Essays In Industrial Organization And Applied Microeconomics Abstract This dissertation consists of three essays in the areas of Industrial Organization and Applied Microeconomics. The first essay studies high-tech firms' product portfolio choices under competition. I develop a model of dynamic portfolio adjustments in the context of the Chinese smartphone market, using the product life cycle as an empirically tractable heuristic to capture firms' dynamic incentives in new product introductions. I first show that product life cycles endogenously arise in markets with rapid technological innovations, are heterogeneous across products, and are affected by the level of market competition. I then estimate smartphone demand and manufacturers' variable, maintenance and sunk introduction costs on a detailed monthly market-level dataset of Chinese smartphones between 2009 and 2014. Finally, I use a 2012 large-scale pro-competitive policy introduced by the Chinese government as an experiment to decompose the handset manufacturers' incentives to introduce new products and show that the increased competition reduces the average product's short-run profits yb 5% but its lifetime profits yb 41% by shrinking its product life cycle.

  • The Excellent Nokia X5 Boasting a Square Design and Various Colour Options
Feb 13, 2011 23:46 GMT The Excellent Nokia X5 Boasting A Square Design And Various Colour Options The Nokia X5 looks like a typical fashion phone to the naked eye, its square shape a welcome break from the host of bar shaped phones available. Delve a little deeper however and you will find that this attractive model is more than a pretty face, and is actually a good quality smartphone with great media features. So could this be the model that is the perfect compromise between looks and functionality? Typically, when a handset offers a more compact design, something is sacrifced, and more often than not this is text input with keys becoming more cramped and screens becoming smaller. The X5 has overcome this issue my making this phone a slider design, meaning tucked away beneath the screen there is a fully functioning four row Qwerty keypad. Yes this adds a little depth to the unit, but considering the benefits that it brings this can easily be forgiven. The size is not the only eye catching feature of this model, design wise it is very neat, and upon release will be available in blue, green, pink and purple colours as well as the traditional graphite black. Such a range is going to make this phone hugely popular with the younger market as well as females looking for a stylish yet small phone to slip into a handbag. Despite being essentially a messenging device, it is hard to see the X5 competing head to head with the likes of the Blackberry Pearl 3G, these handsets appealing to the more business orientated user.

M-Learning: A Proposed Pedagogical Model for Institutions of Higher Learning in Africa Eunice Maingi*1, Grace Kihumba*2, Joseph Sevilla*1 *1Strathmore University, Kenya, *2Carnegie Mellon University, USA 0417 The European Conference on Technology in the Classroom 2013 Official Conference Proceedings 2013 Abstract Kenya was propelled onto the world stage with mobile phone technology after the successful implementation of mobile money transfer in 2007. Since then, researchers in Kenya and Africa at large started looking into the possibilities of a similar revolution in education. Kenya has a population estimated at 40 million people and there are 30 million active mobile phone numbers. On the contrary, Kenya has about 9 computers per 1000 people. Therefore, e-learning via computers has limited prospects. Furthermore, Internet access in Kenya is primarily via mobile devices. Internet-enabled phones as well as cheaper lower-end smart phones have become increasingly available in Kenya. Strathmore University in Nairobi conducted an investigation into the applicability of mobile learning (m-learning) for the current institution pedagogy. First, an analysis of existing m- learning platforms was done, with a bias for Free and Open Source platforms that would be accessible in Africa. The project team then carried out a study among 531 students in order to establish their perceptions towards m-learning. A customized m-learning Moodle application was subsequently designed and 118 students used it for a weeklong pilot study. From the research findings, it was evident that exploiting m-learning in higher education institutions, in Kenya and the rest of Africa could result in a paradigm shift in the instructional practices used in developing countries.

  • The Excellent Nokia X5-A Blend of Striking Design and Great Features
Feb 13, 2011 23:44 GMT The Excellent Nokia X5-A Blend Of Striking Design And Great Features Every once in a while, Nokia tinker with the design of their handsets and come up with something a little different, and this is most certainly the case with the new X5 handset. Its square shape places it right in the fashion phone category, but for once this does not mean a lack of features as this attractive model is a nifty smartphone running on the Symbian OS. The problem with reducing the size of a handset is that inevitably text inputting becomes more restrictive, the screen is to small for pratical use and the numeric keypad is always a little time consuming, especially on e mails. Thus a solution of sorts has been discovered here by fitting this compact unit with its own slide out Qwerty keypad. Yes it adds to the thickness of the device, making it 16.9mm, but it allows much more space to be dedicated to keys, resulting in a more pleasing user experience. At just 129 grammes in weight, the phone is also quite lightweight. The design of the phone is going to limit it appeal, your typical businessman looking for a messenging device is much more likely to go down the Blackberry Curve 3G path, however the X5 will have its fans, and looking at the vibrant range of colours available and the excellent social networking features, it is evident this will be a hit with the younger market and is perhaps designed with females in mind.
