RUTGERS DRAFTS TEAM IMPACT’S ANDREW DIGIOVANNI The Scarlet Knight, who graduated last Decem- ber with a degree in Labor Studies, was picked up by the club after playing this summer with the Premier Development League’s North County United in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

The Scarlet Knights had a special Signing Day ceremony on September 7 and welcomed 15- year old Andrew DiGiovanni from Rahway, New Jersey to be a part of the Rutgers men’s soccer program.

Andrew has a passion for soccer, but after being diagnosed with hemophilia as an infant, he has been unable to participate in the sport he loves. With hemophilia, Andrew’s body has difficulty making blood clots, a process needed to stop bleeding. Simple contact injuries could cause easy bruising and permanent damage.

“It goes back to when I was seven months old,” said Andrew. “My mother started to see a lot of bruises on me and we went to the doctor and they weren’t sure what I had. They realized I had hemophilia. I started to realize that I had it when I was four or five years old because that’s when I started to have to injections with needles for my medication.”

While taking to the field for a competitive match is not in the cards for Andrew, teaming up with Team IMPACT has given him the chance to still be a part of the soccer team experience.

Team IMPACT is a national nonprofit that connects children facing serious and chronic illnesses with collegiate athletic programs. The program not only provides support and encouragement to kids with medical challenges, but also enhances life lessons and perspective to collegiate student-athletes at the same time.

“Andrew is really into soccer and I’m really happy he has this opportunity to be a part of the Rut- gers team,” said Andrew’s mother Milinda, who took part in the signing day ceremony along with his sister, Gabriella. “It takes away from any trouble he may be going through. He can just release all his stress here. The guys are here to support him and be there for him. It means so much to me to have the Rutgers team here for him and my family. It’s really huge.”

With the members of the men’s soccer program looking on, in addition to Rutgers Athletic Direc- tor Pat Hobbs, the Scarlet Knight mascot and members of the cheer program, the Scarlet Knights surprised Andrew with a honorary national letter of intent to become a member of the team.

“This is a big day for the entire program and Andrew,” said senior and tri-captain Thomas Dovell. “It’s not just what we do on the field, it’s about how we support the community and getting oth- ers involved in Rutgers soccer.

“We’ve been trying to set this up for a good couple of weeks. Andrew is a great kid. His strength and his courage is really going to push our team to the next level and it’s great just having him around. We’ve been hanging out with him, been getting to know him better. It’s just great to have him here finally on the Rutgers soccer team.”

“It was really a special day and Andrew is a phenomenal kid,” said head coach Dan Donigan. “His personality, his fight, his passion, his energy is what it’s all about. We want to be a positive influence for him and know he has people in his corner to help him through his daily fight. He’s fighting a difficult disease and life is not easy for him. He’s going to have his struggles and we want him to know that all us are there for him and he can lean on us whenever he needs to and vice versa.”

While the Scarlet Knight family is there to support Andrew, the team also sees an opportunity to learn and be inspired by the courageous young man.

“Whenever I go through some type of challenge, I always say to myself ‘be strong, stay strong and become strong’,” said the newest Scarlet Knight with a big smile. RUTGERS MEN’S SOCCER GAME NOTES

The conference is hard enough, but we showed we had some really good chances, especially in the second ally keep the ball and not turn it over as soon as we win it a lot of resilience to do this on the road against a team half, and had some great contribution from the bench and because that puts us in a defensive posture again. We’re also fighting to get a footing in the standings. There’s got our depth into the mix. I was happy with the resilience chasing, we’re fighting, which is all good, but the more you still a long way to go. There’s still four more conference they showed and we have to do that every time, every half, do that, the more fatigue is going to set in and I think that’s games left for us and we want to take care of business what happened a little bit in the second half.” every minute.” one by one.” RUTGERS MEN’S SOCCER GAME NOTES

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Rutgers men’s soccer team found themselves with an early lead and fought back to make it a 2-2 game midway through the first half, but an own goal in the second half halted the Scarlet Knights’ chances of putting together back-to-back wins in a 3-2 setback against Drexel on Tuesday night at Yurcak Field.

Rutgers (2-7-1) junior forward Jordan Hall scored his seventh goal of the season a mere three minutes into the contest taking a free kick just outside the top right of the 18 into lower left corner. The goal put the Manchester, England product a top the goals scored rankings in the Big Ten.

It was two restart situations, however, that gave the Drag- ons (7-2-2) a 2-1 edge. Drexel punched back two minutes after Hall’s score with Kewsi Allen finding the back of the Scarlet Knight net from 25 yards out. Then in the eighth minute, the serve by the Dragon’s Michael McCarthy near the midline was headed by Mathias Ebbesen across the goal to Chris Donovan for the header into to opposite corner.

The Scarlet Knights, however, tied the match up at 2-2 in the 21st minute. RU maintained possession after a corner kick at the far side of the field and redshirt senior Miles Hackett kept the ball in play along the end line. Hackett delivered the ball back to freshman Andrew Murray, who buried his first collegiate goal from eight yards out.

Drexel’s game-winner came off an own goal. The Dragon’s Chris Donovan crossed the ball in front of Rutgers goal where the ball was inadvertently knocked in by the Scarlet Knights trying to get it to keeper Rafael Pereira.

The Dragons ended the night with a 15-14 edge in shots taken and 8-6 advantage in corner kicks.

Pereira made five stops for Rutgers, while Stephen Kopsa- chillis registered three.

DONIGAN ON THE DREXEL GAME: “We went with three in the back trying to get more num- bers up front. We went with two guys up top looking for combinations and for more numbers in the attack to create more opportunities and finish plays off. We are making progress, but unfortunately we ran into another good opponent in Drexel, who is good in second phase restarts. They have some good size and got a lot of knockdowns and second chances and that’s what led them to the result they got tonight. We just need to find a way to find close games against tough matches like this.” RUTGERS MEN’S SOCCER GAME NOTES
