2019 Summary for Bramingham These series of reports provide a summary of the latest available information on the demographic and socio-economic make-up of the nineteen wards in Luton. It looks at the population structure and provides information on the economic, housing and educational achievement of each ward. What’s new – April 2019: Perceptions survey update (i) Bramingham’s view of Luton: 12 per cent feel the image of Luton has improved over the last year 36 per cent feel positive about the future of this town Residents top rated aspects: 1. Schools (71%) 2. Further / higher education (65%) 3. Sports & leisure facilities (57%) November 2018: Housing there are 74,293 households in Luton of which 2,971 (4 per cent) are in Bramingham Bramingham has 50.3 per cent detached, 21.4 per cent semi-detached, 20.4 per cent terraced and 7.3 per cent purpose built flats (ii) the most common tenure in Bramingham is by household’s owned with a mortgage (49.7 per cent) followed by households owned outright (33.4 per cent) (iii) Bramingham has one of the lowest levels of social rented households with 3.3 per cent. The lowest is in Barnfield with 1.5 per cent and highest in Northwell with 33.8 per cent (iv) the average three bedroom house in Luton in October 2018, cost £280,000 compared to £355,000 in Bramingham (v) Bramingham had the second lowest proportion of overcrowding in Luton, with five per cent (vi) August 2018: Health Bramingham had the second lowest levels of low birth weights over a five year period with 7.7 per cent. Luton’s average was 9.1 per cent (vii) In the 2011 census, the percentage of people who self-reported bad or very bad health in Bramingham was 3.3 per cent (as a percentage of the total number of people who responded to this question). The average for Luton was 4.8 per cent (viii) Bramingham had the lowest levels of obesity in children (both reception and year six) compared to the average in Luton. Adult obesity was about the same as Luton’s average (ix) the average life expectancy in Luton for females is 82.4 per cent and male 78.5 per cent; in comparison, Bramingham’s average was higher for both genders with 84.4 and 82.8 per cent respectively (x) the highest number of deaths recorded in Bramingham was caused by circulatory disease, followed closely by cancer (xi) 3 of 27 Bramingham ward profile v4.0 – April 2019 April 2018: Demographics (xii) Bramingham ward is located in the north of the town. The population of Bramingham (based on mid- year estimate 2016) was just over 7,200, accounting for three per cent of Luton’s population Bramingham has a higher proportion of residents aged over 45 in comparison to the rest of Luton. Residents aged over 45 accounts for almost 46 per cent of the population in Bramingham in comparison to 33 per cent in the rest of the town Population (xiii) the white (British, Scottish, N. Irish, Welsh) population of Bramingham consists of 69.9 per cent, compared to 44.6 per cent in Luton the next highest proportion living in Bramingham are Indian with 7.7 per cent, following by Irish with 3.3 per cent Deprivation (xiv) 2015 indices of multiple deprivation indicated Bramingham in the top 20 per cent least deprived nationally. It is one of only four wards in Luton which is not classified as deprived the percentage of children living in poverty after housing costs is ranked the lowest in the borough Economic activity Bramingham has a higher proportion of economically active population than the rest of Luton with 84.5 per cent compared to 74.3 per cent in Luton (xv) the unemployment rate is almost half that of the rest of Luton and 2.2 per cent lower than the average in England and Wales (xvi) the majority of those in employment in Bramingham are in managerial and professional occupation Crime (xvii) Bramingham has the second lowest rate of claimants in Luton, with 45 people claiming unemployment benefit at the start of 2018; a rate of 0.9 per cent the number of burglary offences, hate crime, ASB and fly tipping incidents reported between 2016 and 2017 were the lowest in Bramingham in
