SPRING 2010 THE BELL Eric Harding Thiman was born at Ashford, Kent on 12th September 1900, the son of a Congregational minister. He was educated at Caterham School, and after early lessons in the piano, organ and violin, and some coaching for degree work from Harold Darke, he attained the Mus. D. at London when only twenty- seven. He became organist at Park Chapel, Crouch End, North London in 1927, and in 1957 moved to the City Temple (often referred to as the Cathedral of the Free Churches), where he remained until his death on 13th February 1975. From 1931, he was Professor of Harmony and Composition at the Royal Academy of Music, and from 1956 for several years, Dean of the Faculty of Music at London University. He became well known as an adjudicator at musical festivals and as an examiner for the Royal College of Organists, the Royal Military School of Music and the Royal Schools of Music. A tireless conductor of choral societies, he worked latterly with the Elysian Choir. Thiman was a prolific composer of anthems, services, part-songs, church and secular cantatas and pieces for the piano, organ, strings and orchestra. He was Musical Editor of the hymn book Congregational Praise and the author of a number of text books. Appearing in a golden age of English music, in which songwriters like Quilter, Ireland, Bax, Warlock, C. W. Orr, Moeran and Finzi flourished, Thiman’s songs were easily overlooked. This selection shows that their neglect is unjustified; some deserve to survive in the permanent repertory of English song. -

Although very interesting findings have been reported over the years, there is a lack of a unified approach to the matter. Relevant publications mostly concentrate on single aspects only and are scattered across different disciplines. Especially an automated estimation based on the audio material itself has hardly been addressed in the past. However, it is not only an interesting and challenging topic, it also allows for very practical applications. The motivation for the presented research lies in the enhancement of human interaction with digital music collections. As we will discuss, there is a variety of tasks to be considered, such as collection visualization, play-list generation, or the automatic recommendation of music. While this thesis doesn’t deal with any of these problems in deep detail it aims to provide a useful contribution to their solution in form of a set of music complexity descriptors. -

ABSTRACT Roger Quilter is best known for his elegant and refined songs, which are rooted in late Victorian parlour-song, and are staples of the English artsong repertoire. This thesis has two aims: to explore his output beyond the canon of about twenty-five songs which overshadows the rest of his work; and to counter an often disparaging view of his music, arising from his refusal to work in large-scale forms, the polished assurance of his work, and his education other than in an English musical establishment. These aims are achieved by presenting biographical material, which places him in his social and musical context as a wealthy, upper-class, Edwardian gentleman composer, followed by an examination of his music. Various aspects of his solo and partsong œuvre are considered; his incidental music for the play Where the Rainbow Ends and its contribution to the play’s West End success are examined fully; a chapter on his light opera sheds light on his collaborative working practices, and traces the development of the several versions of the work; and his piano, instrumental and orchestral works are discussed within their function as light music. -

Important note for weddings: Check with your celebrant (minister, rabbi, priest, etc.) before choosing your music. Some faiths, houses of worship, or celebrants do not allow secular (non-religious) music or particular selections. In addition, some may not permit particular selections to be performed during the ceremony itself or outside the walls of a house of worship. In the following list, please note: “The Angelical Hymn”, which does not fit exactly into any one of the following categories, is the most requested wedding recessional selection, because it sounds like wedding bells. It will work with music from any other category. Tastes change over time, so if you don’t see one of your favorites, please ask if it is still in Anne’s repertoire or if the sheet music is still commercially available.
