LIFESPAN NEWS F July 2012 23 JUDICIAL CANDIDATE SURVEY

Lifespan sent the following three-question survey to each candidate for judicial office in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb Coun- ties, including Appeals Court, Circuit Court, District Court, Probate Court and County Prosecutor. She recalled that her father taught her how to bottle beer at the tender age of five. She was the first and Sonly child in her family to be born in a hospital, the rest were born at the family farmhouse. She moved with her family to Detroit where her father worked at a gas station to support the family. Graduating high school in St. Cecelia’s class of 1935, she moved on to to study chemistry. (She knew the chemical equa- tion for ammonia at age 90—NH3 or soluble NH4OH. While there in the Neumann Club, she met Charles Kleinbrook who went to the University of Detroit. They were married in November, 1940, until his death in 1982. Days after Pearl Harbor, Chuck volunteered for the war effort and she followed her husband from army base to base; she moved over forty times in four years. As a volunteer, she drove army trucks from the Warren, Michigan tank plant to Norfolk, VA on two-lane roads at night through the Allegheny Mountains. She lost a brother in the war in 1944, and she faithfully maintained his grave thereafter. After the war, she and Chuck settled in Dearborn Heights where they reared their children: Judy, Jim, Chip and foster daughter, Barbara. She was a pinch-hit bus driver for school events, thanks to her army truck driv- ing experience. Field trips to the DIA, Greenfield Village, Cedar Pointe and Ann Arbor were places where she needed no maps. Her bucket list included a visit to pilgrimage sites and shrines not only in the U.S., but also in Italy, Portugal, France, Ireland and Yugoslavia. She was known as Mom, Grandma, Aunt Helen, Helen O’Toole, Helen, Mrs. K., friend and neighbor. She brought food for the hungry, sent money for the poor, and generously supported friends and numerous chari- ties with her time and grassroots efforts. A child of the Great Depression, she recycled and saved and composted before “being green” was in vogue. Helen was involved in the Right-to-Life movement from its inception. As a member of People Taking Action Against Abortion (PTAAA) she began her volunteering in Gloria Klein’s (Founder of Lifespan) basement in the early 1970s. She began helping with mailings, volunteering once or twice a week. Often Helen would come into the office and give us $2.00 and some coins, saying, “Here’s the money I received for cutting so and so’s hair. Use it where needed.” Later, as the Church Representative for Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, she submitted weekly notes for the church bulletin, led prayers for the unborn after Mass, was responsible for the Lifespan table at the yearly festival and offered parishioners pro-life Christmas cards, January luminaries, Mother’s Day roses and Father’s Day pens and candy bars. These tasks she faithfully did until she went In May of 2010, Diane Fagelman presented Helen Kleinbrook into the nursing home at age 92. Helen’s devotion to Life with the Proudly Pro-Life Award was shown in her response to whatever she was asked to for her many years of devoted service to Lifespan. Looking on is Helen’s son, Charles (Chip) Kleinbrook. do—she always said, “yes.” She was always concerned for her fellow volunteers and the office help, inquiring about our health, asking what she could do for us, etc. We always knew, without a doubt, that Helen’s prayers contained many petitions for the unborn, the handicapped, the aged and for us, her friends. The words Patience, Humility, Compassion, Mercy, Love and unflagging Energy describe her perfectly. We will keep her memory alive. Her love for the un- born and generosity to Lifespan are her legacy to us. May she rest in peace.
