Highlights from 'Hamilton' Lyrics Highlights From ‘Hamilton’ - Lin-Manuel Miranda How does a bastard, orphan, son of a whore and a Scotsman, dropped in the middle of a forgotten Spot in the Caribbean by providence, impoverished, in squalor Grow up to be a hero and a scholar? Alexander Hamilton (Alexander Hamilton) Alexander Hamilton I am not throwing away my shot I am not throwing away my shot Hey yo, I'm just like my country I'm young, scrappy and hungry And I'm not throwing away my shot I am not throwing away my shot I am not throwing away my shot Hey yo, I'm just like my country I'm young, scrappy and hungry And I'm not throwing away my shot Whoa, whoa, whoa-oh-oh Whoa-oh-oh, whoa-oh-oh, yeah Whoa, whoa, whoa-oh-oh Whoa-oh-oh, whoa-oh-oh, History has its eyes on you (Whoa, whoa, whoa whoa-oh-oh, whoa-oh-oh, whoa-oh-oh) History has its eyes on you You'll be back, soon you'll see You'll remember you belong to me You'll be back, time will tell You'll remember that I served you well Oceans rise, empires fall We have seen each other through it all And when push comes to shove I will send a fully armed battalion to remind you of my love! Work, work! (Angelica!) Work, work! (Eliza!) (and Peggy!) Work, work! The Schuyler sisters Look around, look around Look around, look around at how lucky we are to be alive right now Look around, look around at how lucky we are to be alive right now History is happening in Manhattan and we just happen to be In the greatest city in the world! • Writing an “I Want” Song
Let’s Get Lyrical: Writing an “I Want” Song What is the “I Want” song? The “I Want” song usually occurs toward the beginning of the musical (some examples include “Part of this World” from The Little Mermaid, "I Just Can't Wait to Be King" The Lion King, and “My Shot” from Hamilton) when the lead character expresses their dreams, desires, or dissatisfactions. It gives the audience an inside look at the lead character’s motivations for the actions that then drive them through the play. It also often catapults their journey. 1. Pick your favorite book (preferably one that hasn’t been turned into a musical – or if it has, one that you think didn’t do a good job with the musical). 2. Choose a moment in the book that you want to turn into a song. You have two options: ○ Pick any moment in the book that speaks to you - feel free to get creative! ○ Consider writing the lead character’s “I Want” song. 3. Before starting to write, do a little brainstorming: ○ Why did I choose this book to turn into a musical? ○ Why did I choose this moment to turn into a song? ○ What do I think is the “emotional core” of this moment? (For example, what this character wants and why they want it). 4. Use these questions to guide your thinking for an “I Want” song: ○ What does this character want most of all? ○ What is the character’s desire or dissatisfaction in this moment? ○ At the end of the song, what realization or decision will they have made that will catapult them into their journey? 5.

For more information, please contact [email protected], [email protected]. “Not Throwing Away My Shot” Bastards in Shakespeare and Hamilton Ryan Meservey When perusing the online Shakespeare Insults Dictionary, you will fnd the word “bastard” in colorful variety. Entries like “bastard warriors!” to “bastardly rogue!” to “bastards and else!” suggest a common use: the word “bastard” in Shakespeare’s time alludes not only to social status but also to a general persona (Novy 124). This use in regards to personality has certainly persisted into the present, popping up angrily in movies and on the Internet. Urban Dictionary, the Internet’s de-facto pop culture dictionary, defnes the term as “someone who disregards other people in pursuit of their own self-interest,” and someone who is “narcissistic and unknowingly frustrating” (Entry 3, Entry 5). These defnitions attest to the typical American experience with this word. Today, “bastard” is primarily used to describe self-centered people and less often used to describe children born out of wedlock.
