Our . Our Story.

A message from the President and CEO of the

Looking back through the history of this hospital, I am reminded of how far we have come as a result of only a few who dared to dream for many. It is with a gentle nudge that we must never fear to envision a great future. As Franklin D. Roosevelt once said, “The only limit of our realization of tomorrow will be our doubts of today. Let us move forward with strong and active faith.”

The tomorrows of will be vastly different than what we have known in the past and the actions we take now will greatly impact the role and the direction of future generations. Medical technology and is moving faster today that it has ever moved in history and it is a struggle to keep pace. Our greatest challenge of the present is to continue to be strong in the pursuit of excellence while remaining financially secure in a rapidly evolving world.

But without fail, the obstacles we face are the same elements that propel us forward.

The Hospital has always tried to be proactive in its response to the ever-changing needs of the community and now more than ever, we need our community to share our foresight and to stand behind us as we move ahead. We have big dreams for our hospital - and big changes – but we know of one thing that will stand firm and unchanging. That is our commitment to one and other.

We invite you to share our future…and contribute to our success.

Sincerely,

D. J. Peters, P. Eng President and CEO Horizon Health Network

The Moncton Hospital is located in Moncton, , the hub of the Maritimes. With a population of more than 126,000 people, Moncton is the fastest growing area of the province and is continually recognized for its thriving cultural scene, excellent quality of life and a booming economy.

Situated in the centre of this vibrant and friendly city, The Moncton Hospital is a leader in health care delivery and health promotion. New Brunswick is the only officially bilingual Canadian province and patients may receive services in their language of choice: French or English. The Moncton Hospital is a centre of excellence and is renowned for its success in

many areas:

 With the addition of the Irving Neurosciences , the hospital continues to be amongst 's leading centres for and . The Moncton Hospital has made great strides in Neurointerventional radiology. This minimally invasive surgery to treat brain aneurysms can now be done with a single groin puncture via radiological guidance. Halifax and Moncton are the only sites in Atlantic Canada doing these procedures.

 The Moncton Hospital is known for specialty services in critical care that include: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit; Pediatric Intensive Care Unit; Medical/Surgical Intensive Care Unit; Coronary Intensive Care Unit; Provincial Child and Adolescent Psychiatric

Unit and the Burn Unit.

3  The Moncton Hospital is a leader in the province for the most active advanced-stage (cancer) services. In fact, TMH has one of the highest volumes for medical oncology (chemotherapy) in the province supported by the clinical trials research

program.

 More than 16,000 patients are admitted annually and there are about 4,000 inpatient surgeries and 11,000 day surgeries per year.

 Another area of pride is the Northumberland Family Practice teaching program, a satellite site of ’s Family Medicine program which trains family physicians. The program has evolved over the past ten years from training three residents per year, to having seven family physicians graduate each year. On that note, the Dalhousie Medicine New Brunswick program, an innovative new take on medical training that will allow New Brunswick medical students to train in their home province, is taking off in the fall of 2010 with the first students entering the program based in Saint John in September. The Moncton Hospital will play a major role in this new program in 2012, when students, for the first time, start attending studies here as well. The hospital and Horizon Health Network are preparing for the future physicians

by putting in place necessary infrastructure to house the program

 In the area of vascular interventional radiology, our physicians are able to treat abdominal aortic aneurysms without surgery. This makes an enormous impact for the patient as he/she can be discharged after 1-2 days with reduced morbidity and mortality.  We are proud of the fact that TMH has three board certified Thoracic Surgeons. Our hospital has the largest volume of lung cancer and esophageal surgeries in the Maritimes next to Halifax.  In maternal fetal medicine, TMH is a tertiary referral center for prenatal screening.  Another interesting fact is that several of our physicians took additional training at the fellowship level, but wished to practice at The Moncton Hospital. These fellowship trainings are in the fields of breast cancer, pediatric ENT (Ear, Nose & Throat), orthopedics, thoracic surgery and interventional radiology.

4 The Moncton Hospital is full of stories of pain and

triumph, sadness and hope, joy and miracles.

Many of you have entered the doors of The Moncton Hospital (TMH) at one time or another……. to visit a sick friend, welcome a new baby to the family, or receive medical attention yourself. By walking around the hospital, it is easy to discover what an amazing health facility is in our community and what extraordinary tools donor contributions have accomplished. All gifts to TMH are funnelled through the Friends of The Moncton Hospital Foundation.

At the top of the list is the new Emergency and Trauma Department (one of two trauma centres in New Brunswick) which opened its doors in late 2009. This modern centre, designed to improve patient care, is part of a $47-million ambulatory care centre addition, which includes a state-of-the-art laboratory, 18 clinics, a new ambulance entrance and underground parking. The primary focus of the new ambulatory care centre – which was officially opened in March 2010- is to provide health services to outpatients, or patients not admitted to hospital. This project marks the largest capital investment in TMH since it was built more than 50 years ago. The new ER, Trauma Department has significantly improved health-care services by offering patients a modern facility with the latest equipment, technology and design. A portion of the $7.5 million raised through the Friends Foundation’s Healthy Returns Capital Campaign funded equipment for the department. The next phase will be the re-development of the new Intensive Care Unit which will get underway in 2011.

“”We know this wouldn’t be possible without the TMH serves patients from and all of New Brunswick. It Friends Foundation is also part of the provincial trauma network, and it is an important and our loyal donors… the lab staff referral centre for patients from and northern Nova is extremely grateful.” Dr. Sarah Colwell, Scotia. There are more than 55,000 visits each year.

Chief of Laboratory Medicine

Did you know that the lab at TMH touches virtually every aspect of patient care? Clinical Laboratory Services is another area where donors have made a significant impact. The labs new home, located in the new ambulatory care centre, marks an enormous improvement from the lab’s old home…a cramped space on the ground floor of TMH. New revolutionary tools, $500,000 worth (from Healthy Return funds) has enabled the lab to become more efficient. The laboratory, which performs 2.5 million tests per year, is arguably one of The 5 Moncton Hospital’s most important services. The new lab has many behind the scenes advantages to patient care, one being that new technologies will allow for smaller amounts of patient blood to be taken.

Contributions have enabled the purchase of thousands of dollars worth of critical equipment to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NNICU). These high tech tools help keep our tiniest patients alive. One of our biggest supporters for this unit is Harrison Trimble High School whose students have raised in excess of $100,000 for sick babies.

Our supporters paid for a state- of- the- art minimally invasive surgical suite which will be in place in late fall 2010. This technology can mean less time in the operating room and less trauma from surgery, which allows patients to go home sooner. This technology is the most advanced in Atlantic Canada.

Donor dollars, $1.1 million to be exact, played a key role in improved breast cancer screening services at the Katherine Wright Centre (KWC) (now located at the Professional Arts Building on Arden Street) which houses two modern digital mammography units for screening. Another unit, used for diagnostic purposes, is up and running in the Medical Imaging Department. These three new digital mammography machines are helping to dramatically decrease wait lists for breast screening. The wait times have already been cut by more than half!

The Technology for Campaign raised more than $470,000 to purchase critical and updated components for the Urology Department that allow health care professionals to more accurately and rapidly determine a patient’s diagnosis. As a result The Moncton Hospital was successful in recruiting a third and much needed Urologist. These are just a few examples of what the Friends of The Moncton Hospital Foundation has achieved over the years; there is virtually no area untouched by the generosity of the community.

In addition to new equipment, the Friends provides close to $30,000 a year to staff for continuing educational opportunities.

Currently, the Foundation raises over $3 million per year for The Moncton Hospital. Over the past 10 years in excess of $23 million has been raised.

6 It is through these generous gifts that the Foundation is able to make a direct and lasting impact at The Moncton Hospital ensuring quality health care for our community - for now and for the future.

GRATEFUL PATIENTS

“I spent a long time on the 4400, Rehabilitation Unit in The Moncton Hospital, after a very bad accident that should have left me paralyzed at the age of 26. Thanks to Dr. Weiss, Dr. Daigle, and Dr. Guy Leblanc, and others, I am now a functioning member of society and even have my own business.

The community has to realize how important this area of medicine is to all people, I sure didn't at 26 years old. It happens when we least expect it. With the help of all the staff, right down to the security guards, they make you feel at home, even in your darkest of days.

I cried the day I had to leave because I was unsure what was on the outside waiting for me, and to leave the only friends that I had left, who were all inside my ward was very difficult. Everyone made me feel better every time I came back for physiotherapy and helped me to become the man I am today.

I will be forever grateful to all staff and Doctors there, from the bottom of my heart. Thank you! Kevin S. Leblanc Linda Banks had a gut feeling before her routine mammogram in May, 2005…. “well I am a nurse and when they told me I had a lump, I somehow just knew it was cancer,” -unfortunately her instinct was right.

Still with disbelief, Linda says she attended chemotherapy and radiation treatments together with two co-workers and long-time friends (they had graduated from their nursing program together, 30 years ago), Linda’s first mammogram after all this unfortunately showed the presence of pre-cancerous cells in her other breast which they treated aggressively with radiation and with successful results!

Today, the prognosis is good for Linda, who has since returned to The Moncton Hospital where she works, with optimism and hope for her future health. She however very quickly adds “the outcome has always been positive and I know it has everything to do with early detection. As a

7 breast cancer survivor AND a nurse, I encourage all women to follow through with their routine check-ups- it could just very well save their lives.” Banks was thrilled when the Friends raised, $1.1 million for improved breast cancer screening services at the Katherine Wright Centre (KWC).

"As a liver transplant patient who has been in and out of the GI Unit for various tests for over 20 years, I know first hand the importance of having state of the art equipment. I used to feel uneasy about some of the tests I had to undergo, but the technology has changed so much since I was first diagnosed with primary sclerosing cholangitis. I don't worry at all…..they are usually quick and painless. I am so thankful to the Friends for its role in enhancing GI services.

Bertille Demers, Liver Transplant Patient

At age 56, Arthur McGinnis was in the prime of his life when the least expected happened. The aortic artery burst and he needed a valve replacement operation which was conducted in Saint John. He was then transported to TMH for recovery and educational support. “Everybody was wonderful; I felt like the doctors and nurses were my friends and that I was brought back to life because the exceptional care I received,” Arthur was most impressed with the sincerity of the staff. “They participated with their heart and gave me the strength and positive outlook I needed to move forward. I am thankful for the Cardiology Department at The Moncton Hospital and am thankful for the Cardiac Assessment Clinic.”

10 History – The Story of the Friends

In 1965, the Friends of The Moncton Hospital Foundation Inc., was formed through the interest and leadership of a group of committed individuals who had a primary goal of helping TMH to raise funds in support of better health care. Since the formation of the Foundation, hundreds of individuals have served the Foundation through a variety of volunteer roles. Whether as a Friends’ Board or committee member, a canvasser or a provider of administrative support, volunteers have been central to the Foundation’s success. Our hospital staff pride themselves on the exemplary care they are capable of providing because of the generosity of our donors. We can assure our donors that their dollars have gone to help a patient in need, right here in our community.

Mission: The Friends of The Moncton Hospital Foundation raises funds to help The Moncton Hospital deliver excellent health care and promote wellness.
