SNOW PATROL BIOGRAPHY A few reasons why Snow Patrol are one of the biggest and boldest bands of the past decade: over 15 years, the part Irish, part Scottish five piece have transformed from cultish indie wannabes into a stadium-packing tour de force. They have shifted over ten million albums worldwide and been nominated for Grammys and Brits; scooped Meteors and Ivor Novello Album Awards. At the heart of the band is Gary Lightbody, Snow Patrol‟s frontman and songwriter-in-chief. Over five studio albums, the 33 year-old has sketched heart-bruised laments and arm-around-your-best-mate festival anthems; radio hits and moments of painful introspection. All of these have been gathered together for Up To Now - a double album of 30 singles, cover versions and album tracks. “It‟s a bit like photo album,” says Lightbody. “It‟s a documentation of how the band got to where it is now. We‟ve been working hard for 15 years – it wasn‟t something that happened overnight. We wanted to give people as honest an account of us as a band over the last five albums, warts and all. Yeah, we‟re being selectively honest and we might be covering over some of the cracks, but this collection really feels like an honest portrait of us as a band. “At first we got it down to 40 songs but knew it had to be leaner than that and had a little trouble cutting some things we really liked out. But we got it down to 30 in the end. -

In 2008 UNESCO awarded Glasgow the title of ‘City of Music’ and the application dossier submitted in support of this title noted the importance of rock and pop for the city’s musical reputation. Since the late 1970s a large number of bands have emerged from (or been associated with) the city, yet little academic research has been carried out to determine the factors behind this phenomenon. -

Clear Channel owns radio and television stations and billboards. The combined company is to be called Clear Channel Communications, and it will be the world's largest out-of-home media enti- ty ("out-of-home" primarily referring to radio stations and billboards.) The stock swap is valued at $56 billion. Because of certain regulatory limitations in the Telecommunications Act of 1996, Clear Channel and AMFM are expected to unload 125 stations. After this divestiture, the combined assets of Clear Channel and AMFM will give the new company apresence in 32 countries with 830 radio stations in 187 markets; stakes in more than 240 radio stations outside the U.S.; 425,000 bill- boards; and 19 television stations affiliated with Fox, UPN, ABC, NBC and CBS. Lowry Mays, Chairman and CEO of Clear Channel, will retain that position after the merger. All copies have gone, and they went quickly. On the strength of this, the editors haven‟t doubled the print-run or negotiated till-point distribution rights with the publishers of Hello, but we have decided to keep on with the documentation of pleasurable and/or thought-provoking things. In this issue that means sounds: the melodic but lyrically surprising band Belle and Sebastian; Fred Hunter‟s account of recording activities in the 1960s (with its strong connections to the world of Migrant, discussed in our first issue), and the strange Latinate textures of Joseph Macleod. There is a curious gap in this – a piece on sound poetry itself, and so, for a later issue, the invitation goes out for a piece perhaps recounting a history of sound poetry in England, Wales, and Scotland since the 60s, or, perhaps more challenging, a piece on where sound poetry is now.
