  • Preliminary Advocacy Strategies 2020 Election Wrap-Up
PRELIMINARY ADVOCACY STRATEGIES 2020 ELECTION WRAP-UP The 2020 General Election turned out to be a big surprise compared to the publicly available polling and predictions by both major political parties in the weeks leading up to the election. Iowa was in the spotlight with the election predicted to be competitive at the presidential level, but also for the U.S. Senate race and three out the state’s four congressional districts. The Iowa House of Representatives was also a major target for Democrats looking to break the Republican trifecta in the Statehouse. Overall, Republicans in Iowa far exceeded their own predictions riding a President Trump win in the state. Below is a preliminary outline of results in Iowa and nationally; please note these are not final, certified results. PRESIDENT The race for President of the United States has yet to be decided with incumbent Republican President Trump overperforming the public predictions for Southern and Sun Belt States and Former Democratic Vice President Joe Biden performing well in the Rust Belt and Northern states. States yet to be called by all outlets include Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Georgia, Arizona, and Nevada. There are likely going to be challenges to the results and recount efforts will likely be requested in the coming days and weeks. In Iowa, President Trump was declared the winner with 53% of the vote compared to Vice President Biden’s 45%. This is nearly in line with President Trump’s 9% win in Iowa in 2016. U.S. SENATE Iowa’s U.S. Senate race was in the national spotlight as it could help determine whether Republicans or Democrats controlled the chamber.

  • 2020 Election Recap
2020 ELECTION RESULTS Last night was a much-anticipated evening of elections, impacting the control of many aspects of state and federal government from the White House to individual state legislative races. Below we have provided a summary of the state and federal elections, while highlighting some of the closer statehouse races. Later in November or early December, committee assignments will be finalized, including committee chairs/ranking members. Look for more information from us as those are announced. The Iowa Legislature will convene on Monday, January 11. CUPAC ENGAGEMENT It was a good night for credit union supported candidates. CUPAC actively engaged in 77 legislative races across the state, with 89 percent (58 of 65) of House candidates and 92 percent (11 of 12) of Senate candidates supported by the Credit Union Political Action Committee (CUPAC) winning their elections. In addition to the state legislature, the Iowa Credit Union League (ICUL) was engaged in our congressional elections, with two of the three candidates we supported (Senator Joni Ernst and Congresswoman Cindy Axne) winning. Congresswoman Finkenauer was the third ICUL- supported federal candidate, she lost to State Representative Ashley Hinson. PRESIDENTIAL As of this morning, there is not a declared winner in the election for President of the United States. Several states remain too close to call and neither candidate has secured the 270 Electoral College votes needed to win. President Trump won Iowa’s 6 electoral votes, 53-45%. 7745 Office Plaza Drive North, Suite 170, West Des Moines, IA 50266 | P: 866.518.0209 | F: 515.221.3010 | 7745 Office Plaza Drive North, Suite 170, West Des Moines, IA 50266 | P: 866.518.0209 | policyworksiowa.com FEDERAL It appears Democrats will retain control of the U.S.
