AGLEHAWK EF LORALBOUTIQUE

10 Janette Dyall was diagnosed with Stage 3 HER2 positive breast cancer in 2014. She has undergone a mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Unfortunately, despite numerous and varied treatments, her cancer spread and is now Stage 4. Whilst Janette continues to undergo treatment she has been fortunate to have the support of McGrath Foundation Breast Care Nurse Rosie by her side from her initial appointment with the surgeon and oncologist through to today. Janette’s husband, children, family and friends mean the world to her and it was her brother Paul Dalton who approached Janette in October 2016 about the idea of organising a fundraising event to place more McGrath Breast Care Nurses in rural and regional and to help promote early awareness and education in young women. This fundraising event became known as Ride24.

Janette had been approached by many people asking how they could help and what they could do. Over the past six months and from 10am on Friday 3rd March until 10am on Saturday 4th March 2017 at the Tom Flood Sports Centre, those offers of support from family, friends, local, regional and businesses and from so many individuals Australia wide was demonstrated through unwavering support of Ride24. Paul rode for 24 hours to achieve this immense task. The initial fundraising target of $10,000 was surpassed in December. A new target of $15,000 was set. The tally currently sits in excess of $37,000 for the McGrath Foundation with donations still flowing in. A separate raffle was run in conjunction with Ride24 to raise funds for the Bendigo Health Foundation and Oncology Unit. The raffle sold out with $5000 being donated to the Oncology Unit at Bendigo Health.

There are no words to express Paul and Janette’s gratitude and thanks to the many people that made Ride24 such a huge success. To view photos and live stream videos from Ride24, visit Paul’s Facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/paul.dalton.5876. There is still two weeks remaining to donate before it closes, so any help would be amazing!

McGrath Foundation Ambassador and Director, Tracy Bevan, says the McGrath Foundation continues to be blown away by the support from Australian communities, which directly helps the Foundation in its mission to ensure every family in Australia experiencing breast cancer has access to a breast care nurse no matter where they live – and always free.

“We are proud to have funded 117 McGrath Breast Care Nurses working nationally who, together, have supported more than 50,000 families going through breast cancer. Events like this are truly helping us to make a difference; we couldn’t do it without you,” Tracy said.

THE LIONS CLUBS OF BENDIGO

The city of Greater Bendigo is served by eight Lions Clubs the oldest being the Lions Club of Bendigo formed in 1956. Other clubs within the city are at Eaglehawk, Elmore, Heathcote, Huntly-Epsom, Kangaroo Flat, Maiden Gully Marong and Strathfieldsaye. In addition, there is a Lioness Club – for lady members only – and a Leo Club at Girton Grammar School for younger persons. These clubs are all chartered under the banner of the International Association of Lions Clubs; the worldwide organization has more than 1.3 million members. Within Australia there are some 1300 clubs with a total membership in excess of 27,000. Lions Clubs, Lioness Clubs and Leo Clubs worldwide have as there principal objective service to the community – both at the local level and also at the national and international level. Throughout Bendigo are numerous examples of aid and assistance given to community organizations and individuals by the clubs. The Lions Club of Bendigo has been associated with The Madison Carnival since it’s inception in 1972 and have spent countless hours, especially over this weekend to make this unique carnival a success and a feature event for Bendigo. This year we appreciate the assistance of several other Lions Clubs, together with the Lioness Club in conducting the 2014 Bendigo International Madison. If you are interested in other Lions Clubs projects or seeking information about membership of a club near you, we encourage you to talk to one of the Lions members helping here today or phone Jill Qualtrough on 5441 4823. We trust that you enjoy the athletics, cycling and the excitement of the 2016 Bendigo International Madison Carnival. [email protected]

BILL McLACHLAN MEMORIAL A former cyclist, Bill was always ready to assist and advise younger riders. He was a member of the Easter Fair Committee for 30 years and a trainer with the Sandhurst and Provincial Football Clubs. Bill was well qualified at First Aid, and a member of the award winning S.E.C First Aid team. A member of the Bendigo Amateur Cycling Club for many years, Bill was club president in 1972. He transported younger riders all over the state to compete in track and road racing events. MANY CYCLISTS have tried, but few have achieved a hat-trick of victories in the illustrious history of the Bendigo International Madison. Winning team-mates of the past two years, Dan Fitter and Callum Scotson will aim to join an elite club in the 2017 version of the great race, backed by McCaig Airconditioning and Daikin. This time Fitter and Scotson are opponents, not team-mates. Scotson will join forces with Cameron Meyer, a six-time world champion on the track and winner of the BIM in 2011. Fitter and fellow Queenslander Kaden Groves will pit their skills against 30 rivals in a 200-lap contest decided by laps taken and sprint points on one of the most unique tracks in the world. The Madison’s “Three-In-Row” club members are Keith Oliver, Bob Whetters and Stephen Pate. There are six previous winners of Bendigo’s great race aiming to etch another victory alongside their name in this year’s showdown. Meyer and Scotson carry favourite status, but there have been some stunning upsets in Bendigo this decade. An incredible record for Meyer includes three world titles in the points race, two in madison, and one in team pursuit. Scotson earned silver in team pursuit at the Rio Olympics, and struck gold in the same discipline at the world titles in London. Just three years ago, Dutch ace Roy Pieters and Bendigo’s Sam Crome stunned all rivals and the huge crowd when their breakaway late in the race reaped the ultimate reward. The Who dares wins motto played out in a dramatic finish. Pieters is back in Bendigo and will team with South Australia’s Josh Harrison. Young guns Sam Welsford and Kelland O’Brien are two of Australia’s brightest prospects in track cycling. Welsford won gold at last month’s World Cup in Colombia. The Western Australian was a silver medallist in the team pursuit at the Rio Olympics. O’Brien won the madison at last year’s junior worlds and is rated a top prospect for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. Japan’s Minori Shimmura and Eiya Hashimoto will chase an historic win. Shimmura won the 2014 Austral Wheelrace in Melbourne and is gearing up for a second tilt at BIM glory. Germany’s Christian Grassman and Dutch cyclist Nick Stopler join forces again. The all-German team of Grassman and Leif Lampater ruled Bendigo’s track four years ago. There will be plenty of support for Brendan Schultz and Isaac Buckell on their home track. In a race packed with so many talented teams, there is sure to be plenty of drama to keep the thousands of fans enthralled.

11 PREVIEW FOR BENDIGO WOMEN’S MADISON By Nathan Dole

THE team of Amy Cure and Alex Manly looks the one to beat in this year’s Innes Motors Subaru women’s madison. This year marks the fifth anniversary of the women’s madison on the Bendigo International Madison carnival. A dual world track champion, Cure won silver in the scratch and bronze in the individual pursuit at the 2014 in Glasgow. Cure raced at the Rio Olympics and warmed up for the recently-run national track titles by winning the team pursuit and points race at the World Cup in Colombia, and the madison in Los Angeles. The star from Devonport will team with with one of Australia’s best prospects in road and track racing. Highs for Manly in 2017 include gold in the under-23 road race and time trial at the Australian road championships raced on the Mount Buninyong circuit in . Manly’s ability to surge clear or chase opponents will be a huge plus in the 60-lap duel on the Tom Flood Sports Centre track in Bendigo. There will be plenty of support for Bendigo’s Tayla Evans. A year ago, Evans teamed with Lauretta Hanson to be runner-up in the Bendigo classic. There is a strong Tasmanian influence in this year’s race. Devonport’s Macey Stewart is an Australian champion in team pursuit and been runner-up in a madison. Stewart teams up with Maeve Moroney-Plouffe from South Australia. Ararat’s Alice Culling is a fierce competitor in points score and pursuit. Skills in those events are ideal in a madison. South Australia’s Chloe Moran starred at last year’s Oceania road championships. The teenager won gold in the road race and was runner-up in the time trial. Moran has excelled in criterium racing at national level and joins forces with Dani McKinnirey in Bendigo. A dual world champion at junior level, McKinnirey has won the national madison crown on two occasions. The rising star from Norwood could add Bendigo to the list.

47 BENDIGO BANK “Golden Mile” WHEELRACE

One of the most famous track cycling races in Australia is the Golden Mile Wheelrace. Originally the event was raced at the Easter Fair Carnival, before very big crowds, drawn by the Easter Fair Procession, which finished at the gates of the Sports Centre. The final was originally on Easter Wednesday, then Easter Tuesday, before being moved to Easter Monday, then eventually Easter Sunday night. Rarely has weather been a problem for the final, but during my time with Easter Fair Sports, the race was abandoned in 1979 and 1983 because of rain. The famous names - , contested the event. Patterson’s son Rik won the Amateur Golden Mile in 1984. Bendigo’s Frank McCaig won three times in the 60’s with his son Brent the winner in 1995. Other well known winners include Barry Waddell (1962) and Danny Clark (1975). Stephen Pate won the race five times - 1988, 1991, 1994, 1996 and 1997. Bendigo Bank is providing good sponsorship for this years “Golden Mile”. Allowing for track handicap marks, the event will be raced as close to the Mile as possible. It will be back to a true handicap, with exciting heats and a Bendigo Bank packed Final. Barry McNaught
