Dr. Johnny Hunt

Johnny Hunt, is pastor, author and Senior Vice President of Evangelism and Leadership for the North American Mission Board. He served for forty-three years as Senior Pastor of churches in North Carolina and Georgia. His most recent pastorate was for thirty-three years at First Baptist Church Woodstock, Georgia. Pastor Johnny previously served as President of the Southern Baptist Convention from 2008- 2010.

He was born in Lumberton, North Carolina, and is a member of the Lumbee Native American Indian tribe based in North Carolina.

Pastor Johnny graduated from Gardner-Webb College, Boiling Springs, North Carolina in 1979 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Religion. He earned his Master of Divinity Degree from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, Wake Forest, North Carolina, in 1981. He received an honorary Doctor of Divinity from Immanuel Baptist Theological Seminary of Sharpsburg, Georgia, and also Doctor of Sacred Laws and Letters from Covington Theological Seminary. He also received an honorary Doctor of Divinity at Tennessee Temple University as well as an honorary Doctor of Letters from Louisiana Baptist University and Seminary.

In his role at the North American Mission Board, he leads a team focused on championing the cause of evangelism among Southern Baptist churches and pastors. The team also equips pastors with tools and leadership skills that will allow them to lead their churches to become more evangelistically active.

Pastor Johnny is married to Janet Allen Hunt of Wilmington, North Carolina. They have two daughters: Deanna Hunt Carswell and Hollie Hunt Hixson. They also have three granddaughters: Katie Hunter Carswell, Hope Hixson, Addie Hixson and one grandson, Carson John Carswell.
