Entry level wines with the simple Bordeaux or Bordeaux Supérieur appelations are produced throughout the Gironde département in south-western France. On the left bank of the Gironde, i.e. the Médoc and Haut-Médoc, Cabernet-Sauvignon sets the tone with wines of finesse and structure. On the right bank, notably in the St Emilion and Pomerol regions, Merlot calls the shots with wines of a more muscular and hearty style.
