THE NATIONAL ACADEMY of TELEVISION ARTS & SCIENCES ANNOUNCES WINNERS of the 35Th ANNUAL SPORTS EMMY® AWARDS Ted Turner FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF TELEVISION ARTS & SCIENCES ANNOUNCES WINNERS OF THE 35th ANNUAL SPORTS EMMY® AWARDS Ted Turner Receives the Lifetime Achievement Award for Sports New York, NY – May 6, 2014 – The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) announced the winners of the 35th Annual Sports Emmy® Awards at a special ceremony tonight at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall in New York City. Winners in 39 categories including Outstanding Live Sports Special, Live Series, Sports Documentary, Studio Show, Promotional Announcements, Play-by-Play Personality, Studio Analyst and three new categories honoring Spanish-speaking programming and talent. The awards were presented by a distinguished group of sports figures and television personalities including Al Leiter and Harold Reynolds (studio analysts, “MLB Tonight,” MLB Network); Ron Darling (analyst tbs); Joe Buck (play by play announcer, Fox Sports) and Michael Strahan, (studio analyst, “Fox NFL Sunday”); Michael Irvin (studio analyst, NFL Network); Hannah Storm (studio host, ESPN); Gary Danielson (event analyst, “SEC on CBS”); David Feherty (host & golf analyst, Golf Channel & CBS); Jim Lampley (Host, “HBO Boxing”); Claudio Reyna (former US Men’s Soccer Team Captain); and Julius Erving, “Dr. J” (former NBA All-Star and Hall of Fame member). The Sports Emmy® Award recipients were chosen by a Blue Ribbon Panel of industry peers. If I were a professional ballplayer, these are attributes I'd hope to display. William Julius Johnson. Judy. What an honor to bear his name. But I’m not that Judy Johnson. I’m an English teacher, ordinary fan, mother of three children who love baseball. One of those kids slept peacefully in my arms on a long escalator ride to the top of Candlestick Park in August 1986. My firstborn son was six weeks old, and I had to show him the game, and the visiting team. I had to show him my Mets. Three summers later we sat in 95-degree heat, 8 rows from the tippy top of Shea Stadium, all sticky with Dove Bar and beer. My boy was with me on the night that Number 8 kept Game 6 alive. When it was all over, I jumped up and down on the bed - “They won! The Mets won!” - and twirled my baby around the room, screaming, “I can’t believe they won!” A few months later that tiny child spoke one of his first words: Mookie. I cannot boast vast quantities of baseball knowledge or memorabilia, but a few Mets items have taken up residence in my home: a plastic chip-and-dip plate in the shape of a baseball glove molded in orange and royal blue.

The New York Times By BEN SHPIGEL Published: March 30, 2008 At Shea Stadium, five dollars sometimes covers the cost of a seat way at the top of the upper deck but not the Sherpa to lug the oxygen tanks. The view is comparable to that from the ubiquitous low-flying planes, whose passengers, if so inclined, could reach out the window and take a bite from your Italian sausage. Buying another one would involve navigating a concourse roughly the width of a coffee table and sidestepping the bathroom line that started forming five innings earlier. By any objective standard, Shea is bleak and outdated. It has not aged, shall we say, gracefully, its imperfections and architectural shortcomings growing more prominent over the years, particularly as glorious baseball-only parks have sprouted around the country. Those flaws are now magnified by Citi Field, the Mets’ new home in 2009, whose beatific presence beyond Shea’s right-center-field fence prompted Ron Darling, the SportsNet New York analyst and former Met, to make this comparison: “It’s like driving a VW bus with a Maserati in the lot.” Of the municipally owned, multipurpose, symmetrical eyesores that sprung up in the 1960s and early ’70s, Shea was the first to arrive, preceding those concrete monstrosities in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Cincinnati and now, alas, it is one of the last to go; after this season, it will be dismantled to clear parking space for Citi Field.
