The story is also about the young poet Wilfred Owen (Stuart Bunce) whose support from Sassoon enabled him to write poetry encapsulating the horrors of the First World War. Rivers is tormented by doubt about the morality of what is being done in the name of medicine. It focuses on showcasing how the traditionally patriarchal society of late-Victorian and Edwardian Britain educated its youth to follow unrealistic models of masculinity which privileged the suppression of emotion and tenderness, while promoting violence. The imperial agenda during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries created a generation of males who believed in the “Great Adventure” of war and imagined it as a glorious event, where men were supposed to show their virility and honour in defence of western values. -

Yebra Universidad de Zaragoza Abstract The present article analyses the first part of Pat Barker’s trilogy Regeneration (1991-1995), of the same title. It is set in the First World War and turns around the encounter between psychiatrist E. M. Rivers and War poet Siegfried Sassoon when the latter suffers from shell shock and publishes a complaint against the war politics of the British government. From the analysis of Sassoon’s Declaration, my main contention is that the novel addresses the liminal territory between “truth” and “lying” when representing and memorialising a traumatic event like WWI. In the second part, I delve into the poetics of psychoanalysis and (poetic) language as the narratives Barker uses to articulate the rapport between generations: fathers furthering a war in which their sons are involved. With this in mind, the paper analyses their oedipal conflict, as well as that between healer (Rivers) and trauma victim (Sassoon) both at a personal and national level. This analysis attempts to trace the concepts of latency, post-traumatic stress disorders, traumatic memory, and trauma in Barker’s novel in order to explore how trauma and history are interrelated in the narrative of past history and, particularly, in the history of World War I. The present paper also demonstrates how Barker’s novel Regeneration acts as the narrative of trauma that vocalizes the silenced history of shell-shocked soldiers of World War I to represent British society, the history that has been concealed due to social and individual factors. The study thus investigates the dissociative disorders which are experienced by traumatized survivors of World War I as the aftermath of traumatic experiences of wartime. In addition, it argues how time moves for the traumatized victim and how the notion of latency in terms of Caruth’s theory is traceable in Barker’s novel. In Regeneration, the traumatized survivors are haunted with traumatic memory of past history; furthermore, past history constantly disrupts their present and the victims are in continuous shift from present time to past time. -

The Ghost Road
Chapter IV THE GHOST ROAD The Ghost Road is the third in a trilogy of novels by Pat Barker, about the First World War, having been preceded by Regeneration and The Eye in the Door. The Ghost Road is a novel published in 1995 and winner of the prestigious Bocker Prize. It is the third volume of the trilogy that follows the fortunes of shell-shocked British army officers towards the end of the First World War. A. Plot: Like Regeneration, The Ghost Road is, for the most part, set back of the front lines, primarily in the Scottish mental hospital, Craiglockhart, where officers suffering from shell-shock are patched together to be sent back to the trenches of France again. Also like the first volume of the trilogy, its characters are both fictional figures, principally Billy Prior, a bisexual lieutenant of working-class origins, and real life ones, such as the poet-soldiers like Wilfred Owen, Siegfried Sassoon and Dr. W. H. R. Rivers, an anthropologist and psychiatrist. The novel moves even further from the front lines, all the way to Melanesia in the Pacific,, where Dr. Rivers went ten years before in 1908. Dr. Rivers, the psychologist who treats Billy and others, remembers the anthropological research he did in Melanesia among the tribes that once were head-hunters until that practice was outlawed by colonial administrators. This allows him to make some nicely understated •• 66 comparisons between the two war-obsessed societies, i.e. European and Melanesian. Each in its way, Europe and Melanesia, worships the dead. Each finds its own rationale for killing. -

29 MICHAEL SZCZEKALLA, Greifswald The War Novels of Pat Barker: Towards a 'Poetics of Cruelty' The Regeneration Trilogy (1991-95) established Pat Barker as Britain's leading writer of war fiction. Her portrait of Siegfried Sassoon, who dominates the first volume of the Trilogy, offers a clue to a moral dilemma that besets all war literature including her own. Though Barker has rightly been dubbed her country's "foremost excavator of the human cost of war" (Miller 2003), she too faces the difficulty of having to avoid the writer's complicity with the perpetrators as she must thrive on what they have done. An écriture feminine exposing the male propensity to violence offers no real solution to this dilemma. It is only by means of a highly developed literary con- sciousness as shown in the Trilogy, but also in Another World (1998) and in Life Class (2007), two further books about the Great War, or in Double Vision (2003), whose protagonist is a war photographer returning from Afghanistan, that she has come to grips with the challenges of writing about human carnage. This essay assesses the extent to which the result may be described as a contribu- tion to the feminization of literature. Unlike many male predecessors, who tried to alter our perception of warfare, Barker has attempted something much more ambi- tious. Her meticulously researched and beautifully crafted novels are studies in the fragility of our civilisation – past and present. Though Border Crossing (2001), which contains the story of a child murderer, marks a (temporary) return to civil life, there is no denying that the First World War lends itself particularly well to such an undertaking.
