Medical Specialists and Facilities Updated April 2017 Please note that some, but not all of these providers have been reviewed by the Embassy’s medical unit. The American Citizen Services Unit welcomes comments, both positive and negative, about any of the providers listed herein, and also welcomes corrections regarding any of the contact information provided herein. This list is not intended to be comprehensive--there are many excellent providers not included in this list. Names are listed according to specialty alphabetically, and the order in which they appear has no other significance. The information in the list on professional credentials and areas of expertise are provided directly by the medical professional, medical facility or air ambulance service; the Embassy is not in a position to vouch for such information. You may receive additional information about the individuals and facilities on the list by contacting local medical boards and associations (or its equivalent) or local licensing authorities. The quality of medical care in India varies considerably. Medical care in the major population centers approaches and occasionally meets Western standards, but adequate medical care is usually very limited or unavailable in rural areas. The different types of services provided in India are: Private Hospitals and private doctors/clinics Government Hospitals (free care)—these might be central government, state government, or focused on particular categories of people and not the general public (i.e., railway employees, Central Government employees or ESI hospitals). Government Medical Colleges/Research Hospitals (government run; free care) Primary Health Care Centers (urban and rural) Government Nursing/Maternity Homes (urban health centers focused on ante-natal care, post-natal care, and deliveries) Central Government Health Schemes in India is a comprehensive health care to CGHS beneficiaries (free of cost care). Primary Health Care Sub-Centers (these are mini PHCs) and Municipal Corporation Health Posts (staffed by a nurse, they do ante-natal checkups and immunizations) Community Health Workers (attached to PHCs, also called “ASHAs”). Anganwadis (Integrated Child Development Services=ICDS)—these small centers provide education, nutrition, some health services to small children and their mothers. This is a huge program with a small health component. This list includes providers only in the New Delhi Consular District. The New Delhi Consular District includes Delhi, and the states of Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir and Bhutan. Separate doctor lists for other areas in India are maintained by the U.S. Consulates in Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Hyderabad respectively. ARESH TREHA CHAIRMAN & MANAGING DIRECTOR MEDANTA- THE MEDICITY After training in general surgery and subsequently cardiac surgery at premier institutions in U.S. (NYU Medical Centre), held important academic and clinical positions at the New York University Medical Center, Bellevue Hospital of the city of New York and Veterans Administration Hospital (Manhattan), U.S.A. His pioneering work in the field of coronary artery bypass surgery was at the New York University Medical Centre, New York, USA. In 1988, despite a successful career in United States he returned to India and started Escorts Heart Institute and Research Centre - a pioneering state-of-the-art heart institute in India. Within a short period this Centre became an important land mark the world over in cardiac surgery and cardiology having successfully performed over 48,000 open heart surgeries which includes surgeries of coronary artery, valves, carotid arteries, aortic aneurysm, cardiomyoplasty, cardiac arrhythmias, myocardial total arterial revascularization, transmyocardial laser revascularisation, least invasive coronary artery surgery on a beating heart, reduction ventriculoplasty (Batista Operation), heart port access surgery and robotically assisted cardiac surgery with excellent results. Some of these operations have been performed by Dr. Trehan for the first time in India. Dr Trehan left Escorts in 2007 to give shape to his dream project Medanta - The Medicity, a multi super-specialty hospital located in Delhi’s NCR region, Gurgaon. Spread over 45 acres, Medanta is a 1500 bed hospital with 45 operating theatres which will cater to over 20 super- specialties. Medanta aims to match the standards of clinical care, research and education offered by the likes of Mayo/Harvard and Cleveland Clinics, while making treatments affordable.
