Red Pine Scholars Program – Student Handbook – 2016-2017 ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The Red Pine Scholars Program welcomes its fifth class of Scholars from across Massachusetts, who have demonstrated academic excellence and are attending competitive colleges as freshmen in the fall of 2016. This program is designed to support students through tuition assistance, mentoring, and other flexible financial supports. The Red Pine Scholars Program is dedicated to making college affordable for Massachusetts families and helping students to reach their full potential. The program is funded by an anonymous donor and administered by The Philanthropic Initiative (TPI). Each Red Pine Scholar is paired with a Red Pine Advisor, who provides support, guidance, and facilitates access to available resources.

In the 2016-17 school year:  113 Red Pine Scholars will attend college o 26 as freshman o 30 as sophomores o 28 as juniors o 29 as seniors

 Scholars come from 56 cities & towns across Massachusetts

OBJECTIVES OF THE RED PINE SCHOLARS PROGRAM

 To help make college affordable, leaving Scholars with a reasonable loan burden upon graduation.  To help Scholars achieve academic success.  To help Scholars reach their full potential and go on to be successful and highly productive members of society.  To create a network of Scholars who encourage and support one another.  To support Scholars in finding meaningful summer experiences, internships, and/or work opportunities.  To prepare Scholars for careers post-graduation and/or graduate school.  To encourage Scholars to participate in their campus and community.  To encourage a positive identification and pride in being a Red Pine Scholar.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Students are selected for the Red Pine Scholars Program based on the following criteria:

 Strong academic record or demonstration of significant improvement over time  Ability and motivation to achieve in college  Involved in a balance of community, school, and work activities  Demonstrated financial need  Senior at an accredited high school in Massachusetts  Planning to enroll at a competitive four year college or university

Red Pine Scholars Program – Student Handbook – 2016-2017 2 SCHOLAR RESPONSIBILITIES and EXPECTATIONS

 Maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA.

 Consistent contact with Red Pine Advisor – minimum of one check-in per month.

 Make every effort to attend Red Pine Scholars Program events. o When receiving event invitations, we expect Scholars to respond to indicate whether they can or cannot attend.

 Actively pursue productive summer experiences (can be a combination of work, internships, volunteering, classes, etc.).

 Timely submission of all program materials: o Transcripts o Renewal Application o Other forms as requested

 Inform the Red Pine Scholars Program of any changes in your contact info (email Ali and update your online scholarship account). o This includes your email, phone number, address at school, address at home.

 Give back/volunteer.

 Respond in a timely manner to emails and correspondence from Red Pine Advisors and TPI staff.

Red Pine Scholars Program – Student Handbook – 2016-2017 3 PROGRAM COMPONENTS

1. Tuition Support  Annual scholarship to help cover tuition & fees at competitive colleges and universities.

2. Mentoring/Social Support  Each Scholar is paired with a Red Pine Advisor who is his/her primary contact for this program.  The role of the Advisor is to: o Provide Scholars with support and helpful advice o Facilitate problem solving and decision making (support students to access available resources at their schools and in their communities) o Provide access to a network of resources that will help Scholars to achieve the goals of the program: . Maintain strong academic performance . Have meaningful summer experiences . Build strong association as a Red Pine Scholar  Advisors will proactively reach out to Scholars at least twice annually (beginning of each semester), and more if desired. Scholars are expected to be in touch at least one more time per month or as often as necessary. This communication can be via email, phone, or in person if possible.

3. Flex Fund  Scholars who meet all program expectations can apply to the Flex Fund. Requirements include: o GPA of 3.0 or above o Consistent contact with Advisor  The purpose of the Flex Fund is to: o Help Scholars to take advantage of opportunities, in line with their academic goals, that otherwise would be financially prohibitive o Reward initiative and incentivize Scholar success o Enhance the college experience  Potential uses of the Flex Fund include: o Academic expenses o Travel to and from school o Stipends for summer internships with non-profits o Summer class tuition o Additional costs associated with study abroad (e.g., flight) o Other urgent financial needs  Scholars should work directly with their Advisor to make requests to the Flex Fund. Advisors will assess Scholars’ needs and decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis.  As a general guideline, qualifying students are eligible to receive up to $2,000 from the Flex Fund annually.  Payments CANNOT be made directly to students and CANNOT reimburse for expenses already incurred. Payments must be paid directly to vendors.  Please note: Any portion of the total grants and scholarships that exceed the cost of the student's tuition, fees, books and supplies is considered taxable to the student.

DEADLINES

Transcript and Renewal Submission Deadlines

 January 15th: Submit fall semester transcript to TPI  June 15th: Submit Renewal Application via online application system. The renewal application will be available on the TPI website.

If for any reason you are not able to make a deadline, notify your Advisor and Program staff in ADVANCE with an explanation.

Advisor Check-ins

In September, the Scholar and Advisor will determine the preferred method of contact (phone or email) for these check-ins. Advisors will proactively reach out to Scholars, and it is our expectation that Scholars will respond with updates about how things are going.

Scholars are always welcome to contact their Advisor whenever the need arises. For Scholars who are experiencing significant challenges, Advisors may request additional check-ins.
