Enjoy! The Nisenfeld Family Dear Friends, They come from far and wide - from fictional places such as Forest Hills; Gotham City; Themyscira; Midway City; or Metropolis. They come each with a set of super skills combining unparalleled strength with other unique abilities - leaping over tall buildings with a single bound, gliding, shooting webs to swing from tower to tower, breathing underwater or possessing night or x-ray vision. They come to life in comic books, movies and television, and we cheer for them and their determination to do good deeds. Sometimes, we even dress in costume to briefly be them! They are the Superheroes! We recognize and enjoy these pop-culture Superheroes but the Powers Within that they possess pale in comparison to those of the heroes who surround us in life. We need only look to the Banner community to find our own heroes. From our founder Elinor Miller who saw her vision for The Banner School become a reality through her determination and hard work; to the founding families whose faith in the program led them to enroll their children in the early years; to each teacher who has taught within Banner’s classrooms; to the parents, family members and friends who have volunteered their time, their energy, their skills, or their resources in support of the school – they are Banner’s heroes. Commissioner Gordon once said to Batman - “You are going to make a difference. A lot of times, it won’t be huge, it won’t be visible even. But it will matter just the same.” Such can be said to Banner’s heroes- past, present and future. Your efforts and generosity are a powerful force that sustains and enriches the School. You are our heroes. During the past few weeks, students have discussed in classes what makes a hero and what superpower they each possess or wish to possess. The answers that they wrote for their art project have been a delight to read for they ranged from “I can tame a unicorn,” to “invisibility” to “being happy all the time.” We know that every child has a power - a light within, and the nurturing and challenging environment at Banner helps each student discover that light - that passion for himself or herself. Their academic accomplishments; the values of compassion, integrity, responsibility, civility, leadership, empathy and service that they display each day; and the confidence that they show in the classroom, on the stage and on the court, makes Banner’s students our heroes. Thank you to all of the heroes who join us tonight and who grace Banner’s campus each day. You are supporting a super school, a super student body, a super faculty and staff and we are super grateful for your generosity. My thanks to all, Gail A.
