From Fr. Mike’s Desk We live in a world where many are used and manipulated for the gain of the few. Pope Francis talked about this on his recent trip to Madagascar where 70 percent of the population lives on less than $2 a day. In today’s first reading we hear the words of Amos – a great prophet of the Old Testament. He lived at an interesting time when wealthy businesspeople amassed riches by ruthlessly exploit- Roman Catholic Church of St. Simon Stock & St. Joseph ing and cheating the poor and defenseless. Fraud and swindling were common practices. The courts showed greater concern for the 2191 Valentine Ave., Bronx, NY 10457 vested interests of the commercial classes rather than for justice. This may sound like today, but these were the kind of moral standards that prevailed in Israel during the time www.saintsimonstockchurch.org of the prophet Amos, almost 3,000 years ago. Then in our Gospel today we hear from Jesus himself. What did Jesus mean when he said "we cannot give ourselves to God and money"? What is the message of this parable of the "dishonest steward" that we have in today's Gospel? Well, Jesus warns that misuse of money can separate us from God. We cannot be the servants both of God and of money. It seems that Jesus was well aware that the "drive" we have for money can influence our relationship with God. In other words, the person whose main goal in life is a bigger bankroll will have little time for prayer and probably a small inclination to Christian charity. Our quest for money can become so strong that we can become slaves of it. Jesus knew this and I think we all know this if we just think about it. I think it is important to understand that despite the many strong statements Jesus made regarding money and the gaining of material wealth, Jesus never said that money in itself is evil. Nor is it the "root of all evils" as many people, misquoting Scripture say. 1 Timo- thy 6:10 makes it real clear. It states: “For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil”. So, it’s the priority we give to money that makes it sinful. Money honestly earned represents the work a person has performed to get it, and there is nothing evil about work. Just as important, it represents the good a person can do if it is put to proper use. Money is the means people use to purchase the roof that covers their heads, the bread they put on their table, the schooling they buy for their children. Without money we could not survive in the world. So, having money is not evil. Loving money and making the attainment of money our primary goal in life is! Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Next weekend there will be a Second Collection to support St Joseph Seminary. The seminary system of the Archdiocese of NY and the surrounding dioceses keeps on educating and preparing young men who will serve as priests in the Archdiocese.
