Johnny Cash Musical Media Release - For Immediate Release – August 19, 2019 Johnny Cash musical "Ring of Fire" coming to Theatre Aquarius Hamilton, ON, August 19, 2019 – Theatre Aquarius is proud to announce that the celebrated musical Ring of Fire will be closing their 2019-20 theatre season. Ring of Fire celebrates the music and life of one of the most unforgettable musical artists of the 20th century, “The Man in Black” himself, Johnny Cash. Theatre Aquarius Artistic Director Ron Ulrich says “Jonny Cash was such a fascinating figure, who meant so much to a tremendous number of people. Of course he is known the world over as a gospel artist, as a country artist, and had the kind of crossover success that brought his unique sound to millions of people. What Ring of Fire does so well is to weave those songs into the story of the man himself, his growth as an artist, as an advocate for social change and as a person. We are tremendously excited by the opportunity to bring this story to our audience.” Ring of Fire is created by Richard Maltby Jr. and conceived by William Meade. It was adapted from the Broadway Production by Richard Maltby Jr. and Jason Edwards. Ring of Fire is presented by special arrangement with Theatrical Rights Worldwide. Ring of Fire will run from April 15 – May 2, 2020. Casting for the Theatre Aquarius production will be announced in the near future. The production will be directed by Tracey Flye, who recently directed a tremendously successful production of the show at Edmonton’s Citadel Theatre. Subscriptions for Theatre Aquarius’ 2019-20 theatre season are still available, offering six world- class theatrical productions for the price of four, including Ring of Fire, Norm Foster’s Renovations for Six and one of the greatest family musicals of all time, the 8-time Tony Award Winning Musical HAIRSPRAY. Johnny Cash by Dave Hoekstra Sept. 11, 1988 HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn. A slow drive from the new steel-and-glass Nashville airport to the old stone-and-timber House of Cash in Hendersonville absorbs a lot of passionate land. A couple of folks have pulled over to inspect a black honky-tonk piano that has been dumped along the roadway. Cabbie Harold Pylant tells me I am the same age Jesus Christ was when he was crucified. Of course, this is before Pylant hands over a liter bottle of ice water that has been blessed by St. Peter. This is life close to the earth. Johnny Cash has spent most of his 56 years near the earth, spiritually and physically. He was born in a three-room railroad shack in Kingsland, Ark. Father Ray Cash was an indigent farmer who, when unable to live off the black dirt, worked on the railroad, picked cotton, chopped wood and became a hobo laborer. Under a New Deal program, the Cash family moved to a more fertile northeastern Arkansas in 1935, where Johnny began work as a child laborer on his dad's 20-acre cotton farm. By the time he was 14, Johnny Cash was making $2.50 a day as a water boy for work gangs along the Tyronza River. "The hard work on the farm is not anything I've ever missed," Cash admitted in a country conversation at his House of Cash offices here, with Tom T. Hall on the turntable and an autographed picture of Emmylou Harris on the wall.

  • Johnny Cash Returns to ‘Stamping Ovation’ Legendary Singer Is Second Inductee Into Multi-Year Music Icons Series

Johnny Cash Returns to ‘Stamping Ovation’ Legendary Singer is Second Inductee into Multi-Year Music Icons Series NASHVILLE — John Carter Cash, Rosanne Cash, Larry Gatlin, Jamey Johnson, The Oak Ridge Boys, The Roys, Marty Stuart, Randy Travis and other entertainers paid tribute to Johnny Cash as he was inducted today into the Postal Service’s Music Icons Forever stamp series at the Grand Ole Opry’s Ryman Auditorium. “With his gravelly baritone and spare percussive guitar, Johnny Cash had a distinctive musical sound — a blend of country, rock ’n’ roll and folk — that he used to explore issues that many other popular musicians of his generation wouldn’t touch,” said U.S. Postal Service Board of Governors member Dennis Toner. “His songs tackled sin and redemption, good and evil, selfishness, loneliness, temptation, love, loss and death. And Johnny explored these themes with a stark realism that was very different from other popular music of that time.” “It is an amazing blessing that my father, Johnny Cash be honored with this stamp. Dad was a hardworking man, a man of dignity. As much as anything else he was a proud American, always supporting his family, fans and country. I can think of no better way to pay due respect to his legacy than through the release of this stamp,” said singer-songwriter, producer John Carter Cash, Johnny Cash’s son.

  • “At Folsom Prison”—Johnny Cash (1968) Added to the National Registry: 2003 Essay by Cary O’Dell
“At Folsom Prison”—Johnny Cash (1968) Added to the National Registry: 2003 Essay by Cary O’Dell Original album cover Original label Glen Sherley Johnny Cash first sang about Folsom Prison in 1955 in his self-penned song “Folsom Prison Blues.” Originally inspired by an American fictional film on the prison he had seen while in the army in Germany, “Blues” became one of Cash’s signature songs and a staple of his repertoire. On February 10, 1968, the song had a homecoming of sorts when Cash and his talented sidemen staged—and recorded--a historic concert at California’s Folsom State Prison, then a maximum security facility housing well over 1,000 inmates. The resulting album, “At Folsom Prison,” is a seminal work of American country music and, arguably, the defining achievement of Johnny Cash’s long and remarkable career. The February ’68 concert was not the first time Cash had performed at Folsom, or at a prison. Since the release of the original “Folsom Prison” single in ’55, Cash had been receiving numerous invitations to perform at penitentiaries from inmates who sensed a kinship with the Man in Black. A devout Christian, Cash saw such performances as part of his ministry and he played his first penitentiary, Huntsville State Prison in Texas, in 1957. He followed that performance up with a show at San Quentin where, in the audience, among the inmates, sat a young Merle Haggard. It was Cash’s friend, pastor and prisoner counselor Reverend Floyd Gressett, who first brought Cash to Folsom. His inaugural show behind that prison’s legendary Gothic walls was in 1966 and proved an artistic, if undocumented, success.
