Journalists Visit Romania By Jim Thompson As you know, many members of The Alliance gathered in Romania a few weeks ago. It was a wonderful event and very different from the usual meetings and gatherings involving FIJET. It was a week free of politics, meetings and intrigue. There was no complaining about schedules, hotel accommodations or meeting times. There were no ceremonies, boring speeches or demands on our time. Instead, it was a gathering of journalists with time to exchange ideas, get to know about the many wonders of Romania, talk about our profession and discuss ways of cooperating in the future. Our host, Victor Radulescu, did an excellent job of organizing the event that included a near perfect blending of interesting locations, information for articles and meetings with officials. Aside from a few minor occasions, we managed to stay with the schedule without feeling pushed or pressured and without insulting our hosts by not arriving as promised. In a testament to his skills as an organizer and manager, Victor managed to show us the very best of Gorj County and southern Romania. He did all of this while juggling a demanding schedule of producing and editing two hour long programs for The Money Channel (Romanian Television). He and Iulia Mladin worked constantly to produce an excellent program on our visit and on the current workings of the Romanian tourism efforts. A special thanks goes to Victor for his kindness, his efficiency and for all of his efforts! We began our visit (October 10-16) at the wonderful Phoenicia Grand Hotel in Bucharest. -

BALKAN CINEMA VERSUS CINEMA OF THE BALKAN NATIONS 1. History of Cinema in the Balkans: Common Pioneers and Similarities When two people have the same idea it does not mean it belongs to neither of them but it belongs to the entire society where they live. Eugène Ionesco Of course, we have not intended to write a very history of cinema in the Balkans but a review of the important events in such a history by identifying similitudes and common facts, beyond simple coincidences. For Dejan Kosanović and other specialists in the beginnings of cinema the first film screenings in Belgrade (24th of May 1896), Bucharest (27th of May 1896), Zagreb (8th of October 1896), Rousse (17th of February 1897) and Sofia (27th of February 1897)1 seem to a result of the activity of a numerous team of technicians of Lumière Frères Company who were travelling in the Balkans and were sharing the assignment of making first demonstrations in several towns in the region. Anyway, it is known that Georgi Kuzmić made the first screening in Bulgaria, at Rousse, on the 27th of February 1897, two days after a screening in Bucharest. Later on the beginnings of the cinema industry and the first local productions are due to Western firms and technicians, as well as to the instruction secured by them to local filmmakers. French, Austrian and Hungarian technicians like Paul Menu2, Georges Ercole, L. Schwedler, J. Janovics, J.Bertok, and Alexander Korda etc. worked in Romania. In Greece besides Italian and Austrian technicians a decisive contribution had the Hungarian Josef Hepp (1897- 1968), author of the first Greek newsreels and later on cameraman and producer between 1917- 1961 of no less than 18 fiction films, from Annoula’s Dowry/ I prika tis Annoulas to Tragedy of the Aegean Sea/ I Tragodhia tou Aegeou. -

RJHIS 4 (1) 2017 The Heroism of Romanian Soldiers from Comarnic, Prahova, during the First World War Maria Cristina Ilincuța* Angela Năsulea* Abstract: The purpose of this article is to initiate a discussion on Romania’s situation during the First World War. Beyond the military operations, which often ended in failure, as they were wrongly conceived and designed by the Great Military Headquarters, one can see the heroism of the Romanians. We intend to integrate the local history along the Prahova valley with the reality of the Great war at national and international level. The local heroism is illustrated by the examples offered by the sacrifice of the soldiers of Comarnic (a town situated along the Prahova valley), who fought in the most important battles of the war. At the same time, we intend to show the impact of the German military occupation upon the civilian population by giving examples of the destruction recorded in the towns along the Prahova valley. The evocation of the local history leads to cultivating national feeling, almost one century since the fulfilment of the unitary Romanian state. Key words: Romania, Romanian Army, Prahova Valley, Comarnic. The beginning of the First World War found Romania in a delicate situation. Since 1883, King Carol I had already secretly signed an alliance with Germany and Austro-Hungary. This alliance was the cause of many disputes between politicians because of Austro-Hungary holding the Romanian territories of Transylvania and Bucovina.
