  • “When in Doubt, Write a Hymn.” the Award-Winning Singer-Songwriter
“When in doubt, write a hymn.” The award-winning singer-songwriter Marcus Hummon and his wife, Episcopal priest and founder of Thistle Farms, Becca Stevens, have written a wonderful book of reflections on Marcus’ cantata The Passion. Marcus and Becca look at the creative process of composing – especially a sacred text – and the scripture passages chosen to make up the cantata. Their reflections form a strong foundation for our own Holy Week prayer – and move us toward the joy of Easter with the final cut, “A New Song.” Commissioned by Christ Church Cathedral in Nashville, the score and a CD or mp3 recorded in Nashville are all available from Church Publishing. Here’s a bit of what Marcus has to say about the commission and his writing process. When I was commissioned by Christ Church Cathedral here in Nashville to write a cantata reflecting the last days of Jesus’s life, I wasn’t sure how to begin. First of all, my background is not in sacred music, but rather in popular country music. It just happens that while writing songs for the Dixie Chicks, Tim McGraw, Rascal Flatts, and others, I had started to dabble in writing music for the theater. As I wasn’t classically trained, I would need help from a friend of mine, David John Madore at the Hartt Conservatory of Music in Hartford, Connecticut, in transcribing the choral work I was arranging, and my friend Dr. Deen Entzminger and the Belmont Chamber Singers to bring the work to fruition, to full performance. I also asked Jonathan Yudkin to add his beautiful cello accompaniment.

When they then told me that the amp was going to sell for the price of an effects pedal, it gave me an acute attack of what I now recognise as the Blackstar ‘Wow’ effect .

  • Rascal Flatts Debut 'Back to Life,' Experiment with Singles-Only Business Model: Lyric Video Premiere
(09.28.18) - https://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/country/8477320/rascal-flatts-back- to-life-lyric-video Rascal Flatts Debut 'Back to Life,' Experiment With Singles-Only Business Model: Lyric Video Premiere For the members of Rascal Flatts, new single “Back to Life” doesn’t just contain a winning formula for a hit; the midtempo ballad is also a sweet testament to the women in their lives. Lead singer Gary LeVox says the Big Machine Records trio was initially drawn to the song -- written by Cary Barlowe, Niko Moon, Dan + Shay’s Shay Mooney and Fred Wilhelm -- because of a melody he calls “so infectious” that’s also reminiscent of some of the band’s previous hits. “We’ve had such great success with those 6/8 waltzes in the past,” he says, such as “Easy” and “Come Wake Me Up.” Additionally, “We thought that melody on the B section going into the chorus was so different, and we just really, really loved it and thought it would be a great song for the end of the summer.” The track went to country radio Friday (Sept. 28). Billboard premieres the lyric video below: The lyrics also resonated with LeVox and bandmates Jay DeMarcus and Joe Don Rooney, all happily married. With lines like “Taking my hand, pulling me up when I’m going under” and “I don’t want to think about where I would be without her,” LeVox says, “That’s how we look at our wives, as just being the anchors, and our moms. They’re the ones that keep us from going under half the time.” Adds DeMarcus, who produced the single along with his bandmates, “It’s a pretty empowering song for women to let them know how much power they really have when it comes to being a support system for their husbands, and how much life they can bring to us whenever we’re going through dark times.” After 10 albums, Rascal Flatts are trying out a new, singles-based business model, which means that while “Back to Life” is a brand-new song, it’s not necessarily the lead single from a forthcoming album.
