Substance Use Disorder Hotline Available in Washington County Natalie Boomer [email protected] A phone line support system for Washington County has been created by AMHC. AMHC is a non-profit, private community health and social service organization. With operations serving Aroostook, Hancock, and Washington Counties, AMHC offers mobile crisis response and stabilization, outpatient, case management, behavioral health home rehabilitation, supportive visitation, residential, peer support, and educational services. These services are available to those who (Photo by Cindy Joyce) seek mental health, substance use, and brain injury treatment and needs. The organization’s new hotline offers over the phone support to those who are dealing with substance use disorder. “This service was developed due to Washington County having the highest rate of OD in the State,” said Michelle Ferris, LCSW, Program Director of Emergency Services. The line is staffed 24/7 by recovery coaches. These coaches are fully trained to help those with substance use disorder themselves, those who are concerned about someone with substance use disorder, or anyone in the community looking for resources that are available for substance use disorder support, intervention, treatment, medical emergency personnel, law enforcement, academic and educational staff, and public officials. “It has been live since mid-August with very little utilization so we want people to know it is available,” said Ferris. Coaches are ready and able to help by giving examples of re- sources such as counseling, peer recovery centers, recovery coaches, medication-assisted treatment, 12-step programs, residential, Narcan kits and training, syringe exchange, and more. Along with helpful resource advice, coaches will also listen, of- fer support, assess for safety, and help the caller make a plan based on their needs. According to Ferris, the service was developed to coordinate services for substance use disorder, to bridge gaps in services, and to establish a “coordinating telephone system based in Washington County.” (Photo by Donna Melanson) (Photo by Cecilia Stillings) For help call 1-833-687-4887, (833-NVR-GVUP).
