  • The Cinema of Derek Jarman and Humphrey Jennings’
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MUSEUM OF THE MOVING IMAGE PRESENTS ‘POETS OF PANDAEMONIUM: THE CINEMA OF DEREK JARMAN AND HUMPHREY JENNINGS’ February 8–17, 2019 Astoria, New York, January 23, 2019—From February 8 through 17, 2019, Museum of the Moving Image will present Poets of Pandaemonium: The Cinema of Derek Jarman and Humphrey Jennings, a partial dual retrospective that allows these two English filmmakers’ work to be experienced in juxtaposition. Jennings (1907–1950) was a pioneering documentarian who captured life during wartime and the immediate postwar period, while Jarman’s (1942–1994) iconoclastic films addressed late- twentieth-century queer life. Organized by guest curator Max Carpenter, the screening series looks at the two directors—and their reactions to the external and internal turmoils of their ages—through seven pairings. Of particular note, this February marks 25 years since Jarman’s death. Many of the films will be presented in rare imported 35mm prints and restored DCPs. The series will also be presented at Harvard Film Archive from January 25 through February 11. The films of Humphrey Jennings and Derek Jarman are separated by a gulf of decades, decades in which their native Britain metamorphosed from a world power into a melancholy little island. They were both radical in their employment of audiovisual montage, non-professional actors, and their frequent use of recited poetry, though Jennings utilized these techniques in the espousal of his signature brand of optimistic patriotism, while Jarman was preoccupied by the psychological strife of late-twentieth- century queer life. The two artists shared a detached skepticism of the cinematic medium; as dually accomplished abstract painters, skilled theatrical designers, and acclaimed authors, they saw the cinema as only one facet of their voluminous oeuvres.

  • Bamcinématek Presents Queer Pagan Punk: the Films of Derek Jarman, Oct 30—Nov 11
BAMcinématek presents Queer Pagan Punk: The Films of Derek Jarman, Oct 30—Nov 11 A complete retrospective of Jarman’s 12 feature films, the most comprehensive New York series in nearly two decades New restorations of debut feature Sebastiane and Caravaggio “It feels like the correct time to be reminded of an ancient tradition that has always served civilization well, that of the independent, truth-telling poet provocateur.”—Tilda Swinton The Wall Street Journal is the title sponsor for BAMcinématek and BAM Rose Cinemas. Brooklyn, NY/Sep 30, 2014—From Thursday, October 30 through Tuesday, November 11, BAMcinématek presents Queer Pagan Punk: The Films of Derek Jarman, a comprehensive retrospective of iconoclastic British filmmaker and crusading gay rights activist Derek Jarman, following its run at the BFI this spring. Jarman not only redefined queer cinema, but reimagined moviemaking as a means for limitless personal expression. From classical adaptations to historical biographies to avant-garde essay films, he crafted a body of work that was at once personal and political, during a difficult period when British independent cinema was foundering and the AIDS crisis provoked a wave of panic and homophobia. Also a poet, diarist, and painter, Jarman first entered the realm of the movies as a production designer for Ken Russell. The Devils (1971—Oct 31), Russell’s controversial opus of repressed nuns and witchcraft trials, played out in a 17th-century French village that Jarman spent a year creating. His own first feature, Sebastiane (1976—Nov 9), playing in a new restoration, placed a daring emphasis on male nudity and eroticism as it chronicled the death of the Christian martyr; Jarman called it “the first film that depicted homosexuality in a completely matter-of-fact way.” A time-traveling Queen Elizabeth I wanders among the ruins of a dystopic modern London in Jubilee (1978—Oct 30), a shot-in-the-streets survey of the burgeoning punk scene that captures early performances by Adam Ant, Wayne County, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and the Slits.

  • Jarman Volume Two 1987-1994 6-Disc Limited Edition Blu-Ray Box Set Released on 25 February 2019
Jarman Volume Two 1987-1994 6-disc Limited Edition Blu-ray box set released on 25 February 2019 19 February 2019 will mark 25 years since Derek Jarman’s untimely death at just 52, but the legacy of this iconoclastic filmmaker lives on. The BFI’s second Limited Edition Blu-ray collection, a lavishly packaged 6-disc box set, brings together Jarman’s last six features, made in the prolonged burst of creativity and political activism that followed his HIV diagnosis in 1987. All the films are presented in High Definition for the first time in the UK and range from the audacious anger of The Last of England (1987) to the astonishing experimentation of Blue (1993). Also included is Jarman’s posthumously-released elegy to Super 8, Glitterbug (1994), along with an incredible 66 special features – both new and archival, plus trailers, image galleries of rare stills and promotional materials and a 100- page perfect bound book of essays, film credits and more. Derek Jarman’s multi-faceted work is inspirational in its fearlessness, yet remains touchingly personal. The dynamism of these features evokes comparison with the bold romanticism of directors like Ken Russell (an early champion) and Michael Powell, as well as artists Paul Nash and John Piper. Jarman Volume Two 1987-1994 is a celebration of one of the world’s most unique filmmakers. The films included are: The Last of England (1987) with Tilda Swinton War Requiem (1989) with Nathaniel Parker, Tilda Swinton, Laurence Olivier The Garden (1990) with Tilda Swinton Edward II (1991) with Steven Waddington, Andrew Tierman, Tilda Swinton Wittgenstein (1993) with Karl Johnson, Michael Gough, Tilda Swinton Blue (1993) contributing musicians include Simon Fisher Turner, Coil, Scanner and Brian Eno Glitterbug (1994) with Adam Ant, Andrew Logan, Toyah Willcox, Marianne Faithfull, William S Burroughs, Genesis P-Orridge and Tilda Swinton The special features include ten newly recorded interviews with a variety of Jarman’s collaborators, eight archival interviews, two audio commentaries and six image galleries.

"2 "1 am obsessed by the interpretation ofthe past."3 Derek Michael Jarman, geboren am 3 I. I. Ein mutiger und tollkühner, sogar auch ein hu morvoller und witziger Emphatiker und Polemiker."4 In England wird er auch als Magier bezeichnet, die New York Times hält ihn u.a. für einen ästhetischen Pornographen. • Introduction and Overview of Jarman's Film Output
Born Michael Derek Elworthy Jarman in Northwood, Middlesex, on 31 January 1942, Derek Jarman attended Kings College, London and the Slade School of Fine Art. His art studies can be traced through to his later aesthetic, but his first work in cinema came when, after a period working in theatre design, Jarman was invited to work as a set designer on Ken Russell’s The Devils and Savage Messiah. Having begun making his own experimental films on a Super 8 camera in the early 1970s, Jarman’s first feature film was the low-budget Sebastiane (1976, co-director Paul Humfress), shot in Sardinia for just £30,000. Set at a military outpost and concerning St Sebastian’s martyrdom and denial of his love for his commanding officer, the film forged a template for Jarman’s subsequent career, focusing on an outsider figure. Sebastiane’s denial conflicts with the film’s overall aesthetic and emphasis on homosexual imagery – another constant in Jarman’s artistic output. Well received by critics, Sebastiane also sparked controversy for reportedly being the first British film to feature an erect penis. Jarman’s next venture, Jubilee (1978) enjoyed the distinction of a Parliamentary mention. A fiercely anti-establishment work that depicts a post-punk vision of a social wasteland, the film follows Elizabeth I and her court astrologer John Dee as they travel forward in time to contemporary England. Made in the wake of Queen Elizabeth II’s silver jubilee, it is an outspoken, angry and urgent vision of a country searching for modemity but mired in decline.
