Your support is highly appreciated. ii Abstract This study has been conducted to examine the causes and the impact of youth unemployment in Durban townships in South Africa with a specific focus on Cato Manor Township. Through the use qualitative and quantitative research methods, the study aims to find out why youth unemployment persists to pose a challenge, especially in township areas despite the fact that the South African government has implemented a number of programmes, measures and strategies to address it. Data collection techniques such as personal interviews, focus group interviews and observation as well as questionnaires have been used to collect data from three group categories: unemployed young people without matriculation; unemployed young people with matriculation as well as unemployed young people with tertiary qualifications aged 18 to 34 years. This study has discovered that lack of relevant skills and qualifications; lack of relevant previous work experience; high rate of corruption, nepotism and connections in the labour market are some of the major factors that increase unemployment among the youth especially in townships. This makes it hard for the companies (private companies) and government to create more job opportunities. Findings reveal that youth unemployment is not just a threat on its own; it also has a bearing on other problems such as poverty, crime and drugs abuse. As most young people find it hard to meet their basic needs such as food, shelter and clothes due to unemployment, they end up committing crime in attempt to meet such needs. This study then calls for skills development on different categories in order to address the issue of youth unemployment in Durban townships. This will help in closing the gaps between the skills needed by the employers and the skills possessed by most young people. The companies (private companies) and the government must also ensure that only the qualified and deserving people are employed into job positions in order to avoid the cases of nepotism, favouritism and cronyism in the recruitment sphere. This can be achieved through ensuring that the employment procedures and processes are being monitored accordingly and transparently.     Xavier Livermon SECURING PRIDE: SEXUALITY, SECURITY, and the POST APARTHEID STATEi Abstract In this essay, I argue for a reconceptualization of security sector reform in Africa, taking into account how Queer Theory might expand our understandings of security and insecurity on the African continent. Drawing from theories of human security, I argue for the denaturalization of gender and sexuality in considerations of security in sub-Saharan Africa. Furthermore, I argue for the importance of forms of vernacular security. Using Soweto Pride as an example, I demonstrate how cultural and representational practices become key sites for forging lasting forms of security for vulnerable populations. I conclude by revealing how Queer Theory framework in relation to security sector reform might allow for framing security outside of carceral state practices. INTRODUCTION In contemporary South Africa, security has emerged as a key word in the postapartheid neoliberal state. Insecurity was a marked feature of the declining years of the National Party government from the late 1970s to the 1994 elections. Insurrectionary, near revolutionary conditions created by internal dissent fueled various different forms of state reprisal and repression. These forms of state repression, while not new took on a different interpretative character as South Africa was positioned internationally as a pariah state that could no longer claim moral authority in relation to state sponsored violence both within and outside its borders. Its last gasp of legitimacy, as a bulwark against communism ceased to be a sufficient cause for blatant racial oppression post 1989. The National Party, rocked by internal dissent, unable to govern the black masses, and increasingly isolated internationally, sought a negotiated settlement.

On the Television side, Nonhlanhla was involved in the Metro FM Music Award in 2014 and 2015 where she was an assistant in production, under James, the MD. At the Metro FM Awards, she got the chance to assist in all areas on the live broadcast production. She has also worked as a location sound recordist assistant for DMP productions for Mnet Mzansi Magic movies. Nonhlanhla was involved in the X- Factor production, recording all the sound tracks for the show, and the Top 3 singles which was broadcast live on SABC1.

Abstract The arrival of democracy in South Africa brought with it challenges that needed to be addressed to overcome the inequalities of the past. To a significant degree, the discrimination against not only race groups but also against women in general had to be tackled. Against this background, policies and legislation on achieving employment equity emerged. Despite this, a gender disparity still exists in the area of sports management. Regardless of efforts made by government and other sporting bodies to eliminate gender inequality, hurdles still remain at all levels. The aim of this study is to explore the reasons for this gender disparity, identifying the constraints on women’s advancement and the challenges that they face in advancing in sport as managers (in various capacities). It also identifies appropriate policy interventions. This serves as a case study for broader issues of equity within a South African context and probes the situation more generally with regards to the position of women in sport management in South Africa. The study presents the views of a selection of women in sport management and themes that were identified.

Mobs of Africans rampaged through areas within the city attacking Indians and looting and destroying Indian-owned property. During the conflict 87 Africans, SO Indians, one white and four 'unidentified' people died. One factory, 58 stores and 247 dwellings were destroyed; two factories, 652 stores and 1 285 dwellings were damaged.1 What caused the violence? Why did it take an apparently racial form? What was the role of the state? There were those who made political mileage from the riots. Others grappled with the tragedy. The government commission of enquiry appointed to examine the causes of the violence concluded that there had been 'race riots'. A contradictory argument was made. The riots arose from primordial antagonism between Africans and Indians. Yet the state could not bear responsibility as the outbreak of the riots was 'unforeseen.' It was believed that a neutral state had intervened to restore control and keep the combatants apart.2 The apartheid state drew ideological ammunition from the riots. The 1950 Group Areas Act, in particular, was justified as necessary to prevent future endemic conflict between 'races'. For municipal officials the riots justified the future destruction of African shantytowns and the rezoning of Indian residential and trading property for use by whites.

The 2016 Freedom House report for South Africa states: “Xenophobic violence against immigrants from other African countries has broken out sporadically in recent years. In a wave of attacks that spread from Durban to Johannesburg in April, foreign-owned shops were torched, thousands of people were displaced, and at least seven people were killed. Further xenophobic violence was reported in October and November, including some deadly attacks.” (Freedom House (24 May 2016) Freedom in the World 2016 - South Africa) The 2016 Human Rights Watch report on the events of 2015 in South Africa, in a paragraph headed “Xenophobic Attacks on Foreign Nationals”, states: “In April 2015, thousands of people looted foreign-owned shops and attacked non-South African nationals in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal province. Several people died and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said an estimated 2,400 people were internally displaced. The targets of the widespread violence were immigrants of African origin, mostly from Zimbabwe and Somalia. The xenophobic attacks spread to parts of Johannesburg before authorities deployed the army to stop the violence. This power has been delegated to me in terms of Section63 (1) (b) of the Act. Therefore,I,Deborah Mochotlhi, in my capacity as the Acting Director -Generalof the Department of Water and Sanitation hereby under delegated authority, interms of item 6 (1) of Schedule 3 read with section 72(1) of the Act, publish a notice in the gazetteto amend and limit the taking and storing of water in terms of section 21(a) and 21(b) byall users in the geographical areas listed and described below, as follows: 1. The Algoa Water Supply System (WSS) and associated primary catchments: Decrease the curtailment from 30% to 25% on all taking of waterfrom surface or groundwater resources for domestic and industrial water use from the Algoa WSS and the relevant parts of the catchments within which the Algoa WSSoccurs.
