Elrod, University of Michigan, USA Abstract: Streaming technologies continue to shift audience viewing practices. However, aside from addressing how these developments allow for more complex serialized streaming television, not much work has approached concerns of specific genres that fall under the field of digital streaming. How do emergent and encouraged modes of viewing across various SVOD platforms re-shape how audiences affectively experience and interact with genre and generic texts? What happens to collective audience discourses as the majority of viewers’ situated consumption of new serial content becomes increasingly accelerated, adaptable, and individualized? Given the range and diversity of genres and fandoms, which often intersect and overlap despite their current fragmentation across geographies, platforms, and lines of access, why might it be pertinent to reconfigure genre itself as a site or node of affective experience and interactive, collective production? Finally, as studies of streaming television advance within the industry and academia, how might we ponder on a genre-by- genre basis, fandoms’ potential need for time and space to collectively process and interact affectively with generic serial texts – in other words, to consider genres and generic texts themselves as key mediative sites between the contexts of production and those of fans’ interactivity and communal, affective pleasure? This article draws together threads of commentary from the industry, scholars, and culture writers about SVOD platforms, emergent viewing practices, speculative genres, and fandoms to argue for the centrality of genre in interventions into audience studies.

Turn them off, a women’s magazine suggested in 1995, and turn on Mother Teresa, since watching her ‘caring feelings’ radiate from the screen, according to psychologist Dr. David McClelland of Harvard, has been shown to raise the level of an antibody that fights colds. ‘It stands to reason,’ reasons a First magazine writer, ‘that viewing threatening, confrontational images could create an opposite reaction.’ In fact, given that talks shows ‘create feelings of frustration’ and fear, ‘shattering our trust and faith’ in our expectations of people’s behavior, and ‘give us a false perception of reality,’ it is perhaps best to watch game shows or soaps while nursing that cold. Watching daytime talk shows could conceivably send you into a decline into pathologies of all sorts: scared, angry, disgusted, convinced you are abnormal for not fitting in with the ‘cast of misfits and perverts,’ susceptible to both perversion and more colds [Gamson, p. 3].     The death of postfeminism : Oprah and the Riot Grrrls talk back by Cathy Sue Copenhagen A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in English Montana State University © Copyright by Cathy Sue Copenhagen (2002) Abstract: This paper addresses the ways feminism operates in two female literary communities: the televised Oprah Winfrey talk show and book club and the Riot Grrrl zine movement. Both communities are analyzed as ideological responses of women and girls to consumerism, media conglomeration, mainstream appropriation of movements, and postmodern "postfeminist" cultural fragmentation. The far-reaching "Oprah" effect on modem publishing is critiqued, as well as the controversies and contradictions of the effect. Oprah is analyzed as a divided text operating in a late capitalist culture with third wave feminist tactics. The Riot Grrrl movement is discussed as the potential beginning of a fourth wave of feminism. The Grrrls redefine feminism and femininity in their music and writings in zines. The two sites are important to study as they are mainly populated by under represented segments of "postfeminist" society: middle aged women and young girls. Class Time: T or R 9-12 p.m. COURSE DESCRIPTION: Since its inception in September 1996, Oprah’s Book Club (OBC) has transformed the literary landscape—from ushering in a new wave of enthusiastic readers and spiking the sale of books around the globe to reshaping the advertising and marketing of literature and offering readers strategies for engaging it. This level of success has allowed Oprah to accomplish one of her ultimate goals: to make her book club “the biggest book club in the world and get people reading again.” This course will explore the phenomenon of OBC, thinking through its formation and rise as well as its strategies and approaches to literature. What methods does the book club employ to make literature accessible to a mass televisual audience, and how does Oprah engage issues of race, gender, sexuality, and class with her readers and viewers? How does OBC serve as a litmus test for the ongoing debates between highbrow and lowbrow literary cultures? In what way does the book club figure Oprah as the arbiter of literary taste, and what kind of backlash does she receive as a Black female mogul? Why has OBC had such an enduring influence on the literary marketplace, and how does the club turn the private act of reading into something public and communal? We will tackle these matters and questions as we discuss secondary sources that map out various parts of OBC’s trajectory and as we examine closely themes of racial beauty, sexual assault, racism, imprisonment, disability, and politics in OBC- selected texts, such as Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye, Ernest Gaines’s A Lesson before Dying, and Michelle Obama’s Becoming.

Os temas do Jornalismo Esportivo incluem a cobertura de eventos (Jogos Olímpicos, Copas do Mundo, campeonatos, competições, treinos, contratações de jogadores e técnicos), as instituições que geram produtos e fatos (comitês olímpicos, federações esportivas, clubes, torcidas), as políticas públicas para a área (Ministério do Esporte, secretarias do Esporte, construções de estádios, quadras e áreas de lazer) e o dia-a-dia do setor. A partir de pesquisas bibliográficas e documentais, verificou-se que: os investimentos midiáticos, sejam no local ou no global, levam em consideração a realidade cultural, econômica, social, política e tecnológica do alvo que se quer atingir, tendo como meta o lucro; a regionalização é fundamental para atender a necessidade do público preocupado com as raízes e excelente negócio para a mídia; a internacionalização midiática se dá por que não existem barreiras para o poderio midiático que ultrapassa territórios e legislações; cabe às instituições científicas estudar a mídia brasileira, verificando como se expande e mantém seu domínio. Além de entender o local, os investimentos em novas tecnologias, que levam equipamentos à casa do brasileiro, também são fundamentais para o poderio.
