The Boston Red Sox Tuesday, December 1, 2020 * The Boston Globe MLB Draft League launching wooden-bat league for top draft prospects Matthew Doherty Major League Baseball is launching a wooden-bat league for top prospects who are eligible for the MLB Draft, it announced Monday. The MLB Draft League, which will be operated by the scouting service Prep Baseball Report, has five member teams and is discussing adding a sixth team in the coming weeks. Teams will play a 68-game regular season from late May to mid-August, split into two parts. The first half of the season will showcase the draft-eligible high school, college, and junior college players. After an All-Star break centered around the MLB Draft (July 11-13), teams will restock their rosters with the top undrafted players for the second half of the season. Paul Toboni, the Director of Amateur Scouting for the Red Sox, said he’s unsure whether top prospects will choose to play in the MLB Draft League. The pandemic’s effect on the spring season will also play a factor, according to Toboni. “I think it’s too early to tell,” said Toboni. “It’s tough to predict the caliber of prospect that will choose to play in this league. And I’m stating the obvious here, but how the pandemic affects spring seasons will ultimately have an impact on prospects’ willingness to play as well.” The college baseball regular season ends in mid-May and the College World Series is scheduled from June 19 - June 30 this season.

The Boston Red Sox Wednesday, May 19, 2021 * The Boston Globe Blue Jays batter Red Sox in meeting of early AL East leaders Julian McWilliams Tuesday initiated the start of a series between two of baseball’s most prolific offenses, two separated by 1½ games atop the American League East. The Red Sox had a best-in-baseball .772 OPS. The Blue Jays, meanwhile, were tied for the second-most homers in baseball despite big offseason acquisition George Springer playing in just four games this year. “It’s a challenge,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said before the game. “And we’re up to the challenge. We feel we have a good team.” At least on Tuesday they weren’t, bludgeoned by the Blue Jays, 8-0, in Dunedin, Fla. The bottom of the fourth inning decided the fates of Eduardo Rodriguez and his team. With the Sox trailing, 1-0, after a Danny Jansen RBI single in the second, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. cracked a full-count double to lead off the fourth. Rodriguez retired the next two hitters, but Jansen negotiated a walk to bring up Marcus Semien, who fisted an RBI single of his own to right field. Sox right fielder Hunter Renfroe, attempting to cut down Jansen, made an off-target and ill-advised throw to third. It sailed far to Rafael Devers’s right, allowing Jansen to score. Bo Bichette then stung an RBI double that stretched the lead to 4-0. Gurriel Jr. made it 5-0 in the fifth, singling after a Teoscar Hernández double, and Hernández made it 6-0 in the sixth, singling after a two-out walk to Bichette and a line-drive single by Vlad Guerrero Jr.

The Boston Red Sox Tuesday, May 4, 2021 * The Boston Globe Health has played critical role in hot Red Sox start Alex Speier While a tumble in Texas brought the first-place Red Sox back toward the AL East pack, in at least one respect, the team continues to enjoy a runaway advantage. One underappreciated aspect of the strong start is health. Outside of J.D. Martinez’s one day on the COVID-19 injury list, the team has had just three players on the IL since the start of this season: Chris Sale continues his rehab from his March 2020 Tommy John surgery, Ryan Brasier remains in Fort Myers to rehab his injured calf, and Eduardo Rodriguez missed one turn of the rotation due to dead arm at the start of the year. Entering Monday, the Sox had lost 71 player days to the non-COVID injured list, fifth fewest in the majors. Sale, of course, was never expected to be ready for the start of the season. Rodriguez missed one start. Only Brasier has required the team to reconfigure its roster for an extended period. In that regard, the Red Sox are atypical. They and Cleveland are the only teams not to have an injury since Opening Day that required a placement on the injured list. The other AL East contenders, meanwhile, have been hammered by injuries, contributing to their stumbles out of the gate. The Yankees have had seven players placed on the non-COVID injured list since the start of spring training, including surgeries on Zack Britton (shoulder) and Luke Voit (knee).
