In the current economic climate, law firms are increasingly seeking out ways to streamline their operations and drive down costs. Outsourcing is emerging as a way to achieve such aims in the face of a rapidly changing legal landscape. And as the race to deliver efficiencies to clients without sacrificing effectiveness becomes more competitive, choosing appropriate outsourcing arrangements is key. In the global legal industry, two outsourcing operating models are becoming progressively evident: business process outsourcing (BPO), which entails using third parties to deliver non- billable tasks, including routine and repetitive work; and legal process outsourcing (LPO), where a law firm uses third parties to deliver billable client work.

In a corresponding 40-man roster move, the A’s have also designated Triple-A outfielder Nick Buss for assignment. Samardzija (pronounced suh-MAHR-jah), 29, currently ranks 10th in ERA among National League starting pitchers with a 2.83 figure and 2-7 record in 17 games, all starts, for the Cubs. The 6-5, 225-pound right-hander has struck out 103 batters, walked only 31 and allowed 99 hits in 108.0 innings. He has posted a 1.20 WHIP and yielded a .245 opponents’ batting average this season. The Merrillville, Ind. native has averaged 8.84 strikeouts per nine innings since the start of the 2011 season, the seventh- best mark in the National League during that period. Samardzija was also one of four NL pitchers last year to reach 213.2 innings and 214 strikeouts, joining the Dodgers’ Clayton Kershaw, the Phillies’ Cliff Lee and the Cardinals’ Adam Wainwright. He was chosen by the Cubs in the fifth round of the 2006 Draft out of Notre Dame, where he was first team All-Big East in baseball and a first team All-America tight end in football.

Cole Gillespie No Longer a Mariner Former AppleSox, Cole Gillespie was designated for assignment yesterday by the Mariners. Gillespie played for Wenatchee in 2004. From the Seattle Times: “The Mariners made a somewhat expected roster move today, activating Corey Hart from the disabled list. To make room for Hart, outfielder Cole Gillespie was designated for assignment. “Hart played left field for the Rainiers the other night – a sign that his legs were starting to become strong enough to make a return. In 10 rehab games with Tacoma, Hart was hitting .297 (11-for-37) with three doubles, a triple, a homer and four RBI. Hart has been on the DL since May 18 after suffering a hamstring strain against the Minnesota Twins on a stolen base attempt. “Gillespie appeared in 34 games, hitting .254 (18-for-71) with two doubles, a homer and five RBI. His playing time had dwindled in the last week. He’d played just twice since July 25. Gillespie was signed in the offseason as a minor league free agent.
