A higher salinity was noted throughout the study period at station V. At station II the annual average growth was 8.48 mm; at station IV it was 15.15 mm and at station V it was 9.64 mm.

  • Role of Co-Operative Societies in Black Clam Fishery and Trade in Vembanad Lake
6 Marine Fisheries Information Service T&E Ser., No. 207, 2011 Role of co-operative societies in black clam fishery and trade in Vembanad Lake N. Suja and K. S. Mohamed Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, Kochi Lime shells and live clams are distributed in large quantities in the backwaters and estuaries of Kerala. Vembanad, the largest lake of Kerala, also holds a vast resource of lime shells and live clam, comprising several species. The major species that account for the clam fishery of Vembanad Lake is the black clam Villorita cyprinoides. The lime shells that contribute to the fishery are broadly classified as the ‘white shells’ and the ‘black shells’. The so-called ‘white shells’ are sub-soil deposits of fossilized shells and are known to extend upto 7 feet below the lake bottom. The black shells are obtained from the living population of V. cyprinoides, which contribute more than 90% of the clams from this lake. The lime shell is mainly used for the manufacture of cement, calcium carbide and sand lime bricks. They are also used for lime burning, for construction, in paddy field / fish farms for neutralizing acid soil and as slaked lime. This is used as a raw material for the manufacture of distemper, glass, rayon, paper and sugar. Shell Control Act The Government of India has listed lime shell as a minor mineral under the Mineral Concession Fig. 1. Location of black clam lime shell industrial co-operative Rules, 1949, Section 5 of the Mines and Minerals. societies The acquisition, sale, supply and distribution of lime shell in the State are at present controlled by Black clam lime shell industrial co-operative the Kerala Lime Shells Control Act, 1958.

  • The Mararikulam Experiment
Grassroots Economic Organizing Newsletter (GEO) 58:8–11. http://www.geo.coop The Mararikulam Experiment: Women-Owned Cooperatives Are the Key Elements of A People’s Alternative to Corporate Dominated Globalization in India’s Kerala State By Richard W. Franke In Kerala State, India, a promising development project is underway to create a democratically managed local economy that can bring households out of poverty while resisting some of the most harmful elements of globalization. Its planners and activists call it “The Mararikulam Experiment.” The main components of the Mararikulam experiment are 1,500 “neighborhood groups” (NHGs) made up of 20 to 40 women each. The project is transforming these groups into worker-owned cooperatives producing items for sale in the local economy using local materials. The project goal is to generate up to 20,000 jobs paying enough to bring the households above the local poverty line. Because the cooperatives are owned and managed by the women workers, all the surplus can be distributed as wages and benefits or can be reinvested for product improvement or other company costs. By being worker owned, the cooperatives are automatically locally owned. The members can see their purpose as generating wealth in their neighborhoods even if profit rates are below those of some private companies. Where Is Mararikulam? Mararikulam is a state legislative assembly district along the coast of central Kerala. The area is made up of 8 villages and two towns comprising a population of 272,000, 60% of whom live below the locally established poverty line of 23,000 rupees, about $480 per year.

Wular Lake in J&K, Chilika Lake in Orissa and Vembanad Kol in Kerala, for assessing the status of implementation of the National Wetland Conservation and Management Programme (NWCMP). 2. Visit itinerary The Team comprising Dr.(Mrs.) Indrani Chandrasekharan, Advisor(E&F), Planning Commission, Dr. T. Balasubramanian, Director, CAS in Marine Biology, Annamalai University and Dr. V. Sampath, Ex-Advisor, MoES and UNDP Sr. National Consultant, visited Vembanad lake and held discussions at the Vembanad Lake and Alleppey on 30 June and 1st July 2008. Details of presentations and discussions held on 1st July 2008 are at Appendix-2. 3. The Vembanad Lake Kerala has a continuous chain of lagoons or backwaters along its coastal region. These water bodies are fed by rivers and drain into the Lakshadweep Sea through small openings in the sandbars called ‘azhi’, if permanent or ‘pozhi’, if temporary. The Vembanad wetland system and its associated drainage basins lie in the humid tropical region between 09˚00’ -10˚40’N and 76˚00’-77˚30’E. It is unique in terms of physiography, geology, climate, hydrology, land use and flora and fauna. The rivers are generally short, steep, fast flowing and monsoon fed.

  • Chapter I Tsunami
Executive summary In the morning hours of 26 December, 2004, huge seismic sea waves triggered by massive undersea earthquake in the Indian Ocean caused the death of many thousands of people, leaving tens of thousands homeless in India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Maldives. Fishermen, tourists and people living on the coast were unprepared for the waves that rose upto 6 meters high throughout the Indian Ocean, Andaman Sea and Arabian Sea. The earthquake, had its epicenter 257 km south southwest of Banda Aceh in Sumatra, Indonesia. This was the most powerful earthquake experienced in the region during the last 40 years. 176 persons were killed in Kerala as tsunami waves rising over the Arabian Sea invaded the land, wreaking havoc and destruction in the coastal fishing hamlets in the southern districts of the state. This report presents the impact of tsunami on natural eco systems. The marine environment in the southwest coast between Thottapally and Muttam has been successfully affected as a result of the impact of Tsunami , as reflected by the following findings : The concentration of nutrients has been reduced at all transects just after tsunami. However, values gradually picked up in the period from January to May 2005. Primary productivity had been drastically reduced in the wake of tsunami, especially near Vizhinjam and Kolachel. This also has improved considerably evident from the samples collected in May 2005. There was a lowering of plankton species diversity just after tsunami period, in January 2005. The fish catch has been reduced subsequent to tsunami. This has shown considerable improvement now, as reported by the fishermen from that area.
