Notes: The folder includes several worksheets and a detailed history/ description of the property prepared for the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation. Situated along the Hudson River, Seven Oaks was originally developed as a 25-acre estate in the 19th century. Historically the grounds have featured open fields and dense, wooded areas, as well as numerous gardens. Although about 10 wooded acres were subdivided by the early 1990s, the Gothic Revival estate house, built in 1862, remains, as well as several Gothic Revival outbuildings and a more modern machine shop. In the 20th century a long was added to the coachman's residence, but the core property remains essentially unaltered. Originally owned by the Park family, the estate passed in 1911 into the possession of Seth Fox, a New York City merchant. The Fox family used Seven Oaks as a summer place until the early 1920s, when they made it their year-round residence. The Fox family was also responsible for developing Seven Oaks' gardens, which are documented in this collection. Persons associated with the garden include: Charles F. Park (former owner, ca. 1860-1911); Seth Fox (former owner, 1911-?); and Arthur Woodward Fox and Ada Augusta Treadwell Fox (former owners). Pennsylvania

PA834: Fairview -- Brier Hill Garden Notes: Approximately 12 acres developed and owned by the McBrier family for over 100 years. The land was first developed with the construction of the summer house which was built in 1914 at the end of a private drive on a hill overlooking a natural ravine. The land features woodlands, specimen trees, rolling lawns, and a ravine with bog garden. From the house a stone stairway leads to a large concrete dam built in 1915 that allowed for the family to control the flow of the running stream and the natural spring. In 1927, after clearing chestnuts infected with

Page 47 of 64 Series 1: Garden Images American Gardens Collection AAG.AGC

blight, Mr. Frederick McBrier hired Arthur Westcott Cowell. Cowell was the landscape architect who established the Department of Landscape Architecture at Pennsylvania State College. Cowell designed the ravine with bog garden, cutting gardens, and trees around the summer home. After the death of Mrs. Grace Richardson McBrier her son (James McBrier) and his wife (Blossom McBrier, a member of the American Rhododendron Society) revitalized and created a year-round home on Brier Hill in 1972 from the summer home. A major change was the addition of a to look into and across the ravine. They also established the lower walkway and primrose path leading to the concrete dam. They have maintained the Cowell designed gardens and replaced trees as needed. They have also created new gardens of rhododendrons, azaleas, hybrids of the world, and all kinds of Cronus. Throughout the property of various gardens there are seating inlets that contain antique white wrought iron, black wrought iron, natural wood benches, and wicker sofa, table and chairs. These seating areas are intended to invite visitors to rest and appreciate the gardens. The property is still maintained by a team of gardeners under the instruction of Blossom McBrier who has hosted garden club visits and opens the garden up to the public each Memorial Day. The property also features sizeable vegetable gardens, cutting gardens, and a native azalea bed. The trees around the house include Bay Magnolia, Native Florida Rutgers, Japanese Maple, Cronus, and a variety of evergreens. The original plantings in 1927 also included over 400 rhododendrons, 200 mountain laurels, and trees, many of which still exist in the natural ravine. Today, the ravine is filled with the original planting of bay maximums, mountain laurels, azaleas, and multiple varieties of native trees. Across the property there are over 100 tree species, hybrids and rhododendrons. Many of the specimen trees are over 100 years old. Also featured are extensive collections of rhododendrons of all types. Persons associated with the garden include: Mr. Frederick B. McBrier and Mrs. Grace Richardson McBrier (former owner, -1944); Grace Richardson McBrier (former owner, 1944-1966); Mr. James R. McBrier and Mrs. Blossom P. Tennessee

TN082: Knoxville -- Hillspoint Former owner: Dean, James W. Dean, Minniebel S. Dean, Katie Dean, James M. Dean, Laura M. Garden Dean, Bonarges M. designer: Notes: The folder includes worksheets, historical information, family histories, additional photographs and photocopies of articles. When Hillspoint was acquired in the late 1920s it was a thirty- acre tract on a ridge overlooking the Tennessee and Little Rivers and the Cumberland Mountains. An informal cottage- style house with cedar shakes siding and stone chimneys was designed by BarberMcMurray architects and five acres of gardens were designed by family member Bonarges M. Dean. The spectacular natural setting was enhanced by garden rooms that were recessed and set away from the house so as not to obstruct the views. Native stone including marble and millstones from local industries were used to build walls along the roads, to outline garden rooms, for curving paths that connected cultivated to wild gardens, and to enclose two ponds. There were kitchen, rose, wild, herb and secret garden rooms that featured indigenous flowers and trees within the five acres, and 25 acres of woodlands. The original house burned down in 1967 and was nearly replicated by a house built in 1980, and the current owners care for a three-acre garden with the same hardscaping and natural style as the original. Some changes over time include natural arbors formed by 50- year-old unclipped boxwood that arch over the side paths that lead from the secret garden. Metal arbors and trellises installed in the 1950s replaced the original cedar posts. The original rose and cutting garden now is a formal rose garden with beds edged in brick. Vinca and English ivy planted as ground covers in the 1950s is being removed and replaced with indigenous wild flowers that grow as an understory in the woodlands and among the native rocks sited in the 1930s. The original recessed secret garden had white lattices in flower beds; now it is a green and white garden with flowering trees and shrubs with an understory of groundcovers. Elsewhere native trees have matured and

Page 51 of 64 Series 1: Garden Images American Gardens Collection AAG.AGC

specimen trees have been added alongside the reflecting pool. A fernery has been planted under the trees in the woodlands. An alpine meadow with eight varieties of dwarf to midsize conifers, groupings of native shrubs, bulbs and wildflowers has been installed downhill from the house and is cut back each spring to preserve the view. Persons associated with the garden include James W. and Minniebel S. Dean, James W. and Katie D. Dean (former owners, 1927 until circa 1979); Charles H. and Lottie L. Virginia

VA398: Fairfax Station -- Tranquility Acres Notes: The folder includes worksheets, a detailed history of the development of the gardens, and extensive plant lists. Located in the suburbs of the Washington, D.C. metro area in Virginia, Tranquility Acres began as a 5.34 acre heavily wooded property purchased in 1978. An area was cleared for a fruit orchard which was planted in the fall of 1978 but it soon

Page 60 of 64 Series 1: Garden Images American Gardens Collection AAG.AGC

succumbed to deer and cicadas. The following spring azaleas which had been propagated in 1974 were introduced to the property. Upon approval of building plans, the owners broke ground in 1979 and began construction of their home. From clearing the land to building the house, the owners constructed their home themselves, completing the project in 1983. Today the property contains 42 distinct gardens nestled amongst the native trees, including over 300 perennial species, over 500 named hybrid azaleas, over 30 tree species and numerous additional plantings including bulb, shrubs, hybrid camellias and hybrid rhododendrons. Of the plants included on the property, many were rescued from development projects, perennials are largely started from seeds which are saved and shared, and a great number of the azaleas were started from cuttings. To accommodate such extensive plantings, the gardens were planned to be low-maintenance. Each garden was designed independently; much of the planting was completed in sections so that one area would be completed before the next was begun. The gardens are informal and naturalistic, with garden paths being the leading element in each design, followed by color and texture of the plantings. VA378: Unidentified -- Barbara's Garden Notes: The folder includes an information sheet, a features plan, a slide plan, a slide list and a plant list. Located in the suburbs of the Washington, D.C. metro area in Virginia, the brick rambler on the property dates to the 1950s. The current owner re-designed the garden in 1998 and the backyard garden redesigned in 2005 by the owner. Barbara's garden achieves the contemporary urban ideal of low-maintenance and functional beauty. The house is situated at the top of a small hill with a sloping lawn which leads down to the sidewalk and street. The not- so-secret terraced front garden is practically maintenance-free and a stone retaining wall gives the front garden structure. A large crepe myrtle and two dogwoods anchor the front garden along with cherry laurel, azaleas and ornamental grasses with perennials for seasonal color. The backyard garden suits the owner who wants a serene beautiful space for entertaining and outdoor dining plus space for her small dog. Garden features include a large deck for dining, a small lawn area with a garden border planted with trees and perennials, a small and an enclosed vegetable and herb garden. Barbara's Garden related holdings consist of 1 folder (16 digital images)
