Doha-based artist wins at British Muslim News Awards

Doha-based British artist Shahida Ahmed was the winner in London last week at the annual British Muslim News Awards ceremony. Shahida was the recipient of the Alhambra Award for Excellence in the Arts, which was presented to her by the Sajid Javid, British Cabinet Minister for Communities and Local Government. There were messages from the Prime minister of the UK Teresa May and other civic leaders who celebrated the contribution that British Muslims have made to the multiculturalism of the UK. Shahida, who divides her time between the UK and the Middle East, is currently Head of Art at Al Jazeera Academy and is currently working closely with the Ministry of Education to develop a capsule scheme of work to engage Qatari students in the upper years of high school. The education of young upcoming Qatari artists in this country plays a significant role in building a society which is creating future leaders. Shahida states that “as a western artist, I felt it was very important to represent Islamic art in my work to the Western world as I feel art is a universal dialogue”. Her installations works to date have been exhibited in Katara, the Islamic Museum of Australia and Sharjah Museum. Her latest work, titled the new Dervish, which has been exhibited in Lebanon and UK, explores the concept of spinning and the part it plays in the purification process. Shahida who was born in the UK, is a vibrant member of the British Muslim community and was one of the first Muslim female Councilors in the North West of England. Her work captures the dialogue that many artists currently find themselves as they lead global interconnected lives. Shahida’s work is scheduled to be shown later this year at the Karachi Biennale.

Dame Vera Lynn

Dame Vera Lynn has set a new UK chart record. Having recently celebrated her 100th birthday, the lady dubbed ‘The Forces Sweetheart’ during World War II became the oldest living artist to register a top ten album when Vera Lynn 100 debuted at number three. She already held the record as the oldest living artist to have a top 20 album. This mark was established in 2014 when National Treasure – Ultimate Collection peaked at number 13. Dame Vera is also the oldest living artist to have a UK chart-topping album. In 2009, when she was 92, We’ll Meet Again: The Very Best of Vera Lynn hit the number one spot. “I’ve been truly overwhelmed by the response to my album,” smiled a delighted Dame Vera. “It was wonderful to have the good wishes of so many people for my 100th birthday. My album entering the chart at number three is like the icing on my birthday cake.” Her additional success has been largely ignored. While all the attention has understandably been focused on the enormous popularity of Vera Lynn 100, Dame Vera also has a second new album in the chart. Her Greatest from Abbey Road, a 23-track compilation which boasts five previously unreleased recordings, entered the UK listings at number 45. FORCEFUL: Depeche Mode tackle the question for whatever happened to the values of humanity, fairness and equality in their latest album.

Iggy Azalea’s sophomore album, Digital Distortion, is set to be issued later this year. It was originally scheduled for release last July. The fact that lead single, Team, peaked Depeche Mode in search at a relatively lowly number 42 on Billboard’s Hot 100 had nothing to do with the delay. Events in Iggy’s personal life rendered some of the album tracks anything from inappropriate to meaningless. “I wrote the songs when I was about to get married,” Iggy of the Spirit of humanity stated. “After ending my engagement (to Los Angeles Lakers basketball star Nick Young), I wanted time to myself when I wouldn’t be asked about what happened. these terrible times and fi nd our way back “The problem about songwriting is you I also wanted to replace some of the album tracks with By Geoff rey Rowlands to the right path.” always think your work is great and should new songs written from the perspective of a single girl.” For a band who ask for the seemingly defi nitely be on the album. n an event held at Katara's Opera House, the Doha Community Orchestra joined forces with world renowned soloists Karolina Plickova and Ludovik Kendi from Salzburg's Mozarteum for a joint venture arranged by the Austrian Embassy and the Saracen ICommunity Initiative. Austria's most beloved and prolifi c composer was showcased in a two-hour concert. The evening captured the playfulness of Mozart's music, along with the serious, emotional depth of his slower arias in a selection of extracts from Don Giovanni, Le Nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro) and Die Zauberfl ote (The Magic Flute). Members of the Orchestra said they were “absolutely delighted” to be given the opportunity to perform with visiting singers of such high calibre and quite a rapport was built up at the fi rst rehearsal with the singers who brought each aria to life for the group, some of whom are school children and have never heard an opera before. Brita Fray, conductor of the DCO, worked with the orchestra in special sectional rehearsals, doubling the usual rehearsal time so the orchestra were really given the opportunity to shine. The soloists commented that it was "a pleasure to be able to make music together here in this beautiful city". Austrian ambassador Willy Kempel said that the orchestra “out-played themselves” and is looking forward to future collaborations. The Doha Community Orchestra is a full-sized symphony orchestra based in Doha since 2005, comprising of community members living, working or studying in Doha.
