TO PETER SOMMER TR AVELS Writing this in autumn 2020, it is hard to know quite where to begin. I usually review the season just gone, the new tours that we ran, the preparatory recces we made, the new tours we are unveiling for the next year, the feedback we have received and our exciting plans for the future. However, as you well know, this year has been unlike any other in our collective memory. Our exciting plans for 2020 were thrown into disarray, just like many of yours. We were so disappointed that so many of you were unable to travel with us in 2020. Our greatest pleasure is to share the destinations we have grown to love so deeply with you our wonderful guests. I had the pleasure and privilege of speaking with many of you personally during the 2020 season. I was warmed and touched by your support, your understanding, your patience, and your generosity. All of us here at PST are extremely grateful and heartened by your enthusiasm and eagerness to travel with us when it becomes possible. PST is a small, flexible, and dynamic company. We have weathered countless downturns during the many years we have been operating. Elin, my wife, and I have always reinvested in the business with long term goals and are very used to surviving all manner of curve balls, although COVID-19 is certainly the biggest we have yet faced. -

Latinopoulos Faculty of Civil Engineering, School of Technology, Aristotle University ofThessaloniki, GR 540 06 Thessaloniki, Greece Abstract In the period between the 7th and the 3rd centuries B.C. the Greek philosophers and scientists made significant contributions to the science of hydrology. Motivated by a strong desire to explain the natural phenomena Thales, Plato, and Aristotle as well as their contemporaries sowed the first seeds of hydrology as a science. On the other hand architects and engineers of the time practised remarkable technical skills in constructing and operating various elements of water systems that were emphatically required in the growing urban areas. 1 Introduction The period between the 7th and the 3rd centuries B.C. can be characterized as the most eventful in the history of ancient Greece. The dramatic social and political changes that took place during this era of Hellenic Civilization had a distinct impact and a great influence on the development of many branches of sciences. Among them the water science has an important place concerning both theoretical issues and practical innovations. The establishment of basic principles of the water science was mainly driven by a new philosophic approach: not only to control - as it was done during previous civilizations - but also to understand nature. The contribution of Greek philosophers to the development of the water science, or the science of hydrology in particular, is marked by the fact that for the first time man attempted to give thought to natural causes rather than divine ones and also pursued knowledge for its own sake. -

Temple Reuse in Late Antique Greece Stefan Moffat Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Master of Arts Degree in Classics Supervisor: Dr. Geoffrey Greatrex Department of Classics and Religious Studies Faculty of Arts University of Ottawa July 2017 © Stefan Moffat, Ottawa, Canada, 2017 Abstract The subject of this thesis is the variety of ways that temples were reused by Romans, both Christian and non-Christian, at the end of Antiquity in the present-day country of Greece. It discusses these means of reuse using principally archaeological evidence as a means of countering interpretations of the material culture that temples were either destroyed or reused as churches. These interpretations are based on the assumption that contemporary written sources such as Saints’ ‘Lives’ (the literary genre known as hagiography) are an accurate portrayal of temple reuse in Late Antiquity, without taking into consideration the legendary nature of hagiography. On the other hand, they do not account for potentially contradictory evidence of temple reuse derived from archaeological excavation. It is argued in this thesis that archaeological evidence provides an alternative outcome to that described in contemporary written sources such as hagiography, one that emphasizes practical forms of temple reuse rather than religious. The evidence for this argument is presented at both a geographic level and as discreet categories of forms of reuse of both a religious and practical nature, as a first glimpse of the nuanced image of temple reuse in Greece. Specific examples of the evidence are then cited in a number of case studies to be further developed as a valid attribute in the characterisation of the Late Antique sacred landscape at the level of the Roman Empire. -

In this paper we try to provide an answer to the question ‘why Eypalinos selected the specific path for the aqueduct?’ on the basis of geotechnical and geodetic evidence. Two basic criteria should have been satisfied for the tunnel planning: first, that it had to be excavated through rocks with mechanical properties suitable for a safe underground excavation, and second, that the portals should have been in areas permitting accurate geodetic orientation and guidance of the excavation. The overall selection of the tunnel path indicates that Eupalinos had an excellent understanding of the the- ory of errors and an ability for geological and geotechnical evaluation of the mechanical characteristics of the ground, i.e. a primitive system of the rock strength classification, with remarkable similarities with the modern GSI method. -

Soulis2, Demetrios E. Tsesmelis3, Georgios Avgoustidis4, Ioannis Spilanis5 Abstract The ecological and economic stakes of the climate change impacts are posed in particular terms on islands, especially in the Mediterranean, where summer tourism is one of the pillars of the activity of island communities. The climate scenarios for the Mediterranean islands up to 2050 make it possible to better identify, at the scale of each island, the modifications that Climate Change (CC) is likely to imply on the water balance. The results for 360 islands (104,263 km²) over the whole basin give an average temperature evolution of +2.3°C with values between +1.8 and +2.9°C. This means a rise of potential evapotranspiration of the order of 135 mm/year with local values varying between 110 mm/year and 170 mm/year. The change in relative annual precipitation varies between -11.6% and +2.9% with an average of -6.5%. The regional analysis shows that the water balance should be more impacted in the eastern part especially in the Aegean Sea and along the southern shore of the Mediterranean. The rainfall deficit coupled with the increase in evapotranspiration would result locally in a significant reduction of surface runoff and underground water recharges, which could be of the order of 40% on average over the year. On top of interannual variations, there is a high degree of uncertainty about water resources in 2050. -

Throughout the history of urban centers, a sufficient water supply has been the backbone of each city. All sources of water, rivers, lakes, springs, underground sources, and rainwater collection, were exploited for urban supply starting from the earliest civilizations. The specific choice was depending upon the civilization, the geomorphology, the topography, and the local climatic and hydrological conditions. No large-scale lifting techniques were available; thus, water was transferred from the source by aqueducts from a higher altitude. Cisterns used for collection of rain water and wells for drawing groundwater were very well developed since the Bronze Age. During historical times, Greeks and later Romans reached a high level of water supply technologies that greatly influenced modern achievements in water engineering and management. Only in the last 9000 to 10000 years they discovered how to grow crops and tame animals. Such revolution probably first took place in the hills to the north of Mesopotamia. -
