Bonded by the man who held their family together, Lee and Patrick struggle to adjust to a world without him. The Adjustment Bureau (2011) Abstract This is a film review of The Adjustment Bureau (2011). Dick’s short story, Adjustment Team, the film The Adjustment Bureau is an exploration of human freedom, fate, free will and determinism. Written and directed by George Nolfi, the film serves as a unique springboard into this captivating theological/philosophical debate. The major presupposition against free will is voiced by one of the agents: “[Humans] don’t have free will, [they] have the appearance… major choices are all predetermined.” A challenge is presented by the following quote: “free will is a gift you never know how to use, until you have to fight for it.” David Norris (Matt Damon) is a self-destructive, impulsive, young congressman, who squanders an opportunity to gain a New York Senate seat by performing a lewd act which is caught on camera. -

FINAL Orpheus in a Gray Flannel Suit: George Nolfi’s The Adjustment Bureau (2011) Seán Easton The Adjustment Bureau (2011), written and directed by George Nolfi, draws on ancient and modern versions of the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice to dramatize a conflict between devotion to career and personal fulfillment.1 In this film, David Norris (Matt Damon), a rising political figure in New York, finds that the mysterious Adjustment Bureau is working to sabotage his relationship with Elise (Emily Blunt) in order to direct him toward a political future of great national consequence. Nolfi dramatizes this conflict by combining the Orpheus myth’s themes of love, loss, and the limits of individual agency with the U.S. myth of the post-World War II company man, whose successful career imperils his domestic happiness. The core elements of the Orpheus myth derive from the canonical versions that emerge from Greco-Roman antiquity.2 According to Ovid’s Metamorphoses, the best-known version, on the day of their wedding, Orpheus’ wife Eurydice falls prey to a lethal snakebite. Orpheus, a supremely talented singer and lyre-player, enters the Underworld and, through the persuasive power of his music, gains permission to return with Eurydice to the upper world—on the condition that he not look back at her until they reach their destination. Just before completing this journey, Orpheus panics and looks back; Eurydice is then reclaimed by the Underworld. In its classical versions, a defeated Orpheus retreats into song and is torn apart by female worshippers of Bacchus. In post-classical iterations of the myth, especially in opera, husband and wife sometimes triumph over death.3 FINAL Nolfi engages the myth’s themes by making Norris an unrealized Orpheus figure, who begins to fulfill his identity only upon meeting his Eurydice. -

This study investigated the common features of action movie review writing in terms of the writing pattern and organizational formats. It also examined types of writing as well as their purposes, sentence structures, and word choices used in writing action movie reviews. The data used for analysis were the content of ten action movie reviews from the year 2007 to 2008 on the website www.imdb.com. The criteria for analyzing the features of writing were based on Rudeen’s organizational formats (2000) and Garbis et al.,’s (2001) movie review guidelines. The results of the study revealed four main patterns: Pattern 1: Providing a Board Overview; Pattern 2: Comparison with the Previous Episodes; Pattern 3: Describing the Movie’s Storyline; and Pattern 4: Providing Reviewer’s Comments or Concluding the Review. -
The Adjustment Bureau “The Adjustment Bureau” Is a Spirited
The Adjustment Bureau “The Adjustment Bureau” is a spirited, compelling pastiche. It positively extrudes different genres: political drama, romance, fantasy picture, science fiction, as well as chase thriller, yet it combines them into an animated, bubbly blend that is highly entertaining. The story is one in which you must simply suspend disbelief and just—go with it. You either accept the funky otherworld premise or you don’t, but if you do, it’s a lively ride. A rising young Brooklyn politician, David Norris (Mark Damon), running for senator from New York, meets cute with a young dancer, Elise Sellas (Emily Blunt) in a men’s washroom. From this first funky encounter, David is plainly smitten. It appears, however, that a cadre of angelic guys in gray flannel Mad Men suits (led by a sympathetic Anthony Mackie and a droll John Slattery) finds that the couple’s meeting was not meant to be but was rather an aberration in the Overall Scheme of Things (it happens, incidentally, only because of a spilled cup of coffee). These businesslike guys of The Adjustment Bureau (another figure, played archly by Terence Stamp, later joins the story) try to get the fates aligned by keeping the two apart but David, hopelessly in love with Elise, finds a way to be with her even if he must challenge destiny’s grip. Much of the plot involves his trying to thwart the powers that want to re-set the wrinkle in time he has caused, and both characters learn that they have to sacrifice for each other and their love rather than, separately, attain their true predestined ends as president (he) and renowned choreographer (her).
