Kim: Harm Reduction and Substance Use: Examining the Politics and Policy Impacts (Under the direction of Krista M. Perreira) This dissertation evaluates the impacts and political dynamics of harm reduction policies concerning substance use in North America. In doing so, this three-essay dissertation focuses on two substance use policies: medical marijuana laws (MMLs) and supervised injection services (SISs). The first two essays evaluate the unintended impacts that result from the implementation of MMLs in the U.S. The first essay evaluates the impact of state-level MML implementation and specific policy dimensions (i.e., dispensaries, patient registries, and in-home cultivation) in the U.S. on non-drug related arrest rates and crime rates for violent and property crimes. The second essay analyzes the effect of each MML policy dimension on the probability of cigarette smoking among U.S. adults. Considered together, these two essays highlight various unintended downstream impacts that need to be taken into consideration as policymakers adopt and implement MMLs. The third essay is a political evaluation of the barriers to adopting SISs in North America. The dearth of SISs in North America is puzzling considering the wealth of evidence suggesting their effectiveness in preventing overdoses and connecting injection drug users with treatment resources. -
Snakes of the Siwalik Group (Miocene of Pakistan): Systematics and Relationship to Environmental Change
Palaeontologia Electronica http://palaeo-electronica.org SNAKES OF THE SIWALIK GROUP (MIOCENE OF PAKISTAN): SYSTEMATICS AND RELATIONSHIP TO ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE Jason J. Head ABSTRACT The lower and middle Siwalik Group of the Potwar Plateau, Pakistan (Miocene, approximately 18 to 3.5 Ma) is a continuous fluvial sequence that preserves a dense fossil record of snakes. The record consists of approximately 1,500 vertebrae derived from surface-collection and screen-washing of bulk matrix. This record represents 12 identifiable taxa and morphotypes, including Python sp., Acrochordus dehmi, Ganso- phis potwarensis gen. et sp. nov., Bungarus sp., Chotaophis padhriensis, gen. et sp. nov., and Sivaophis downsi gen. et sp. nov. The record is dominated by Acrochordus dehmi, a fully-aquatic taxon, but diversity increases among terrestrial and semi-aquatic taxa beginning at approximately 10 Ma, roughly coeval with proxy data indicating the inception of the Asian monsoons and increasing seasonality on the Potwar Plateau. Taxonomic differences between the Siwalik Group and coeval European faunas indi- cate that South Asia was a distinct biogeographic theater from Europe by the middle Miocene. Differences between the Siwalik Group and extant snake faunas indicate sig- nificant environmental changes on the Plateau after the last fossil snake occurrences in the Siwalik section. Jason J. It is our joy and pleasure to provide your camper with a wildlife adventure like none other. At Zoofari Summer Camp, we plan to provide your camper with an experience that will be fun, exciting, and also educational. We are going to take a walk through a wild winter wonderland as we discuss how animals are equipped to survive the change in their environments throughout the winter season. Along with this packet, you have received a list of camp requirements, camp release form, disciplinary code, list of daily activities, and lunch schedule. Please go over this information with your camper so they are aware of the daily activities and camp expectations. This should help answer some of your questions about our camp. The twenty two samples of monitor from Thailand were differentiated by using Polymerase Chain Reaction-Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) technique, this study worked based on cytochrome b gene and 12S rRNA gene. The PCR products were approximate 376 and 450 bp respectively. The cytochrome b gene products were treated with BstXI, BanI, HpaII and EcoRI , the 12S rRNA gene products were treated with ApaI, BamHI and HaeIII to observe the different patterns, which specific to each monitor. The results from both genes analysis showed the different patterns among species, but the variations between subspecies were observed in cytochrome b gene only. -

Name: __________________________________ Monster of the Desert by Guy Belleranti Imagine a monster with a big head, a powerful bite, strong digging claws, and a forked tongue. The monster is black with yellow or pink scales all over it's body. If you've been to the deserts of southwestern U.S. and northwestern Mexico, you may have seen such an animal, known as the Gila (HEE-la) monster. Growing up to two feet long, it is the largest of all lizards native to the United States. The Gila monster is one of only two venomous lizards living in North America. The other is the similar looking Mexican beaded lizard. Named after Arizona’s Gila River, the colorful Gila monster makes its home in hot, dry, rocky desert landscapes. Despite its scary name the Gila monster is actually a shy animal. It doesn’t bravely leap out at people, spitting venom. Instead, the solitary Gila monster spends most of its time in underground burrows or hiding under rocks. A Gila monster can go for months without eating. How can it do this? Well, it lives on the fat it has stored in its tail and abdomen. The most likely time to see this animal is in the spring when it comes out to hunt for food. While it is nocturnal (coming out at night) for most of the year, the Gila monster does occasionally venture out in the sunshine during the spring months to sun itself on desert rocks. The Gila monster doesn’t consider people food. We’re way too big. -

This amendment would revise the scientific name of the rosy boa, which is classified as a protected reptile, from Lichanura trivirgata to Lichanura orcutti. This name change is needed due to new scientific studies that have split the species into two distinct entities, one that occurs in Nevada and one that occurs outside the state. Current NAC protects the species outside Nevada rather than the species that occurs within Nevada. The Commission held a workshop on Aug. 10, 2018, and the Commission directed the Department to move forward with an adoption hearing. Summary: A genetics study in 2008 by Woods et al. split the rosy boa into two distinct species – the three- lined boa (Lichanura trivirgata) and the rosy boa (Lichanura orcutti). This split was formally recognized in 2017 by the Committee on Standard English and Scientific Names by the Society of the Study of Amphibians and Reptiles. Three-lined boas, Lichanura trivirgata, occur in Baja California, Southern Arizona and Sonora Mexico, while the rosy boa, Lichanura orcutti occur in Nevada, parts of California and northern Arizona. -
