Pan African Human- ity refers to the embodiment of values, mores, norms and character of an African in relations to others. Te paradigm shif that Adesanmi represented in Pan African Humanity is informed by his life-long commitment to work for the restoration of the above qualities through the development of a new cadre of African intellectuals who take pride in their own humanity, are socially and politically conscious, com- mitted to excellence in both professional and public spaces with enough concern for building a better African society. While the distinctive features of Pan African Humanity are still cherished by Africans, many of these have been lost due to the degradation, distortion, pollution and disruption that Africans have had with other parts of the world, the resulting competition that have come to defne their daily experiences and changes in the global value system. Tis paper is based on experiential personal encounters that the writer had with Pius Adesanmi as well as his numerous updates on social media and literary texts. Te paper will focus on his numerous engagements in mentoring African scholars at various sites, such as the Pan African Doctoral Academy in Accra, Ghana, the Abiola Irele Seminar on Teory and Criticism and the African Doctoral Lounge on Facebook, which he created.

Jeyifo carries out detailed analyses of Soyinka’s most ambitious works, relating them to the controversies generated by Soyinka’s use of literature and theatre for radical political purposes. He gives a fascinating account of the profound but paradoxical affinities and misgivings Soyinka has felt about the significance of the avant-garde movements of the twentieth century. ABIOLA IRELE If there is any single work that can be considered central to the evolving canon of modern African literature, it is, without question, Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart. The novel owes this distinction to the innovative significance it assumed as soon as it was published, a significance that was manifested in at least two respects. In the first place, the novel provided an image of an African society, reconstituted as a living entity and in its historic circumstance: an image of a coherent social structure forming the institutional fabric of a universe of meanings and values. Because this image of Africa was quite unprecedented in literature, it also carried considerable ideological weight in the specific context of the novel's writing and reception. For it cannot be doubted that the comprehensive scope of Achebe's depiction of a particularized African community engaged in its own social processes, carried out entirely on its own terms, with all the internal tensions this entailed, challenged the simplified representation that the West offered itself of Africa as a formless area of life, as "an area of darkness" devoid of human significance.1 Thus, beyond what might be considered its ethnographic interest, which gave the work an immediate and ambiguous appeal--a point to which we shall return--Achebe's novel articulated a new vision of the African world and gave expression to a new sense of the African experience that was more penetrating than what had been available before its appearance.

    A Portrait J.P. Clark was born at his maternal grandmother’s home in the Urhobo village of Erhuwaren on the 6th of December 1933 into two old Izon families, Bekederemo and Adomi, of Kiagbodo, now in the Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State, Nigeria. After his early education at the Native Administration Schools, Okrika and Jeremi (Otughievwen), in the western Niger delta, he went on to Government College, Ughelli and the University College, Ibadan, both by entrance examinations, as a Government Scholar and State Scholar. The poet, playwright and scholar early showed his genius and calling in life. At Ughelli, distinguished for sports and scholarship under the legendary V.B. V. Powell, he earned himself a reputation for reading every English literature title in the school library, and so his next principal, Major Cyril Carter, kindly allowed him the use of his personal library as he received new titles from the Readers’ Union in London. But it was at Ibadan, where Clark read English, that the bud bloomed into the flower that immediately caught the eye of the public. He became editor of the Students’ Union magazine The Beacon, and then, most significantly, the first editor of The Horn, the poetry journal at the University College, Ibadan, that launched modern Nigerian poetry in English. It introduced Christopher Okigbo and Wole Soyinka, Clark being the major contributor. His poem Ivbie, on the wrong of imperial power, beginning with the slave trade, created a great stir among staff and students. Others like Abiku, Agbor Dancer, Fulani Cattle, Ibadan, Night Rain, Olokun, Streamside Exchange and The Water Maid, were recited at sight across faculties on the campus, later becoming favourites in anthologies.

Docteur de l’Université de Paris (Sorbonne) en 1966, directeur du Département des langues vivantes et premier titulaire de la chaire de français à l’Université d’Ibadan, professeur de littérature, pédagogue, chercheur obstiné et fécond, auteur de nombreux ouvrages, il aura marqué de son empreinte des générations d’étudiants, de professeurs, de formateurs et d’universitaires qui ont eu l’honneur et le privilège de suivre ses cours ou d’assister à ses conférences. Le Professeur Abiola Irele a constamment œuvré au rapprochement entre les gens, les peuples et les cultures. Il avait le sens du partage de ses connaissances immenses dans de nombreux domaines, de l’idée qu’il se faisait de la vie et des relations humaines. Véronique Tadjo nous rappelle qu’ « il a consacré sa vie au renforcement des liens entre les littératures africaines anglophone et francophone. Ro 1and Ba rthes2 The primary impulses that generated this paper are remotely traceable to Wole Soyinka's 1980 Inaugural Lecture at the Uni­ versity of Ife: "The Critic and Society: Barthes, Leftocracy and Other Mythologies." The spectacle was at once familiar and bi­ zarre; the lone actor, in ill-fitting academic costume worn over his habitual Mbari shirt, was playing to a full theatre. The language was characteristically opaque and obfuscatory even though the author of Myth, Literature and the African World 3 was arguing a case for a demystified and more accessible language of criticism. The targets of his verbal onslaught were understand­ ably the new crop of Ibadan and Ife-based radical (often Marxist) critics in whose hands Soyinka's works have provided the readi­ est illustration of the ideological contradiction inherent in the use of myth as a vehicle for artistically objectifying social experience and vision.

    Babatunde Ayeleru University of Ibadan, Nigeria Linguistic innovation in the New West African Europhone novel: Between Interlanguage and Indigenization1 Abstract. Writers in West Africa have deployed innovative linguistic strategies to indigenize the language of the new West African novel. The novels of the Beninese writer, Adelaide Fassinou’s Modukpè: Le Reve brisé, Enfant d’autrui, fille de personne and Toute une vie ne suffirait pas pour en parler and the Nigerian author, Abimbola Adunni Adelakun’s Under the Brown Rusted Roofs are analyzed to demonstrate indigenous features that are applied in the European languages in which the novels are written. The paper posits that the language of the two writers is placed between their mother tongue, the Yoruba language, and the European languages (French and English) which they use to create their literary works. The paper concludes that African orature, translation, transliteration, metaphor, and metonymy constitute the strategies of linguistic innovation and indigenization employed by the writers. 1. Introduction From Obi Wali’s (1963) Makerere outburst, through Ngugi’s (1981) Marxist idealist position to Achebe’s (1965) moderate stance, African writers have been deploying different strategies to manipulate the European languages with which they create their texts. Language issue in African literatures has attracted an array of critical discourses by writers and critics such as Niyi Osundare (1983, 1984, 1995), Ahmadou Kourouma (1970, 1978), Gassama, Makhily (1995), Chantal Zabus (1991, 2007), Blachere, Jean-Claude (1993), Adewole Adejare (1992, 1998), Kayode Omole (1998), Bill Ashcroft (1998, 2001), Anatole Mbanga (1999), Herbert Igboanusi (2002), Femi Osofisan (2006), Ayo Kehinde (2009), and Jane Bryce (2010).
