This newsle er will be issued The Ibbankatuwa Megalithic Burial Site was opened for public viewing under the every six months by the patronage of Hon. Chandrarathna By the last quarter of 2015, a cluster of burials was subject to excava on within the Language Editors legal archaeological framework and the final report of its findings is in the process of Sirinimal Lakdusinghe Malani Dias being compiled. Ibbankatuwa Megalithic archaeological site, which was in a state of Danaranjani Danapala ruin has now in its conserved state being instrumental in contribu ng to the upli ment of the pastoral economy and to the genera on of economically Designer developed environment resul ng in the growth of the gross domes c product of the Jayampath Senanayaka region. The lesson on Ibbankatuwa appearing in the grade 10 text book would Coordinator rela vely impart to school children, an educa onal background of the site to enable Anoma Pubuduni Herath them to view it with added interest. As the first stage, on 11th February 2017 Hon. Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, the Minister of Educa on ini ated the move from the Sigiriya Project.
The main objec ve of this exercise is to enable tourists to purchase their ckets with the least inconvenience to them. Consequently, both local and foreign tourists could purchase their ckets valid for three months from the date of purchase through the Internet. With the incorpora on of the latest technology in sites of cultural interest, foreigners intending to visit the site now could purchase their ckets online prior to their arrival in the country. The Informa on and Communica on Technology Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA) has been kind enough to give the technical assistance and funding in this regard.
The conserva on of the mural pain ngs of the Dambulla Rajamahavihara 3 The conserva on of the Dambulla Rajamahavihara wall pain ngs was commenced by the Central Cultural Fund on the 11th of February 2017 under the patronage of Hon. Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, Minister of Educa on.
This project is executed as a joint venture by the Central Cultural Fund and the Archaeological Department. The Hon, Minister and the gathering who par cipated at this event were made aware of the project component by the Director General of the Central Cultural Fund, Dr. Senerath Dissanayaka, the former Director General of the Department of Archaeology and by Prof. Jagath Weerasinghe, the Director of the Postgraduate Ins tute of Archaeology. This venture was accomplished by the Central Cultural Fund under the direc ve of the Director General of the Central Cultural Fund, Prof. Prishanta Gunawardena on the advice of the Minister of Educa on Hon. Akila Viraj Karuiyawasam and as suggested by the Prime Minister, Hon. Ranil Wickremesinghe. The Prime Minister, Hon. Ranil Wickremesinghe graced the occasion as the chief guest, and a number of Ministers and MPs were in a endance. The Mahavamsa could be iden fied as the premiere historical document, which could be used to research the history of Sri Lanka. It is the source where the informa on regarding the advent of Vijaya, the tenure of the kings who ruled the country and the advent of the Thera Mahinda could be found.

For the commemora on of the comple on of His Excellency the President's second year in office, the Matara Project of the Central Cultural Fund commenced the conserva on of the residence of the monks of the Veheragalla Samudragiri Temple in Mirissa. Under the leadership of Assistant Director of the Central Cultural Fund, Mr. Dias Wagachchi and the ini a ve of Mr. Manoj Samarasinghe, the Field Officer in Charge, the inaugural ceremony was performed. The Image House and the wall pain ngs of the historically and archaeologically important Veheragalla Samudragiri Temple date back to the low country style of the Kandyan period.

The second death anniversary of Prof. Senake Bandaranayake acclaimed special in the field of Archaeology fell on 2nd of March 2017. He being a former Director General of the Central Fund, Project Director of Central Cultural Fund, Sigiriya Project and the Founder of the Post Graduate Ins tute of Archaeology has performed yeoman service to Archaeology. Concurrent to the commemora on ceremony, a programme was conducted on the 2nd of March 2017 by the Central Cultural Fund at the Post Graduate Ins tute of Archaeology. The aim of this workshop was to formulate a methodology to be abided by all media personnel a ached to the project offices and the Project Managers in the dissemina on of ins tu onal news. In this regard the Chairman of the Press Council Mr. Koggala Wellala Bandula, Prof. Rohana Lakshman Piyadasa, Head of the Department in Mass Media Communica on of the Kelaniya University and Mr. Mangala Kirth de Pasqual, Assistant Lecturer of the Department in Mass Media Communica on of the Kelaniya University were the resource personnel. All media personnel a ached to the project offices and the Project Managers of the Central Cultural Fund took part.
Evidence in abundance regarding the ancient Port City of Trincomalee 13
Archaeologists of the Central Cultural Fund conducted a very successful explora on of the area surrounding the old port of Trincomalee. They were able to collect evidence in abundance to reveal that the lucra ve ancient Gokanna Ti ha or the Port existed in this region. It is men oned in the legends and historical sources that ports existed in the West and the East coasts of this island. According to the legends and the chronicle Mahavamsa, a principal port known as Gakanna Ti ha is said to have existed on the Eastern coastal belt. During the surface explora ons conducted in and around the Mc Heyzer Stadium and its environment yielded a mass of potsherds, beads and ar facts of foreign origin.
A host of ancient ar facts from the precinct of the Mahatalakolaweva Rajamahavihara 14
A number of archaeological ar facts belonging to the 1st century AD has been discovered from a scien fic excava on conducted centering the Image House of the Ancient Mahatalakola weva Rajamahavihara in Medirigiriya. Among the large quan ty of ar facts collected are a headless Buddha Image, a rock with Buddha's Footprint, a flower alter, iron slag, iron nails and ceramic pieces of foreign origin. The potsherds discovered here belonged to the 1st c. BC while ceramic sherds belonged to the 8th and the 9th centuries of the AD.
7 This newsle er will be issued every six months by the Central Cultural Fund Commencement of the KandMass of Historical facts about Ruvy Medaanveliw Stupaasala f reor Public Exposition vealed 15 8 Central Cultural Fund in an archaeological excava on conducted close to the right side of the Eastern Entrance of the Ruvanveli Stupa had revealed a host of historical evidence. In the excava on done up to a meter in depth from the exis ng floor, the ruins of a structure had been discovered and research is presently in progress to determine the structure. Further a stone lavatory pan, mortar plaster, two dwarf images, a plain moon stone, two guard stones stone, two stone balusters and a blue coloured wall foo ng fabricated using a mixture of anthill clay, slaked lime and brick powder. Research is presently being conducted to confirm the findings.

The conserva on of the wall pain ngs of this temple commenced in February 2016 and was completed by February 2017. The decayed ceiling mber was removed and resurfaced with the pain ngs in the refurbished area redone. Filling and remoulding the damaged sec ons of the dragon arch and the guard images, repain ng the surface of the wall pain ngs that had been discoloured due to sun bleaching, rebuilding the images within the temple that were defiled and repain ng them to its original state had been accomplished.
Copying the inscrip ons and the symbols of the Jetavana Project 17
Concurrent to the research being conducted by the Excava ons and Research sec on of the Jetavana Project, the inscrip ons and the symbols discovered on the stone terrace of the Jetavana Stupa are in the process of being copied by them. The symbols and inscrip ons found on the surface of the rock slabs of the Stone Terrace could be iden fied. These symbols and inscrip ons had been etched at different mes in history. As the symbols and inscrip ons found on the South Western quarter of the Stupa had yet not being subject to any form of formal research and it is an cipated to study them only a er the copying process is completed. In this connec on the third year undergraduates of the Peradeniya Archaeology Study sec on together with the trainee Research Officers under the direc on of the Director of Archaeology Dr. Piya ssa Senanayaka and the Chief Research Officer Mr. Nalin Vishwanath were primarily involved in the task.

The seminar was held to include 5 more Archaeological Heritage sites other than Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Sigiriya, Kandy, the Galle Fort, and the Rangiri Dambulla Temple which are already in the list. The seminar was held under the patronage of Mr. Asoka Siriwardhana, Addi onal Secretary of the Ministry of Educa on and of Prof Prishanta Gunawardhana, Director General of the Central Cultural Fund. Architect Jaya ssa Herath Chairman of the Conven on for the Protec on of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, an affiliate of UNESCO, Architect Dr.Nalin Cooray Assistant Director of the Central Cultural Fund, Architect Prasanna Ratnayake Assistant Director General of the Department of Archaeology and Prof. S Pathmanathan delivered lectures at this seminar.
A Tourist Promo on in Monaragala 19 The founda on stone was laid on 23rd February 2017 on the Buduruwagala Project site for a Tourist Promo on layout. Buduruwagala, Maligawila and Udaganawa archaeological sectors belong to this tourist zone. This is christened as the Monaragala Triangle. This act of conserva on of the cultural heritage of the Monaragala district, an endowment to the progeny was inaugurated under the patronage of the Minister of Educa on, Hon. Akila Viraj Kariyawasam in associa on of Minister of Public Administra on and Management Hon. Ranjit Madduma Bandara and Hon. Ananda Kumarasiri M.P.
9 This newsle er will be issued every six months by the Central Cultural Fund Commencement of the KandSiva Hindu Temple No. 02 in Polonnaruwy Medawasala fa Excavor Public Exposition a on Site 20 8 The phase II of exposing of the parapet surrounding the Siva Temple No. 2 commenced on 1st March 2017. In phase I of the excava on conducted last year to expose the parapet using the trench method, the area was divided in to 4mx4m grids before the excava on took place. Accordingly, in order to con nue forward from the earlier work, the excava on commenced this year as well. According to the grid plan, excava ons were con nuing in the V and the W trenches to a depth of 20cm below the surface earth strata on its right side of incident No.1. From the excava ons done so far, few potsherds, 42 beads, 33 terraco a beads, 9 glass beads, 3 bangle pieces, 2 coins, 2 ring pieces and 2 terraco a lamps including a large quan ty of ar facts had been discovered. This led to the labeling of the special earthen implements and other ar facts and deposi ng them in the excava on sec on. Accordingly, by the end of March 2017 excava ons in 4 grids have been completed.
Buddha Rashmi 2017 21
Concurrent to the UN Interna onal Vesak day celebra on, a pre- arranged exposi on of Buddha's Relics and some Buddhist cra s were held at the Araliyagaha Mandiraya (Temple Trees) for three days commencing on the 10th of May 2017. This Buddha Rashmi zone was organized focusing the Hunupi ya Gangaramaya Temple with the associa on of the Archaeological Department and the Prime Minister's office. To coincide with the interna onal Vesak celebra ons, the Central Cultural Fund launched an academic publica on tled, 'Buddha Rashmi Vesak Volume' (Essays in Buddhism and Monas c Archaeology) edited by Prof. Prishanta Gunawardhana, the Director General of the Central Cultural Fund, Prof. Robin Cunningham and Prof. K. Krishnan Namiputhir was presented to the Prime Minister Hon. Ranil Wickremesinghe. This volume contains ar cles wri en by Professors in universi es in Sri Lanka and abroad having a specialized knowledge on host of subjects including Buddhist Monas c archaeology, management of cultural resources, museology, history of art etc. The academic ar cles in this volume also delve in to the analysis of fields such as the Buddhist philosophy, Buddhist Monas c archaeology, Buddhist cultural history and indigenous medicinal prac ces.
This newsle er will be issued every six months by the Central Cultural Fund 10 Commencement of the KandThe Excava on of the Asanaghary Medaa of Yawtalaasala f Stupaor Public Exposition 22 8 The excava on of the ground below the Asanaghara in Yatala Stupa that was commenced in May 2016 by the Tissamaharama Project is in its final stages. By April 2017 the state of the Yatala Stupa excava on and the ar facts discovered by the excava on could be displayed. In early stages of the Asanaghara ground excava on of Yatala Stupa, the area represen ng Trench B yd Extension G I Trench II yielded a brick layer with ancient mortar. While excava ng further near this brick layer at a depth if 12cm below it, a brick wall with 5 layers of brick work was iden fied. In this excava on a structure independent of the main structure that had already been exposed for which the excava on was performed has revealed another structure located within it. Evidence to support is evinced from the discovery of pieces of les at this spot. In addi on, ar facts such as potsherds, iron slag and lime mortar pieces had been discovered. While excava ng Extension I Trench, a ramp had been le undisturbed to facilitate the removal of the excavated soil. However, this month the ramp too was excavated and it revealed that this layer of soil had been disturbed. In it scraps of polythene, over burnt brick bats and plas c pieces were found confirming how disturbed the soil layer was.

The commemora on of the Interna onal Museum Day was held in the Polonnaruwa Museum on 18th May 2017. It was held under the leadership of the former Director of Museums and Consultant to the Central Cultural Fund on museums, Dr. Sirinimal Lakdusinghe. Concurrent to this event, a workshop in modernizing of museums was organized on the 16th and 17th instant. In this regard Keepers of the Museums in Jaffna and Matara, which are in the process of being constructed and the Keepers of Museums of Jetavana, Abhayagiriya and Galle and their respec ve project managers par cipated in the event.

Akila Viraj Kariyawasam. Concurrent to this, it is intended to commence two projects centered on the Districts of Ampara and Ba caloa regarding the protec on of Archaeological Sites and Monuments. Accordingly, a novel programme for the Protec on of the Cultural Heritage has been formulated with the an cipated outcome of tourism promo on.
The Second Phase of Providing Electric Ligh ng to the Old Polonnaruwa Town 25
Under the patronage of the Minister of Educa on Hon. Akila Viraj Kariyawasam and on the advice of the Prime Minister Hon. Ranil Wickremesinghe His Excellency the President Maithripala Sirisena declared open the second phase of the illumina on of the Old Polonnaruwa Town including the Galvihara Temple. Here street lamps had been installed from the Stone Bridge in Polonnaruwa up to the curve at the Galvihara Temple for the ligh ng up of both sides of the entrance and the exit portals. Rs. 8.9 million was spent on the project In the first phase of the project, the areas of the car park at the Galvihara Temple, Kirivehera Stupa and the Temple of the Tooth were illuminated and in the third phase, the archaeological sites of Potgul Vehera, Premises of the King's Palace, Alahana Pirivena, Rankot vehera Stupa and the Tivanka Image House would be illuminated.. This work is being done for the convenience of the local pilgrims and the foreign tourists.
Foreign Training of the Excava on Officers of the Central Cultural Fund 26
Excava on Officers of the Central Cultural Fund had an opportunity of being associated with the excava on, carried out in Nepal jointly by the Durham University in UK and the Department of Archaeology of Nepal. Accordingly the five officers worked from 2017. 02. 07 to 2016. 02. 19. in the Nepal excava on project in Kapilavastu. Kapilavastu, at present known as Tilaurakot was known during the Buddha's me as Kimbulvat Nuvara. The students of History, Culture and Archaeology of the Thribhuvan Post Graduate University are ac vely involved at present with the excava ons done since 2013 by the Department of Archaeology of Nepal under the UNESCO Lumbini Development Trust and the Durham University in UK.
